Time to go visit ol' Mr. Hubble The Space Telescope!

This movie has nothing to do with 125, but it is nonetheless interesting as we see rendezvous ops with Scott Altman and his crew from 109.

Did I just see something fly past the orbiter on NTV?!
A few seconds after the video started something (apparently) flew right to left very rapidly (few frames only)

image artifact?

Might have been reported already, but the crew was recently told that the HST high gain antennas have been retracted for capture.

Scott Altman got concurrence to start Group B power up a little early when they get closer to that in the timeline.

Hefty NH burn coming up after that: delta-V of 308 fps!  Burn time is 198 seconds; magnitudes are up there with some de-orbit burns.

(Prelim PAD for that is in the Execute Package.)

Atlantis has been asked to deselect IMU 3 with an item 9, don't know what that means, but then given go ahead to proceed with orbit ops.

I wouldn't mind a close up view of that right hand screen instead of the usual three axis view.

Atlantis now has a good IMU align and crew given go ahead to reselect IMU 3.

Yep, that's very interesting!

FD3 article about one hour away, rounding up a ton of info, but avoiding getting wordy as there's no real issues being worked and MER are still only on three "Funnies" (which is very low/good!)

They show it occasionally during rendezvous ops, and all the missions now have a rendezvous in them.

GNC SPEC 21 IMU Alignment, have marked item 9 with crudely drawn red box. Notice how it's under the "3" column for IMU 3. Des means Deselect.

Chris,

I think the HST grapple date and time in the top post are incorrect, it should read
"May 13 (Wed), 133/16:55 GMT (12:55 EDT)."

I know you are very busy, but if you got a minute ...  People might look there first.

Thanks for your work, BTW!

And thanks for the correction to the opening post. What I've done there is copy the text info from the SSP FRR overview presentation (which was when STS-125 was a May 12 launch). Corrected it.

The screenshot is from a MMT overview presentation last night, so that's correct at least :)

The solid yellow curve is the history of the orbiter's position relative to Hubble, computed using the onboard state vectors.

The dotted yellow curve is the prediction of same, at five minute intervals.

Yep, he's slipped that one in a few times during the morning.  Been saying it so for so many missions I guess.

Meanwhile closure rate has dropped to about zero as Atlantis reaches Apogee.

On the screen shot that you posted, what does the yellow represent and the dashed line represent.  No sound so I can't hear the PAO.  Thanks

The yellow is actual track, the dotted line is required track.

Not required, predicted. The dotted line assumes coasting flight, no future burns.

I thought we got a third plot where there was a deviation between predicted and required.  Could easily be wrong though.

You can see in the top left corner the graphic above the path Atlantis would take without burns - the dotted yellow line.  At the apogee of that orbit, there will be another burn to continue on the yellow path.  I believe the burn at apogee (the top of the little loop) is the TI burn

Very cool to see orbital mechanics in action

There are multiple displays that get put on the TV. The one you're referring to (RPOP) doesn't have the required trajectory, but one of the others (the FDO display with the orbiter attitude window on it) does have required trajectory. My bad.

They are discussing problems with a box called the Bit Sync Assembly (BSA) which recovers data waveforms transmitted by RF from the Hubble telescope before passing the data stream on to the Orbiter systems.

They are having problems establishing a "lock" with the Hubble at present (they thought it might have been a range issue before when they tried).

Picture of the box attached.

Have they turned off the Ku antenne? And why?

This is often asked so I'll explain and is often a point of confusion.

The Ku antenna is also the rendezvous radar. It can't provide comms and work as the rendezvous radar at the same time. Currently it's tracking HST providing range, angles and rate information.

Take the yellow range/rdot with a grain of salt. The onboard nav state is walking off from the radar. They're really about 250 ft right now. Crew is flying with raw radar and HHL.

Sounds like they are little behind on the HST commanding, so they are going to drop the commanding to roll the telescope (42 degrees) and Scott Altman will change the orbiter yaw to account for that...the commanding would have required approx. 16 minutes...
Correction: the maneuver would have required 16 minutes (commanding probably not so long).

A trajectory mess:

The actual trajectory is probably fairly smooth, but the onboard state is diverging periodically (the crew is periodically fixing that by reinitializing the covariance matrix). Raw radar data looks a little noisy as well. HHL marks aren't downlisted so that's why MCC is asking for the crew to voice them marks every now and then.

After the arm reaches the published position, they're going to do an orbiter maneuver to different attitude.  Thought I heard CapCom say it would be about a 30 minute maneuver.

Edit -- reading up the maneuver data to load, but are going to try one more thing to get lock first before executing.

I heard around a 30 minute manuver too. Presumably these DAPs provide very low rates to protect HST.

Manuver prelim:
R 175
P 090
Y 000

DAPs for manuver are: A15 and B12.

IMU 3 to be deselected.

Question: Since Hubble is berthed on it's bottom, and the SCM will attach to the bottom, will they have to un-berth to do the attachment?

No, they only have to drive a single bolt during EVA 1 to secure it to Hubble's underside. It will be attached in the current berthing mechanism, IIRC. There's some info about it in the EVA preview conference http://www.space-multimedia.nl.eu.org/index.php?option=com_content&view=article&id=4893:sts-125-program-mission-and-spacewalk-briefing&catid=1 (http://www.space-multimedia.nl.eu.org/index.php?option=com_content&view=article&id=4893:sts-125-program-mission-and-spacewalk-briefing&catid=1) or in the Press Kit (page 40-41)

I know I always say this, but thanks a million to everyone that's keeping such a wonderful (and epic, I should add) coverage here. Much appreciated for those of us that can only get to a computer for a pair of hours at most during hectic May!

Apparently it's the camera that was used in Columbia to see images from the payload bay towards the crew cabin during STS-1, and now it's being used as a centerline berthing camera (in fact, it's already been used) for the FSS.

The camera under the FSS being used for B&W coverage was used for in-cabin color photos during STS-1.

Edit: eergo beat me to it.  Thought they said this morning it was in-cabin, but he's probably right.

A: Has been in the past, do not have that quantified, astronauts will have a good look tomorrow.  Cannot quantify right now but expect some from previous experience.

Bornstein:  Debris on cover, so should not affect instruments.

A:  No idea what it is, worried that it could get on mirror, but contamination guys are ok with it.

Bornstein:  Focused inspection?

A: No inspection on chine, enough data that no more was needed.  Still have the rest of the vehicle, will yeah or nay at 5 pm est.

LeRoy saying how nominal and uneventful the grappling and berthing sequence was.

Some funnies: R5R thruster degraded chamber pressure. Keeping watch in it, although there are workarounds for stationkeeping if it should completely fail.

WLE impact in 11R panel (.47 Gs -corrected-) Probably real impact, also shown in adjacent panels. But not concerned about damage, certainly not critical. At most, coating damage.

All TPS cleared for tiles and blankets (that leaves the RCC) No FI needed for TPS. RCC was more than 90% complete when MMT finished, so probably won't need any further inspection there either. Decision in 2 hours. Tomorrow, DAT will formally clear RCC in the MMT.

Vehicle very clean, pleased with performance.

Ascent performance really good. More info on that when the post-flight assessments are out.

Hubble team looking at the debris particles/contamination in the payload bay. They have plans to deal with those. Advising the crew to keep out of their way, and avoid them getting close to instruments. Just a slight nuisance.

The WLE IDS is 0.47, not 4.7.

They don't usually even look at anything less than 1.0 Grms, so surprising they would mention it. Over 10.0 Grms is where it becomes a worry, depending on mass, size, which panel etc.

Impact load to cause damage to RCC: function of panel, and location within the panel, as well as size, angle... many variables. But a handful of Gs, so nothing like the .5 Gs recorded (thanks for the correction Phillip... do they measure in grams or in Gs?)

Contamination, they think, is something getting from underneath the blankets. Definitely, absolutely, undeniably weren't there before launch.

Contaminants are aft of the airlock, on the first truss with Hubble hardware (on the SLIC, therefore - nice picture by Chris just above :) )

Chine damage: it went through normal assessment by DAT. Relatively small dings and scratches, superficial. Inner area of the tile is pretty thick, so no worries there. Not really even close to being critical.

Looked at how the increased heating in one would affect the increased heating in the one behind it, but fundamentally, it was relatively small damage, no action required.

Contamination looks like coarse-grain salt sprinkled over the handrail, without high density areas. On MLI, about a dozen particles, smaller than the tip of the small finger.

White in color. Will release the pictures. No particles on the thermal cover (on the airlock, right?) Just telling the crew to be careful with how they grab the handrail, because they can avoid it, as well as when opening the latches on the SLIC without disturbing the contaminated MLI.

Impacts of the pad debris/lightning strikes. 39B and Endeavour are ok, lightning didn't cause damage (as far as they have checked) 39A can be repaired within the last week or so.

For possible debris avoidance maneuver, nothing agressive like OMS assists can be done, less so when Hubble is docked. Only slight RCS corrections.

Crew has just been notified no FI is needed.

Crew also notified that about 16 tiles on the port side were missed in the inspection, and MCC will devise a plan to check it out with RMS post-EVA tomorrow.

Depends on where the 16 tiles in question are. The RMS is on the port side so it's an easier reach.

The Orbit 2 PAO Pat Ryan said they are below the left-firing thrusters on the FRCS.  Not sure if that's below the FRCS module itself, but that's the general area.

Apologies.  Let me rephrase my question.

Is a visual-only inspection via the SRMS video camera likely to be considered sufficient for these 16 missed tiles, or do they need the LDRI to make this determination?  Since the RPM is obviously considered useful, I'm guessing a visual-only inspection is sufficient unless damage is found, is that correct?

Right, the SRMS wrist camera can do the equivalent of an RPM visual-only inspection, then they can haul out the OBSS if needed. The camera is much lower resolution than the 400 and 800 mm lenses used for the RPM but it will also be much closer.

This is probably heading more to the Shuttle Q&A topic, but I thought the OBSS sent down one 3D image out of the 4 that it takes, which is why the camera flickers?  Or am I completely messing that up?

I know this is is a little ahead of the timeline, but since there's not much going on right now, I was reading the flight plan and noticed a ship-to-ship call from Atlantis to ISS on FD10.  That started me thinking, can the ISS crew see the HST and/or Atlantis and vice versa?  I know they are at different altitudes and orbit inclinations, but at some point the orbits cross each other. (See picture.) I did some reading about orbital mechanics but didn't really see this in there.

Just a general comment about the STS-400 "Emergency Shuttle". The news media sure has a short memory. The Emergency Shuttle was a Constraint for whatever mission was next. Ever since our third RTF; I refer to three since #2 involved MPS and did ground the entire Shuttle Fleet. I was Columbia's MPS Lead Engineer at the time so it was a short RTF situation in that regard but it was a "Shutdown" of all Missions as directed from NASA Level 1. OK so we have Return to Flights - 1st, Post Challenger 1986-1988, 2nd, MPS Hydrogen Leaks of Columbia, summer 1991, and 3rd, Columbia reentry disaster Feb 2003. Following the last Disaster and stoppage of all Flts, most of the attention was directed into how to inspect and fix the ET section that broke off during early Ascent impacting the left wing's RCC. Extremely high on the Orbiter's "Crit 1 list" was the impact detection system sensors on the inside of the RCC and the techniques, new glues/thermal materials and the Design and Implementation of the  Extension and Inspection Laser Boom needed for on Orbit TPS location and possible repair.  There was always the worst case scenario whereby a certain type of damage may not be repairable on Orbit. That meant going to ISS until a rescue shuttle or some "other system" could bring back the temporarily ISS stranded Shuttle crew. I seem to remember that NASA always had a "Rescue Shuttle" on "stand-by" ready to go (or very, very close) for every Post Columbia Mission, am I wrong?  I know some of you all remember? I'm 95% sure, off the top of my lil head and without making a simple call to KSC, that we have always had a Shuttle on "Stand-by" called STS-400 or maybe an earlier term other than STS-400.  Also let's remember, Hubble has been in its current "debris prone" orbit for all these years (since 1990) and has not sustained any hits worthy of mention and it has very little orbital transfer ability other than position/pointing. Hubble is the size of the Shuttle's Payload Bay and the Solar Panels are begging to be hit, they have not. Eventually, yes, but hopefully not till after Hubble's final Photon is captured!

The difference is that this is the only time the "emergency" shuttle was at the pad, so it gives the news media something they need -- a visual.

Thanks for that clarification.
Ever since post Columbia there was a new ground rule for a "Rescue Shuttle" or maybe they called it the "Backup Shuttle". It was "ready to go" within an allowable emergency "Time to Launch" window. That seems like what I remember.  Your comment is so true about the Rescue Shuttle at the Pad!  Such a big Press topic and photo Op overtaken only by the Swine Flu, CIA Memos or the New York City 747 Flyover!   :)

Thanks
