Big variety of wake up songs for STS-126, so what would you ask for, or get your family to choose for you on your flight day wake up song?
Mine:
All around the world - Oasis.
http://uk.youtube.com/watch?v=MywWolXGIx8&feature=channel
-
"Don't Bring Me Down" by ELO ;D
-
One of my fav bands, Manic Street Preachers: Faster.
"I am, stronger than MENSA"
John Ira Petty might disapprove ;)
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7Z75uaReMIQ
-
"Time Stand Still" by Rush.
I think, being in orbit, one would WANT to "freeze this moment a little bit longer"...
http://www.youtube.com/v/eRSHk3NzUro&hl=en&fs=1
-
"Good morning, Good morning" by the Beatles.
-
"Wake Up" by Rage Against the Machine
(if only to watch PAO heads spinning)

Magic Carpet Ride, Steppenwolf, would work just fine. ;)

I'm totally non-original: Faith of the Heart, the Russell Watson version.

-
I'd have "Ain't no Mountain High Enough" by Marvin Gaye.
-
Here are a few of my ideas:
-A bosun pipe piping and the word "reveille, reveille, all hands heave out!"
-James Bond theme.
-Christopher Franke's Babylon 5 theme (fourth season).
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qGQ5DSzxsZU
-
'Hoppípolla' by Sigur Rós, or 'Beautiful Day' by U2
It'd be hard one to decide between these two, as Hoppipolla is a 'big' song, which seems suited to a situation involving the whole planet, whereas U2's tune describes orbit completely...
-
This amazing cover of The Final Countdown! :)
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FjeMDvCdrtc
-
I would choose "Hey Sandy" by Polaris. It was the theme song to the 90s American TV show "The Adventures of Pete and Pete." It would make a good wakeup song for Sandra Magnus as well.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IJrCkB9zzEo
-
Walking On Sunshine - Katrina & The Waves
-
"ONE" by U2
-
Oldie but goodies: wish I had a fuller version of the 'TB5' theme... :)
-
For STS-126:
"Hang on to Yourself" from the David Bowie album
"The rise and fall of Ziggy Stardust and the Spiders from Mars"
:D
(It contains the line "..you're the blessed, we're the Spiders from Mars")
Elmo and Spiderman deserve a dedication now they're official crew members.
-
Radio Nowhere - Bruce Springsteen
Learning to fly - Pink Floyd
The crying machine - Steve Vai
-
Hmmm....good question:
Spirit in the Sky - Norman Greenbaum
Castles in the Sky - Ian Van Dahl
Can't think of any others that fit the "really high up/epic" genre.
-
Here is my picks...
"Good Morning Starshine" from Hair
Good morning starshine
The earth says hello
You twinkle above us
We twinkle below...
And then there is my favorite wake up song here on earth...
"More Than a Feeling" by Boston
-
Guns n' roses - sweet child o' mine
Van Halen - Dreams
or Bon Jovi - Livin' on a prayer
-
Learn to Fly - Foo Fighters. Always used on orbit.
http://youtube.com/watch?v=BieVgyrfglQ
-
Learn to Fly - Foo Fighters. Always used on orbit.
I'd say that's the best one they've had as an actual wake up call. Great tune and has relevance.
Snow Patrol's Run is a tune too. Jury still out on the Leona Lewis cover.
Wait for MaxQ's STS-126 video, which uses the most relevant song ever :)
-
Not sure if I'd be the first tuba player in orbit ... in any case, my choice would be "Fnugg Blue" by Øystein Baadsvik:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mHMyrhilkdo
-
Muse - Sing For Absolution, especially the heavy bit three minutes in.
http://www.youtube.com/v/tDVqndXhPHk (http://www.youtube.com/v/tDVqndXhPHk)
The video is appropriate, too. The designer has obviously seen a Soyuz fly (watch for the booster sep!)

Has gained a post on a few music related threads, and it deserves it! Very good British band who've had good US interest but hasn't broken the dominance that god-awful "rap" music has in the States.
Video was produced by ARK studio in Sheffield, Yorkshire.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sing_for_Absolution
While we're on Muse and wake up songs:
Knights Of Cydonia- live in front of 100,000 to open the billion dollar rebuild of Wembley 'soccer' Stadium:
http://uk.youtube.com/watch?v=j8WP7aOD_9Q
There's other spacey songs, such as Super Massive Black Hole, and Plug In Baby.
-
Axl and Slash showing the youngsters how Rock should be done ;)
Guns N Roses - Knocking On Heavens Door Live
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gfa2fsrruS8
-
I think I'd want either Holst's "Mars" movement from The Planets or the "In Orbit" theme from SpaceCamp (which I have as my default background track for Orbiter :P):

haha wow that video is bad ass ;D
-
"ONE" by U2
yeah, a classic
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JFWPeVfWB9o
and I like the version they did with Mary J Blige too
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=be0j4PbrQOI
-
Nothing. I am capable of getting myself up and certainly wouldn't attach any great significance, much less a comment on TV or to the media what the song, if any, I woke up to.
-
Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart .. Symphony No. 25 in G minor, K. 183/173dB, Movement one, Allegro con brio
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7lC1lRz5Z_s (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7lC1lRz5Z_s)
That would get me going but probably would put the rest of the crew and mission control back to sleep.
--- CHAS
-
"Eye of the tiger"
I figured its a good way to get pumped up for a great day in space.
-
The Star wars theme
:D, I know I am Original.
-
"Elevation" by U2
Or depending if SAS has set in, "Vertigo" by U2.
-

Damn! I know the English have been the leaders of popular music since the 60s, but that is super impressive. Great track and from 4:15 in, it just goes up a level. Must have been amazing to be at that event.
-
"What a wonderful world" Armstrong
Shine on you crazy diamond, Pink Floyd
Moby - we are all made of stars
Daft Punk - Digital Love
Air - Kelly watch the stars
-
Someone said Magic Carpet Ride already.
-
Blinded by the light... Manfred Mann
Dies Irae from Symphonie Fantastique (think The Shining)
-
van halen dreams
http://uk.youtube.com/watch?v=GjPEBunlstQ
-
It's got to be "Spaceman" by Babylon Zoo!
You may remember that they used the speeded up part of the song for a Levi jeans advert years ago.
-
Dull wake up songs for STS-119 so far.
-
Still waiting for a shuttle crew to get Rick Rolled.
-
I would give them three choices:
"No surrender", Bruce Springsteen
"The cradle will rock", Van Halen (because of the "get up!" part, plus I like the song)
My wife woul pick "With or without you" by U2
-
From Archibald
"What a wonderful world" Armstrong
NEIL HAS AN ALBUM???!!!!
I didn't know that!!!! ;D
-
Van Hallen - Jump
During a trip to the Moon, the day Orion cross the... Van Allen belts (runs for cover)
-
Here is my picks...
"Good Morning Starshine" from Hair
Good morning starshine
The earth says hello
You twinkle above us
We twinkle below...

"More Than a Feeling" by Boston
I would pick Good Morning, Starshine by Oliver 1969........
-
What's the legal position on all these wake-up calls? Does NASA have to pay royalties or fees for broadcasting music over its airwaves?
-
I´d pick Down Under by Men At Work
-
What's the legal position on all these wake-up calls? Does NASA have to pay royalties or fees for broadcasting music over its airwaves?
I don't think so, but I could be wrong.
I would pick either Space man by Biff Naked, Unbelievable by EMF (cause orbiting the earth would be/is unbelievable ;D) Paradise City by Guns 'N' Roses or Amazed by Lonestar.
-
I've changed my mind - 'Six Months In A Leaky Boat' by Split Enz. :)
Skip ahead to 1:30 in to it!

What's the legal position on all these wake-up calls? Does NASA have to pay royalties or fees for broadcasting music over its airwaves?
Most likely yes, especially since some of the wake up calls are cablecast and webcast on NASA TV. The companies who handle this: ASCAP (http://www.ascap.com), SESAC (http://www.sesac.com) and BMI (http://www.bmi.com) are vicious about public performance fees. Radio and TV stations (including satellite and cable), bars, department stores; anywhere copyrighted music is publicly performed (whether live or from a recording) have to pay royalties. Even stores that sell musical instruments have to pay royalties to cover if a customer comes in, tries an instrument and plays a recognizable portion of a copyrighted song.
EDIT: Internet streaming is an entirely separate can of worms that is handled by a company called Sound Exchange (http://www.soundexchange.com).
-
Yup, remember the Girl Scout camp fiasco?
ASCAP tried telling the Girl Scouts they needed to buy licenses to sing songs around campfires.
So I'd assume NASA has to either pay the appropriate royalties, or get consent of the copyright holder.
-
Fuel - Metallica
Enter Sandman - Metallica
-
"Rocket Ride" - KISS
"Get Up!" - Van Halen
-
This amazing cover of The Final Countdown! :)
Ha ha ha, you made me LOL ;D
My favorite for wake up song on orbit is definitely this one "Witnesses' Waltz"
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=J_GciXA-6Ag
-
That's one very topical happy tune ! ;)
-
Would stop this silly habit. I would wake up like I do now, with what every the DJ is playing. Houston doesn't need to broadcast anything until I initiate the first morning conversation.
-

Well its an Astronaut Tradition going back from the ole' days of Gemini.
Personally I would choose the Star Wars theme.
-
I would choose AHA-Take on me ;D
-
"Here Comes The Sun" by The Beatles. (http://i154.photobucket.com/albums/s240/pburton1014/CelebrationMusicMusicalNotesI.gif)
-
That was actually the wakeup song for CDR Polansky on FD2 of STS-116.
STS-116 had a decent selection of wakeup songs all around.
-
The Light Before We Land by The Delgados
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eIfZZ1cQZss
-
"Elvis is Everywhere" by Mojo Nixon
-
Ok, alternative to my rock tastes :)....
Anything by Globus (Yoav Goren - easily the best composer on the planet right now):
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iTEppbm16yg
Or better still his collab with Hans Zimmer set to BSG (Frakking brilliant, so say we all):
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4h5rKHIcPDo
-
Well at the risk of showing my age,,,.. I like to be gently woken up not jump started..
1) If it was early in the mission I would want
Styx - "Come Sail Away"
2) If it was late in the mission I would want
Styx - "Don't let it End"
-
Maybe Ch-Check It Out by the Beastie Boys or or this cover of - Major Tom (Coming home) by Shiny Toy Guns.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wddY7qCn-ig
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cEvAu7YM2Gs
-
BSG ? Those spacecraft look very familiar to the ones found in the awesome Wing Commander games, Dralthi etc. Hmmm, who copied who ? One thing not in doubt though, stirring music !
-
Perhaps I'm one of the very few young people here, but...
Daft Punk - Around the World
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=s9MszVE7aR4
-
definitely I would have the song "Earthshine" by Rush...
I'd be 'raising my eyes' to Earthshine every so often while in orbit...
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eYU71JqXFq4
-
"Come Sail Away" by Styx
-
Supertramp - "Take The Long Way Home" (especially on landing day)
Bon Jovi - "Wanted Dead or Alive" (being completely unoriginal there... :D )
-
"Standing on Higher Ground" by The Alan Parsons Project.
-
"Free Falling" - Tom Petty?
-
Scorpions - wind of change
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HxobuyB4H38

STS-127's wake up songs haven't been all that great so far. Personal opinion :)
-
How about the 80's theme song to The Great Space Coaster? lol
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Dddm5bQeKvg
Seriously tho, I'd have to agree with Van Halens Dreams... inspiring and thought provoking, atleast it was to me growing up.
-
"Orion" by Metallica.
-
"Lower Your Eyelids to Die with the Sun" by M83 hands down. ;D
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=K2xqBP3LSa8
-
Enya- How can I keep from singing?
http://www.youtube.com/v/whIYv3_CvqU&hl=en&fs=1&
Or Sonny Rhodes, Ballad of Serenity
http://www.youtube.com/v/FviDxzvkMKo&hl=en&fs=1&
-
I'd die happy if this became a wake up song ;D
The awesome Faith No More live in England a few months ago.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZXqrGu4491A&NR=1
-
Well its not a popular position around here, but the old wake up song ritual needs to go away. Just not necessary in the age of the iPod and video feeds. Same with the bell ringing navy tradition thing that was discussed around here someplace.
BUT, that being said, its obvious:
"Don't Bring Me Down" - Electric Light Orchestra
followed by:
"Happy to be Here" - Parachute Express
or for a nice kumbaya mood:
"Love Shack" - The B-52s
-
I've been sorting out some old vinyl 45s with a view to either binning the lot or taking them to a car boot sale - and I've found a great wake up song: "I lost my heart to a starship trooper" by Sarah Brightman & Hot Gossip (1978)!!!
-
Hmmm... In order of preference:
1) "Rocket Man" by Elton John - Original, yes? ;)
2) "Life on Mars" by David Bowie
3) "Guide Me Orion" by Flaming Youth
4) "Space, Man" by Babylon Zoo
-
In honor of my wife, and a very fitting song, I'd use one of her favorites, which is a B-side to the single Winter:
Take to the Sky - Tori Amos
-
I'm looking all over the place for this song, but I can't remember who did it or what it's called or any lyrics from it. It's sung by a black woman I think, and I think the topic of the song was how she was upset that most of the promises made to us about the future of space travel have gone unfulfilled since Apollo. And I could be wrong about this, but I think that the word "Eagle" is used in the song, not that that helps much, haha. If you can think of what it is, please help me out. It's driving me nuts!
-
R.E.M. - Get Up
Here's a live performance of the song, fittingly, from Zaragoza:
]http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LJlb6d4cVB4] (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LJlb6d4cVB4).

It's "Sleeping Satellite" by Tasmin Archer!
-
That's it! Thanks a lot!
-
Without a doubt I would choose something from Pink Floyd such as Money or Hey You from the Brick in the Wall album.
-
Rise Today by Alter Bridge
-
Space Station #5 by Montrose! :D
-
Hmmm... In order of preference:
1) "Rocket Man" by Elton John - Original, yes? ;)
2) "Life on Mars" by David Bowie
3) "Guide Me Orion" by Flaming Youth
4) "Space, Man" by Babylon Zoo
Good call on "Space, Man" by Babylon Zoo (I wonder what happened to them?). That's actually the song I would probably choose, if only to raise a few laughs in Mission Control! Another good track might be the theme from "Flash Gordon" by Queen!
On a more cultural level, I might select "Caribbean Blue" by Enya. Although this is not space-related, the lyrics always remind me of a shuttle orbiting against the backdrop of Earth:
so the world goes round and round
With all you ever knew --
They say the sky high above
Is Caribbean blue...
-
Fire on High - Electric Light Orchestra
or
Spaceman - Babylon Zoo
-
I'm going to throw another one in there for "Learn to Fly" by Foo Fighters as a wake up song.
Not a "wake up" call per se, but I think a song that would be perfect for the final shuttle mission in 2010 would be "DOA", also by the Foo Fighters, just for this line, and this line alone:
Take a good hard look for the very last time
The very last one in a very long line.
Only took a second to say goodbye
Been a pleasure, but the pleasure's been mine all mine
-
Now here's a good one: "Fire In The Sky", by Jordin Kare:
<object width="425" height="344"><param name="movie" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/-Ryd_p20XEU&hl=en&fs=1&"></param><param name="allowFullScreen" value="true"></param><param name="allowscriptaccess" value="always"></param>
[edit: okay, what am I doing that's leaving the tags all over the post? (first time embedding YouTube)]
-
Only one wake-up song to have at this time of the year:
Chris De Burgh's "A Spaceman Came Travelling" :)
-
Great new wake-up song: "Satellite" by Lena Meyer-Landrut, the winning (German) entry in this year's Eurovision Song Contest ;D
-
[edit: okay, what am I doing that's leaving the tags all over the post? (first time embedding YouTube)]
When the forum software sees a link to a YouTube video it automaticaly embeds it. So if you try and copy/paste the YouTube embed script it will just grab the link out and ignore everything else. You can just delete the code and leave the link.
-
Cold Rain And Snow by the Greatful Dead.
-
And here I thought this site was full of NASA employees and contractors. Nobody has mentioned the obvious choice: Space Oddity by David Bowie 8)

NASA ASKS PUBLIC FOR FINAL SHUTTLE MISSIONS' WAKEUP SONGS
HOUSTON -- If you like music, the space program and are a little
nostalgic, NASA has the perfect opportunity for you. For the first
time, the public can help choose songs to wake up the astronauts
during the last two scheduled space shuttle missions.
Traditionally, the songs played to wake up the astronauts are selected
by friends and family of the crews. For the last two scheduled
missions, NASA is inviting the public to visit the "Wakeup Song
Contest" website to select songs from a list of the top 40 previous
wakeup calls or to submit original tunes for consideration. To vote
or submit a song, visit:
https://songcontest.nasa.gov
The two songs with the most votes from the top 40 list will be played
as crew wakeup calls on the final scheduled flight of space shuttle
Discovery. Discovery's STS-133 mission is targeted to launch on Nov.
1.
"We're looking forward to hearing which songs the public wants played
for us," STS-133 Commander Steve Lindsey said. "It's going to be a
difficult choice, because there have been so many great songs played
over the years."
Original songs must have a space theme and be submitted to NASA by 4
p.m. CST on Jan. 10, 2011. The songs will be reviewed by agency
officials and the top finalists put to a public vote. The top two
songs will be used to wake space shuttle Endeavour's STS-134 crew.
Endeavour's mission is the last scheduled space shuttle flight. It is
targeted to launch on Feb. 26, 2011.
"Space shuttle crews really enjoy the morning wake-up music," STS-134
Commander Mark Kelly said. "While we don't have the best quality
speaker in the space shuttle, it will be interesting to hear what the
public comes up with. We are looking forward to it."
The song contest campaign follows NASA's ongoing "Face in Space"
project. It invites the public to send electronic images of their
faces into orbit aboard one of the final remaining space shuttle
missions. To submit your image, visit:
http://faceinspace.nasa.gov

Theme for Firefly: "You can't take the sky from me!"
Its the only appropriate song to commemorate the last flight of Shuttle.

I always find it hard to wake up in the morning, especially from music. This helps.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EhT_HihW30s&feature=player_detailpage
-
I have thought about this and have been tempted to suggest all sorts of weird and wonderful music (Corvus Corax Breton March being one that would suit my Black Ship "RAVEN" ;) ) but I am a child of the 50's and 60's; recently I have gotten back into watching Dr. Who. after a long hiatus, (no one seemed to be as good as Tom Baker; jelly baby anyone ) but Matt Smith seems to have captured the insanity of the Doctor's life and the writers are doing the series justice; but the old theme by Delia still tugs at the heart strings; I had two 4 track reel to reel tape recorders in the same period she was working, but never got as good obviously, but it was fun; so in honor of her and the Doctor, I'm uploading the original tape, from the Manchester U. story of Delia Derbyshire: musician, composer, and woman extraordinaire; this is my choice for music to wake up to in Space

I would want to hear a true masterpiece!
