If this was somewhere else, I haven't found it...  Anyway, PAO just announced that Atlantis has the heaviest mid-deck load out ever for both launch and entry on STS-122.

Yeah, Bob Dempsey mentioned that during today's Mission Status Briefing.  He said it was ONE OF (not THE) heaviest going up, and IS the heaviest coming down.  I believe the mass was 2400 lbs.   It might have been 1400 lbs., but I think that was the water transfer number.

Wake up was at 11:53 PM CST.  The song was Over the Rainbow (not the Wizard of Oz version) sent by Dan Tani's wife.

After 2010, when the station is up and running with 6 astronauts, doing scientific research much more than today, a internal downmass of 10kg per Soyuz (40kg per year) will be enough. And no external downmass at all. Simply amazing.

Potentially moving up the undocking 10 minutes or so, because of arrays feathering being faster than usual. Right now, taking test distance measurements.

The determining factor to undock is now the feathering of the Russian arrays, that can be as early as 10 minutes before the scheduled undock time, or as late as only 2 minutes before that time.

10 minutes of Ku after planned undock time.

Interesting that flyaround is at 470 feet (at the moment)  I recollect that this is usually at 600 feet, the annular track on the graphic also indicates that this is inside the usual range.

I'm not certain, but I believe they shoot to be at 600 feet at the - Rbar point.  This is exactly what the green line on the flyaround screen was indicating.

Thanks for the coverage Ford Mustang! The flyaround of the station is my favorite part of the mission, but I wasn't able to see it live.
Are they going to replay the flyaround now or is it delayed for some reason (sorry I have no sound here)?

EDIT: replay started right after I posted  :)

It is coming up soon.  Right now is the replay of the undocking, with flyaround after that, I would guess.

On the graphic we see here, What is the difference beteeen the yellow & green traces?

The yellow trace is derived from the orbiter's rendezvous nav state vectors.

The green trace is filtered Trajectory Control Sensor (TCS) data.

And you didn't ask but I'll tell you anyway, the cyan trace is raw radar data and the magenta trace is handheld laser data.

Interesting that flyaround is at 470 feet (at the moment)  I recollect that this is usually at 600 feet, the annular track on the graphic also indicates that this is inside the usual range.

The crew can start the flyaround at any range over 400 ft on the +Vbar (in front of ISS/on the left of the graphic). They allow a small opening rate to continue so that they hit 600 ft around the time of arrival on the -Rbar (above ISS, on the top of the graphic). Once at 600 ft they remain between 600-700 ft for the remainder of the flyaround.

Normal deorbit prep is 4 hours of prep and 1 hour from TIG.  (not counting post sleep activities).  Each additional orbit adds 90 minutes.  If no landing made at end of day, still need to back out of deorbit configuration (open PLB doors, etc).

Post MMT briefing at 3:30 Eastern time.  Look for more questions about landing Wednesday for certain (except in case of technical difficulties) or about possibly staying on orbit until Thursday if KSC weather is bad on Wednesday.  Reporters basically fishing to see if mission is time limited by DoD plans to shoot down the failed satellite.

"After 2010, when the station is up and running with 6 astronauts, doing scientific research much more than today, a internal downmass of 10kg per Soyuz (40kg per year) will be enough. And no external downmass at all. Simply amazing. "

First, I think Dempsey said he believed it was the heaviest going up but hadn't confirmed, but it was the heaviest going down.

And no, 10 kg per Soyuz is not adequate - it will severely shape the type of research going on.  It is not the desirement, but the requirement.

Just one thing to add to the deorbit prep timeline that Robert/collectspace posted earlier today:  go/nogo for fluid loading is usually about an hour before deorbit burn.  That's one of the milestones I look for.

My statement was kinda sarcastic. :)

There it is again, the old logistics problem. We are talking about two orders of magnitude of downmass capability missing. And no realistic solutions in sight (on time).

PAO: Is it an above and beyond achievement to rollout while undocking?

Cain: We knew that between this mission and the next, that the biggest thing was to turnaround the Launch Complex.  Pad performance was outstanding on this mission, cleanest since RTF.  Key was to be able to get vehicle ready, and the pad to be ready to accept a vehicle.

Just about 20 minutes before Atlantis' crew was preparing to go to sleep, capcom Stephen Robinson called up to the orbiter indicating that a heater for one of their aft vernier RCS thrusters had failed and warned that an alarm might sound as a result.

That call was soon followed by a second warning, this time that multiple heaters had failed. After a brief (routine) comm outage, Robinson asked commander Steve Frick to cycle the switch that enables the heaters, so that the ground could watch if the system warmed while the crew sleeps.

So they're losing multiple aft VRCS heaters? Doesn't that automatically deselect those jets and making the, "NO-GO" for firing? This happened for jet L5L prior to launch of STS-121 in July 2006.

Here is a quick transcript of the second and third calls about the heaters...

Quote
"We are looking at all the heaters in the manifold 5 on the aft are now going down, so you are probably going to get three more messages, an L5D, an R5D and an R5R all within the next hour sequentially," radioed Robinson. "No action for you, its not going to reconfigure your aft tail right now. We may have some more words for you on the other side of the comm gap. We'll be back in about 3.5 minutes."

"Okay, we copy Steve, understand that there is no chance to do a heater swap or inhibiting those cautions?" replied Frick.

"Well Steve, there are no other heaters to swap to and when we come back after the comm out, we're probably going to have you try cycling the heater switch. But we want to talk just a little bit more. See you in a bit."

Quote
"Atlantis, Houston, we're back with you. Switch to throw, panel A14," called Robinson.

"Okay, go ahead Steve," responded Frick.

"Okay, this is just to see if it happens to be the switch. Panel A14 on the bottom row, is the Aft RCS Jet #5, take to 'Off' with a mark, and back to 'Auto', said Robinson.

"Okay, it is currently in the 'Auto' position, coming to 'Off', standby, mark, and coming back to 'Auto', standby, mark," said Frick.

"Okay, we'll take a look at the data here and see if it warms up, in the meantime you should get those other three messages within the next 25 to 30 minutes. We are not able to inhibit those particular ones but as I said it shouldn't reconfigure your ship at all, once they go, that should be enough," said Robinson.

"Okay, we copy all Steve. We'll punch them off as they come up, all aft tail only, and after the couple we'll be good for the night. Thanks," replied Frick.

The jets can still be used.

The real issue with failed heaters would be the injector temperatures or propellant line/manifold temperatures - depending on which heaters have failed - the Mission Control Center can monitor these temps.  Lack of heaters and infrequent firing can possibly allow the temps to go out of limits.

Maneuvering the orbiter to a more thermally friendly attitude or intentionally firing the jets for small durations to warm them up are some of the options available.

Bottom line is this is not a major concern at this point.

Thanks.  I couldn´t find pictures of earlier tracks to compare.

There are relative motion plots in Section 1 of the Rendezvous FDF, which NASA has made available here:

The undocking/flyaround plot is the last one in Section 1. The 600-700 ft flyaround started with STS-115; the longer range is required to reduce RCS plume impingement on solar arrays outboard of the alpha joints. Previous flights used a 400-500 ft flyaround range.
