Any news about Hans' health so far? Hope he's well again soon!
Who said it was Hans?
-
Since Hans was scheduled to perform the first spacewalk and he is now replaced by Stanley Love it's likely he's the one that requested the PMC just prior to docking.
-
I thought it was clear it was Hans that was ill, seeing as he was the one replaced on the first EVA

No, As pointed out before thats just people jumping to a conclusion.
It may be that someone else is ill and Hans is best to replace them and then Stan Love can replace him. Shuffling people around to get the best fit is a good practice.
-
ISS flight director update will be half an hour earlier at 11:00 UTC

Could be, in theory. But if something looks like a duck ... it usually is one.

Yes, I heard that too.

Oberpfaffenhofen guy ;-)
-
Ron Spencer told they are trying to do tasks today that they would normally do on other flight days.
Equipment will be transfered, Eyharts gets his tour around the ISS earlier, Love gets 4 hours to study EVA1, and we will be taking more detailed images of the OMS pod blanket that would normally be done on FD 5.

Has anyone seen the Flight Day 4 Execute Package yet?
-
Well, it appears Schlegel's sickness isn't too severe... he's floating around normally, performing tasks and talking, probably feeling much better now. I'd bet he'll be able to perform EVA-2 normally.
BTW, thanks a lot for everyone who contributed with updates yesterday's night (mixed with good humour too :) ), it was awesome to be able to catch up with all the unforeseen events so fast. Thanks also to John44 for the fantastic video recordings he makes, just the perfect complement to this forum.
-
Hans is looking well so far. Nice to see.

That will bne the one uplinked on Flight Day 4....Ie tomorrow ;)
-
German magazin FOCUS just reports that Hans Schlegel is ok again and will participate in the 2nd EVA.
-
Good to see that Hans is not very bad. Hope he will be better soon and able to perform EVA 2.
I think Hans and Stan only have switched tasks for tomorrow and Hans will do the work inside the station and shuttle that Stan was planned to do.

How are they going to perform the OMS focused inspection the Execute Package talks about? Is the OBSS designed to look at loose blankets or will they just use cameras in the SSRMS?
-
CAPCOM having a light chat with Schlegel, saying he looks good... his answer was "Yes, today I put on my makeup" :)

-
Wasn't that Leeland Melvin?

I also think he talked to Leeland, although Hans was in the middle of the picture at that moment

Very informative read Chris. I have to say I do appreciate the lack of sensationalism and dramatics in your writings. Makes it required reading with pure information, which is very refreshing.

I have created a separate thread for discussion of the astronaut illness. I'm sure we all would appreciate it if any discussion on that topic moved over there, and perhaps moderators will consider moving errant posts to there instead of deleting them wholesale like yesterday. Already this morning, this FD4 thread's first page was full of it's-Hans / sez-who chatter :)

As my opnion is the same as NASA's, that the health of an astronaut is his private affair (as long as it does not put the goals of the mission at risk), I just would like to add an interesting note of the past here that nearly had this implication:
The situation reminds me of Apollo 9, when also an EVA had to be delayed. At that time NASA did not have to options of today with a seven-person crew - and a cancelled EVA then would have meant that the Lunar Module would have been (re-)tested on Apollo 10, and consequently Pete Conrad of Apollo 12 would be known as the first man on the Moon today...
As far as the Columbus mission is concerned: NASA had a long experience list in improvising and I am confident that Stan Love can do the EVA #1 tasks just as well as Hans Schlegel - as we will see tomorrow!
-
Would be nice if they replaced all cameras with HD's , that hand held HD camera yesterday was awesome in terms of res.. even if it was down converted for NTSC

"“lifted blanket corner” in this area means for
entry, but the OPO and MER is going to recommend that it be categorized as a "TPS
Degraded" case, which carries no restrictions on entry "as is"."
also "O2 needed for additional docked day: 28.5 lbm (41.5 KWH)" - not much in the way of weight..
more good news
" we anticipate that
we will be able to make a 12+1+2 mission as well as have O2 to transfer to ISS"

Lets not get too carried away with this HD thing! The station has been using HD camcorders for soemtime. As the system grow they are able to downlink the AV O/Ps from the camera as data, hence by passing the usual ISS audio systems.
As for being in HD resoultion as far as the ground station, thats probabbly pushing the comms circuits a little bit too much

Hi guys. I'm new to this forum so I have a lot of catching up to do.
I tuned into NASA TV about an hour ago and Peggy was showing the camera a bag of something that looked like foam rubber discs and then pulled out something that looked like an old tape deck reel. They were talking about some kind of damage that had occurred. Was this some stuff that rode up on the STS-122, like it broke loose during liftoff? Does anyone know what they were talking about?

has not yet had a chance to discuss what a “lifted blanket corner” in this area means for
entry, but the OPO and MER is going to recommend that it be categorized as a "TPS

and based on the view that we have. The Focused inspection will tell us more, but we just
wanted you to know how it is seen at this time."

This isn't particularly helpful, but going back (time-slip is cool :) ) it looked like a transfer bag and the discussion sounded like trash collection. (Peggy called it "the 1073 bag" if that helps someone more knowledgeable about transfer.) Peggy was talking about parts of something (a "flex pack assembly"?) that went in a Progress a while back as trash.

Well, that makes sense, I guess. I just thought I heard about something being damaged, but it was toward the end of that conversation when I tuned in so I probably misunderstood.

Thats right. These flex pack were used for RED(Resistive Exercise Device).

That's Destiny, the camera is located towards Harmony, but the hatch at the end of the corridor is not PMA 1 leading to Zarya, but PMA2 leading to the Shuttle. Besides, the bike on the left side of the image is Destiny's. They haven't had time to get Harmony so cluttered... yet. Not really sure what the workstation is, though, it's not ROBO.
-
This one made me think: "Hey buddy watch where you're putting your hand!"
-
I've found this graphic http://spaceflight.nasa.gov/station/lab_racks.html, showing the different racks in Destiny. The rack Peggy's working in is HRF#1, so either she's performing some experiment (writing a journal, or typing in some results of a physiology experiment) or it's just a multipurpose computer she's using to update the IMS or just take a look at her schedule.
-
That's Destiny
Ah, that makes more sense.

-
SRMS has reached the first focused inspection position.
-
First detailed view of the lifted thermal blanket. It doesn't look nearly as serious as it did in the earlier photos!
-
IMO it's just the corner that lifted a little bit. No tear or seams comming lose (i think)
-
It looks like it could just be pushed back in place by a EVA glove from an EVAer. These blankets were shown to have a lot of 'memory' during STS-117, so that if they are pushed back by hand, they stay pushed back. Obviously it will probably need some pins and stitching ala STS-117 OMS blanket repair so it will stand up to the aero loads during entry. It will be interesting to see what the analysis shows after the FI results are presented to the DAT team, and if a repair ala STS-117 will be needed again for this area.

I really like how they're letting us see this live, with the computer process and all.

Spacewalk tomorrow is going to be as planned pre-flight.
-
No impact to Endeavour's mission (STS-123) if this mission was extended to 13 days.
-
Will let the experts review results on OMS Blanket before deciding if they need to repair with an EVA.
-
Rest of mission will be performed normally with Hans and Rex on EVA-2 unless Flight Surgeons feel the need to change.
-
Once DEXTRE has been installed at station, would it be capable of tamping down or repairing a lifted or torn shuttle blanket ?? Guess I'm asking if the motor control would be fine enough to do a repair of this type without an EVA ??
-
(Marcia Dunn) ... I would call that a tear...
(John Shannon's thought bubble) I'm sure you would, Marcia. I'm sure you would.
The expression on his face as she said that was priceless.

While it's possible base on what I've read regarding fine motor control, I'd say that it's unlikely in terms of anything related to shuttle/tps repair.... I expect that DEXTRE will be used in highly planned and rehearsed fashion with planning on the ground and then execution on station..
-
The inspections have been performed, now powering down the sensors and returning the arm with the OBSS to its previous position to allow for Columbus transfer tomorrow.

Actually a cool photo as I always imagined the room to be larger for some strange reason!
-
In case you are watching NASA-TV right now, you may be wondering who is controlling the cameras on the ISS providing these different views of the station/shuttle complex. The cameras on the ISS right now are being controlled by the INCO officer in MCC-H to look at how various areas of the station are faring. It can be somewhat dizzying as you never know where INCO is going to look next, this is normal as the ISS/shuttle crew are now in a pre-EVA #1 procedure briefing on board the ISS, that is why the A/G channel is very quiet right now.

Passing over Baja California, with the P4 and P6 radiators almost in-line with P1's.

If you are watching on NASA TV, the complex is passing over the northern part of Baja California, on a northeast pass over the Central USA at an attitude of 208 statue miles.
