Realmedia backup entrypoint servers added

for the tech people: they point to kscreal2.ksc.nasa.gov using rtsp on port 8080
kscreal1.ksc.nasa.gov is also available but is not working at the moment...

All the Yahoo links work fine.  99% of the time that someone has a problem with the Yahoo links there is not actually a problem.  Must be on your end.

This one calls for using wmp version 9 and I have version 11. They don't answer emails. Anybody knows what the problem is?

Sorry for late reply. It just doesn't work. Since the site is so user unfriendly, I have no idea how to make it work. I try to start it and leads into a video player window, starts buffering and never goes beyond 0%

After you click the link - you click the "Click here to experience" link at the bottom of that page. It'll prompt you to install the ActiveX control, say yes, and you'll soon be seeing video. I did it just now.

I have done that, and installed the activeX contrlo, and now shows again the error message stating that I am using WMP version 11, but my WMP is version 11
Same thing happens at home

Has anyone found a way to watch any NASA TV channels on an iPhone? As great as the device is, it doesn't play very many media files online.  Not even the Quicktime link on the NASA TV page.

What is the story with the lack of attention to NASA TV for STS-124?

Always the same camera, no audio...

Coverage doesn't start until noon EDT per the schedule, so we're lucky they kept the shot up overnight - don't complain :)

As noted in the thread for today's launch attempt, nothing special about it -- they've always done that period in a shuttle countdown that way.

http://webcams.ksc.nasa.gov/ImgCap/default.htm

This site used to present four different webcams that do not show in other NASA webcam sites.

They were not great resolution ones, but each veiw was linked to another page that showed some 10 snapshots of every 5 minutes before.

Well, that one is no longer available, and when I click the favorites shortcut, it redirects to the KSC media archive.

Anyone knows it it's just been disconnected or moved to another page?

Thanks!

i'm clicking the link

http://playlist.yahoo.com/makeplaylist.dll?id=1368163

using ie7. link opens in a new window. when media player starts i get a 'windows media player cannot play this file' error message. yet if i open the link in firefox i get the stream no problem in a firefox window.

any suggestions why it won't play in media player? do i need special codecs?

cheers

Thanks :)  I added the ISS Mission Audio  (I incorrectly had it listed under NASA TV Audio.)

You'll see it below NASA TV (Education CH)

Hi m330533,
Actually, you should bookmark:
http://science.ksc.nasa.gov/cgi-bin/rrg2.pl?encoder/lc39.rm
(Bookmark this instead of the RTSP IP directly)

The bad news is that this cam is rarely working.  I added it to the bottom of the list above with a note that it only occasionally works.

NASA LAUNCHES INTERNATIONAL SPACE STATION WEBCAM STREAMING VIDEO

HOUSTON -- Internet visitors can now see the Earth as never before --
live from the International Space Station via streaming video, seven
days a week.

The streaming video views of Earth and the exterior structure of the
station are from cameras mounted outside the laboratory complex,
orbiting Earth at 17,500 miles an hour at an altitude of 220 miles.
The video is transmitted to the ground -- and Web viewers --
primarily while the astronauts aboard the complex are asleep, usually
from about 1 p.m. to 1 a.m. CST. When live feeds are not available, a
map showing the current location and path of the station will be
streamed from NASA's Mission Control in Houston.

The streaming video will include audio of communications between
Mission Control and the astronauts, when available. When the space
shuttle is docked to the station, the stream will include video and
audio of those activities.

The International Space Station, a unique partnership between the
space agencies of the United States, Russia, Japan, Canada and
Europe. Construction began in 1998 and will be completed in 2010.
Eighteen crews have lived aboard the orbiting complex since 2000,
including the current crew of three. Station residents have conducted
important scientific experiments and gathered data to help assist
future missions to the moon and Mars.

To view the streaming station video and for more information about the
station and its crew, visit:

Somehow I recalled about this one and started it successfully at the office, early on STS-119 launch day and had a blast until the middle of FD4.

This one was the only one I got conexion for at the office.

Now I get a "server not available" from both office and home.

Is it just me or Any one help?

I couldn't easily find a way to record the live stream, but you can use Firefox combined with http://www.downloadhelper.net/ (http://www.downloadhelper.net/) to record from their archives. Hope that helps.

If you are having trouble with streaming, then you might want to try this:

http://www.aetherstation.net/nasatv/

Set up by a friend of mine, it's a flash-based stream of NASA TV (700kbps) which looks pretty damn good and sits in a browser window. It'll probably work if you have a funky network configuration that doesn't let you use WMP/Real/QT etc.

Direct link won't work. http://brevard.fl.scanamerica.us

It is the KSC trunked radio system on the left channel, which includes security, fire, launch ops, etc. The right channel is UHF/VHF from local airports, the STA, Coast Guard, and AF ops.

Has anyone found a way to watch any NASA TV channels on an iPhone? As great as the device is, it doesn't play very many media files online.  Not even the Quicktime link on the NASA TV page.

Not to shamelessly self promote, but if you download the Ustream app to your iPhone you can watch Spacevidcast Live on that app which is usually on either NASA TV, one of our shows, or a launch of sorts.  When we go to live HD streaming I'm not sure if the iPhone will play that or not.  We're usually only streaming HD during shuttle launches and landings though as the live HD media our there is... sparse to say the least.

Another NASA TV option for iPhone that does not involve an app is to use the website http://iphone.akamai.com/

This is a test setup by Akamai for the new iPhone 3 http video streaming.  Seems like a pretty good quality even without WiFi enabled.

Mike

EDIT:: It appears you can also pause and use a 30 sec replay feature.  Seems pretty nice.

Here's where I'm specifically wanting to download from:

If you use Firefox you can also get a nifty little add-on called "DownloadHelper" that will let you save them. For a few dollars, you can get some other add-ons to it that will let you convert to video into several different formats.

On the subject of pictures , is it just me or is there a deterioration in quality of the NASA TV streaming? My video is showing all straight lines as being braided and pixellated which I never used to get and generally an all round poor picture. See attached

I recently upgraded to 20Mbps from my ISP and I thought performance would improve.

Is there a better source for NASA TV programming?

I was watching the other day before leaving for Florida for the launch attempts this week and saw alot of very interesting programming. One such item was a question and answer session with Gene Cernan, then, they played footage of several of the Apollo missions.  The only title and guide information was things such as Video File.

I'm sure there is quite a bit of programming that I would DVR from the NASA channel if there was a listing more descriptive than just Video File or some of the other generic titles they use.

Thanks

I am running 0.8.6d

Confusing - although I guess that's just because it's new.  The options for "convert/save" are better now for the beginner user but I thought it was easier under the old interface.

Has anyone done any studies of the latency of the different video feeds?

If you compare a few of the different video streams side-by-side, they don't match up.

I've noticed that the Real Media stream is about a minute 'ahead' of the yahoo video feeds. The Real Media stream also seems to be about 10 seconds behind 'realtime' (if you compare shots during the launch that show the countdown clock against the internet countdown clock).

Also, if anyone knows of a way to get NasaTV on the AppleTV I would be very appreciative!

A lot (most?) of that has to do with the settings on YOUR video playing software and the buffer.
Title: Re: Live NASA TV/Camera Audio/Video Links
Post by: Ford Mustang on 08/25/2009 01:15 pm
The Yahoo feeds are about 2 minutes behind the real time NASA TV, this is because they have been running for 45 days, and have accumulated the lag.  Nothing we can do about that, of course, it's up to Yahoo to restart them.

EDIT:  It seems like even NASA.gov's Public Channel feeds are 2 minutes behind, the only one that is remotely close (10 seconds behind realtime) is the Media channel feed, which is 150kb/s..

Thanks.

I find it funny, though, that the media channel is real-time, but even on NASA.gov's public channel link, it's now anywhere from 2 to 2.5 minutes behind the real time video.  If Yahoo gets their public feed from NASA somehow, then that would be the cause.. and it'd be up to contacting NASA PAO (I would guess) to get the problem fixed..

I'd use the media channel for updates, but it's 320x240, blowing it up to 640x480 creates so much pixelation..

EDIT:  It actually looks like NASA is using Yahoo's feeds, the "Brought to you by Yahoo" says it all.  This is a bit confusing and frustrating.  :P

Over the last few weeks, we’ve set up and begun doing a beta test broadcast of NASA TV onto your Apple iPhone, iPad, and iPod Touch. We tweeted it out early yesterday to our Twitter followers before the landing of the Space Shuttle Atlantis once we were sure it was ready to have more of a spotlight shone on it. It’s also been linked on the NASA TV web page in the left column for the last couple of weeks since we set up the stream.

NASA Television via Satellite (AMC3 Transponder 15C)

Note: Effective Wednesday, Sept. 1, 2010 at 2 p.m. Eastern, NASA TV is changing the primary audio configuration for each of its four channels to AC-3, making each channels secondary audio MPEG 1 Layer II.

In continental North America, Alaska and Hawaii, NASA Television's Public, Education, Media and HD channels are MPEG-2 digital C-band signals carried by QPSK/DVB-S modulation on satellite AMC-3, transponder 15C, at 87 degrees west longitude. Downlink frequency is 4000 MHz, horizontal polarization, with a data rate of 38.86 Mhz, symbol rate of 28.1115 Ms/s, and 3/4 FEC. I don't think so Tomdou. I remember when my broadband fell over and had to use dailup for a day (eek). Had to go to NASA Audio, as there wasn't anything under 150Kbs.

After talking to the ULA webmaster it seems that they have discontinued their use of Windows media, and as a result VLC is no longer a viable tool for EELV coverage (and wanst really good for SPaceX feed) In fact it seems the entire industry is moving over to flash so really need to find a new program. I do use camtasia to do screen recordings and timelaspes which work well, but the real need is for a rapid screenshot program.  I set up VLC to save to a particular directory and to take a shot when i push the space bar, so I can quickly get many screen shots especially during the first moments of launch, but things like printscreen or the snip tool just arent as effective. ANyone have advise for a good program to make up for that?

Even flash (which is just an embedded player) has to get a feed from somewhere ... probably of flv video, the same format that youtube uses and other flash players. VLC should be able to play the flv format so it's just a question of finding the feed source as many addons do in Firefox so the addon can download flash videos.

Easiest way of telling is the NASA HD Logo (It should be crystal sharp), I really hope they haven't added a speed checker. :( Spacevidcast had one and it kept flicking between SD and HD even though I could play HD just fine.

The Spacevidcast player is HD and you can override the auto selection in the lower right corner to whatever bitrate works on your system. Some hardcore space geeks don't like the lower third T-, L- and Ascent info we add, but I think it actually adds a lot to the overall launch (the ascent data is particularly awesome). Anyhow, I'll end my shameless self promotion :)

I like the ascent numbers. I think CNN also do it sometimes, but they seem to be a bit all over the place within 20 seconds when I've viewed on youtube.

Used one of your ascents to show a newbie friend not too long ago. He - and I quote - "liked how the numbers were going up fast" ;D

He's reasonably clever, honest ;)

I stole the idea from Fox News (may be where you saw it, but CNN may do it too) and expanded on it. I think the super interesting part is when the altitude starts going down and the speed starts going up. Makes for a good conversation starter. The other odd thing I have never been able to figure out... The downrange numbers always appear to be correct on-screen but the numbers NASA PAO calls out are nowhere near what we have. I have yet to figure that one out.

What's the news here ? Everything seems to be through UStream now. Seems like a good service but on my medium spec computer using Chrome my CPU is at 100% when streaming making it difficult to do other tasks. The available streams through an IP seem to be at low resolution. Ironically I never had the bandwidth for theYahoo 1200 kbps stream until I recently updated to BT broadband at 19 meg. Now the yahoo stream seems to be no longer available. I think UStream is supposed to be HD but it's player is very CPU intensive, that's why I always stream using a separate player application.

EDIT: Found the problem. Flash player does not hardware accelerate in Linux using Chrome. Started playing NASA TV on my Windows machine.

On another issue, it still astounds me, seeing as my country the UK is funding the ESA that ...

1. There is no NASA TV or ESA TV on UK Freeview.

2. ESA do not rebroadcast NASA TV or even any of their own programming as a stream.

For agencies that bang on about public outreach this just seems extraordinary. I can imagine so many examples that people unaware of what is going on up there might encounter NASA/ESA TV. I know there are some sat channels but I'm not sure how accessible they are even with Sky or something like that (which I can't afford). This makes the lack of streaming options doubly frustrating. I should launch my own sat, or fund my own Freeview channel :D

ESA stream can be found here: http://spaceinvideos.esa.int/esalive . It's also on a satellite on 9 east usually.

NASA TV is sometimes rebroadcast on Reuters which is on 22 west when there is a launch. But if your expecting it on UK Freeview or Sky UK it just is never going to happen. Not enough demand, and especially with Freeview, not the capacity to carry such channel that would get very little viewers.
Title: Re: Live NASA TV/Camera Audio/Video Links
Post by: Michael Z Freeman on 12/08/2013 01:38 pm
Thanks for the info there  ;D

Is there evidence for lack of interest ? I wonder if any studies have been done on this to investigate the possible level of interest and viewers ? I'll do some digging around and possibly start another thread if there isn't already one as this is OT. If it were broadcast it would need funding from the UK Space Agency, similar to the way BBC Parliament is funded by the BBC via the license fee, although it the case of the UK Space it would be the British tax payer.

EDIT: We're caught in a paradox. There's no demand for NASA/ESA TV on Freeview because in the UK very few actually know that ESA even exists according to this survey ...

A pilot survey of attitudes to space sciences and exploration among British school children (http://oro.open.ac.uk/15620/)

"Of those surveyed, 33% were interested in space to 'discover a new planet', and 24% to find life on another planet. When asked to list space exploration organisations 77% listed NASA. Six of those surveyed listed ESA (<0.5%). The data bring starkly to light, despite the Huygens landing on Titan and Mars Express, the lack of awareness of the existence of ESA among a new generation of European school children."

I'll make further posts about this on this thread (http://forum.nasaspaceflight.com/index.php?topic=542.0).

Yes. Still getting the skip back every few minutes. The last few seconds of audio repeats.

I'm trying to figure out the time frame when my interest in spaceflight originated.  As an avid C-Band satellite TV viewer of the late 70's early 80's, NASA Select TV came on the air sometime during this period in time.
I do remember the early STS- single digit flight designations, then the alphanumeric mission coding change due to the upcoming SLC-6 polar orbit launches via Discovery.

I have watched via an analog C-band reciever and dish mover. The NASA TV channels have always been over on the Satcom satellites, namely Satcom F1 originally then Satcome F1-R, and as of Jan 28, 2014 the following C-Band and newer Ku-Band ifferings are available.

NASA TV is available in continental North America, Alaska and Hawaii on AMC-18C. A Digital Video Broadcast (DVB) compliant Integrated Receiver Decoder (IRD) is needed for reception. Below are parameters for each channel:

Uplink provider = AMC 18 C
Transponder = 3C
105 degrees W
C-Band

I am about to get the old 10 ft mesh BUD(Big Ugly Dish) back into service with a newer digital receiver.

Does anyone know exactly when NASA Select began transmitting via C-Band?  And would anyone happen to have a screenshot of the test colourbars with the time, Satellite and Transponder info along with NASA Select TV text on the screen?  That would be a gem for my collection.

I'm getting ready for the upcomming SLS launches to accompany the NSF threads titled SLS-5 Update thread-Day 10.

Thank you in advance!

Would any one know what happened to the Live feed of the viewing of the Earth from the ISS? There seem to be a great number of wondering why the view of the Earth has been replaced with the map in Mission Control showing the position of the ISS. This is just wrong. Allow so many of to see life on board the ISS and be able to listen in to Mission Control and the crews aboard the ISS. If any know please let me know. wc

I can't remember the specifics right now, but I vaguely remember that there's a broken component on station that handles this feed, and with all the activity of the recent past, they haven't had a chance to fix it yet.

EDIT:  Ah....

Nothing is broken, it appears when they went home for the weekend it was left on that screen. Friday had plenty of video of activity on the ISS and you can hear mission control and the crews still as normal.

I'd expect that Monday you can see the Earth again ;)

You know, I hate to do this, but am I the only one unable to find the mission audio links?
I appreciate the real time archive you are doing. However, I rather like listening in on them from one of my tablets that I leave set up to NASA mission audio sites.
However, of late, I haven't been able to get a single stream up and running. I've tried the ISS live ones and it appears as though the ISS page is also just giving the video only.
For example, for years now I would just set up this page http://www.nasa.gov/178952main_Mission_Audio_UP.asx  on various devices because of the low data rates and be good to go. However, for me, this has not been working.

I am also curious: What method are you utilizing to make the wonderful archives? Is there an additional source I have not attempted?

I was trying to figure out folks were posting screen captures from NASA TV since they changed to the ustream format.  I used to use the feed through VLC and it was so easy...I was hoping to find out in this thread what the workaround was.  I started searching and found this post by Chris http://forum.nasaspaceflight.com/index.php?topic=33534.msg1134894#msg1134894 (http://forum.nasaspaceflight.com/index.php?topic=33534.msg1134894#msg1134894) that describes a free software called Greenshot.  I followed the suggestions in that other link and now I am a happy camper!  I am posting here to document the fix in case somebody else comes looking.

There has been no audio for several days on http://www.nasa.gov/multimedia/isslivestream.asx.  Has NASA stopped broadcasting the audio on purpose or is there a technical issue?

Does anyone know of a decent ISS audio stream to listen to?  The audio quality at USTREAM http://www.ustream.tv/channel/live-iss-stream is very poor/unintelligible and the stream at http://www.nasa.gov/multimedia/isslivestream.asx that I usually listen to is not working.  Thanks.

Can anyone give advice as to what is the best way to stream NASATV in the UK?

I tried to watch the Orion launch this morning, and it was a hopeless task. In the run-up to launch there was load of buffering and the audio kept looping back and repeating. At T-15, it locked up completely. (I ended up watching on a BBC News stream, but missed the lift-off and the picture was plastered with pointless BBC caption bars...)

Now I realise that there would have been heavy demand this afternoon, but I'm also confused by the fact that there are three different channels (Public, Media & Educator) and two different sources (Flash and UStream?).There also seem to be different kbps speed settings available.

Can anyone cast any light on whether any particular option/ settings are systematically more reliable?

Thanks

Just keep trying all the alternate sources... There is no "best" one as even in the US we lost out (I saw it all until L-4 and then didn't get it back until L+30.) Thankfully NASA did acknowledge the failure during the interview with the social media guy, but I'm not sure they can find a way around that.

I'd like to know as well. Stream failiure ! I have not done some kind of benchmark, but I think ustream performance is worse than windows media or real media ever was (I thought RM is some ancient discontinued thing?). Is there a way in the UK to pick up the satellite feed with a bigger than standard, motorised dish plus booster ? Or is that never gonna happen ? I have thought of pusuading my government or the ESA to put a dedicated channel on our digital TV, but that could be a very long painful process.

Hi Barney,

You won't get the satellite NASA TV is broadcast on 24/7, its under the horizon. But you can tune into Reuters on 22W 11128H 14300 1080i50 . They'll show major launches most of the time, You'll only need a 1 meter dish to get that in the UK.

For me, Ustream showed a buffering wheel every 3-4 seconds for EFT-1, but the flash version of NTV 3 worked flawlessly in 720p mode.

Hello spacers,

I feel that ustream chat is not enough.

Is there anyone using tinychat, paltalk, or hangouts during events such as launches or space symposiums and co ?

I live in a remote place (paris, france), where no one gather in bars for such events, and i never heard of this kind of internet congregations besides written forums.

It would be great to even test this solution before such events happens.

I found tinychat a good solution (free, simple, up to 10 video users two way communication)

Does someone know of a better service ?

The audio portion of the ISS streaming feed http://www.ustream.tv/channel/live-iss-stream appears to have changed.  Russian audio is now in one channel and US audio is in another.  The translation of Russian audio in no longer being passed.  Can anyone in the know confirm this is a permanent change?

Can this thread be updated seeing as its a sticky ? It lacks all the Ustream and Livestream (why not include ESA?) links. Plus for lower spec systems there is a problems with these sites still using Flash which is high CPU usage (until they move on to HTML5), it can be difficult to take screenshots and so forth. So "livestreamer" ( http://docs.livestreamer.io/ ) could be covered with command lines for the various links. The only thing is the utility bypasses how NASA and other agencies would like us using these streams (or maybe they don't really mind?). At least Livestreamer is respectful in its approach and does not use the dreaded "rip" word. There is a legitimate usage when some can't even watch the stream properly because of Flash.

Thanks, I'll look into it and gather some info. In the meantime I found an app in the Windows app store; NASA TV Live (https://www.microsoft.com/en-gb/store/apps/nasa-tv-live/9wzdncrcwvzs). It seems to work OK but I've only had it playing for a few minutes. It's a welcome departure from tying everything to Flash in the browser (nice as that is for free !).
