Author Topic: VKD-55 RS EVA (9/13? Nauka outfitting): Nov 17, 2022 [Prokopiev, Petelin?]  (Read 21038 times)

After the last two Russian EVAs departed from the sequential order (Cristoforetti's VKD-ESA and the wrapping-up VKD-54A), we should be back to it with this upcoming spacewalk. The objectives for it appear to be different from what was expected before, featuring preparations of the radiator that is to be installed on Nauka at a later date, as soon as the subsequent VDK-56 a week later (Nov 25th). In particular, it seems the main objective is the draining of nitrogen from the radiator:

ISS, October 31. Russian cosmonauts will spend about seven hours outside the International Space Station (ISS) during their spacewalk under the national space program scheduled for November 17, TASS special reporter, Roscosmos cosmonaut Dmitry Petelin said on Monday.

Petelin and his teammate Sergey Prokopyev will spend six hours and 50 minutes in their extra-vehicular activity. Female cosmonaut Anna Kikina will render them support from aboard the orbital station. The cosmonauts are scheduled to open ISS hatches at 5:20 p.m. Moscow time on November 17, Petelin said.

NASA Plans Coverage of Roscosmos Spacewalks at Space Station

NASA will provide coverage as two Roscosmos cosmonauts conduct a series of spacewalks in November and December outside the International Space Station to prepare hardware on the Rassvet module for installation on the Nauka multipurpose laboratory module.

Watch live coverage of each spacewalk on NASA Television, the NASA app, and the agency’s website at:

https://www.nasa.gov/live

During the spacewalks, Expedition 68’s Sergey Prokopyev and Dmitri Petelin will venture outside of the Poisk module to oversee the transfer of a radiator, an airlock, and to make electrical and hydraulic connections. Inside the orbital complex, cosmonaut Anna Kikina will control the ESA (European Space Agency) European robotic arm on Nauka to move the radiator and the airlock into position for the spacewalkers.

The content and coverage times of the spacewalks are (all times EST):

Thursday, Nov. 17

9 a.m. – NASA TV coverage begins for spacewalk to prepare the radiator on Rassvet for the move to Nauka.

Friday, Nov. 25

6 a.m. – NASA TV coverage begins for spacewalk to move the radiator from Rassvet to Nauka using ESA’s robotic arm, and make electrical and hydraulic connections.

Tuesday, Dec. 6

2 a.m. – NASA TV coverage begins for spacewalk to move the Rassvet airlock from Rassvet to Nauka and install it using ESA’s robotic arm.

Thursday, Dec. 21

6:30 p.m. - NASA TV coverage begins to deploy newly relocated radiator on Nauka.

The spacewalk scheduled for Nov. 17 will be the third for Prokopyev, who will wear the Orlan spacesuit with the red stripes for all spacewalks. It will be the first spacewalk for Petelin, who will wear the spacesuit with the blue stripes.

Just noted thanks to the ISS EVA statistics posted after yesterday's US EVA 81 that tomorrow's will mark the most ever Russian EVAs from ISS in a calendar year (though not ever, as Mir had several years of 10 EVAs). If plans hold until the end of the year though, they will tie in with Mir's record.

Unfortunately, the DOUG file was never released publicly (my request to the PAO has been shuffled around for about 6 weeks now) so no written EVA steps.

The list of today’s tasks:
1. Installation of the ERA adapter on the airlock at the Rassvet module;
2. Venting of nitrogen conservation pressure and vacuuming of the radiator hydraulic circuits;
3. Dismantling of 6 fasteners of the radiator
4. Installation of the blocker at Strela-2;
5. Installation of the bulky cargo securing device on Nauka module.

Some debris (looked like a rectangular package or blanket), hand-sized, was ejected from the hatch, appeared to rebound against a Strela, and went forward towards Zarya.

EDIT: It has remained floating almost still in Poisk's front side, going slightly up from the camera's perspective.

First restraint now released and in the process of being unscrewed, after tying it to tethers. Very little effort reported as required for release (not a given after 11 years in space).

EDIT: And released. Has a long metal bar that probably is used to keep the folding radiator panels in place. Reporting the restraint looks brand new. On to the second one - and removed as well.

A (relative) good view of the SKKO (Sredstva Krepleniya Krupnogabaritnykh Obyektov).

The radiator goes on the other side of the module. The SKKO is primarily designed for attaching Earth Observation payloads such as radars, cameras, LIDAR, spectrometers and other experiments.

Thanks for the rectification russianhalo117  8)

Cosmonauts Finish Spacewalk for Work on Science Module
Mark Garcia
Posted on November 17, 2022

Expedition 68 Commander Sergey Prokopyev and Flight Engineer Dmitri Petelin, both of Roscosmos, concluded their spacewalk at 4:07 p.m. EST after 6 hours and 25 minutes.

Prokopyev and Petelin completed their major objective, preparing a radiator on the Rassvet module for installation on the Nauka multipurpose laboratory module.

This was the third spacewalk in Prokopyev’s career, and the first for Petelin. It was the tenth spacewalk at the station in 2022 and the 255th spacewalk for space station assembly, maintenance, and upgrades.
