ISS RS VKD-53 - April 28
« on: 04/23/2022 10:39 am »
Russian cosmonauts to spend over 6 hours during spacewalk on April 28.

During their spacewalk, the cosmonauts will continue the work to prepare the European Robotic Arm (ERA) for operation.

22 APR, 03:39

ISS, April 22. /TASS/. Russian cosmonauts working aboard the International Space Station (ISS) will embark on their second spacewalk as part of their current space mission on April 28 and spend more than six hours and a half during work outside the orbital outpost, TASS special reporter, cosmonaut Oleg Artemyev said on Friday.

The extravehicular activity for Artemyev and his teammate Denis Matveyev will begin at 17:25 Moscow time and last about 6 hours and 45 minutes. The program of the spacewalk will be specified and the time may be altered, Artemyev said.

During their spacewalk, the cosmonauts will continue the work to prepare the European Robotic Arm (ERA) for operation. Cosmonaut Sergey Korsakov who is also working aboard the International Space Station will provide his teammates support from the orbital outpost. In particular, he will operate the ERA manipulator.

Artemyev will conduct the fifth spacewalk in his career as a cosmonaut while Matveyev will carry out extravehicular activity for the second time. Before that, the cosmonauts made a spacewalk on April 18 to start preparing the ERA robotic arm for operation. Artemyev will work in Orlan-ISS Spacesuit No. 5 with red stripes while Matveyev will conduct extravehicular activity wearing Orlan-ISS Spacesuit No. 4 with blue stripes.

On November 17, 2021, Russia’s world-renowned TASS news agency and the State Space Corporation Roscosmos signed a memorandum of cooperation, under which a TASS news office was established aboard the ISS. Presently, cosmonaut Artemyev is heading the outer space-based branch. Cosmonaut Alexander Misurkin was the first TASS special reporter in space. His flight lasted 12 days.

2022, April 18 ... ISS EVA-52
Although numbered EVA-52, according to this NASA infograph this was the 60th EVA performed in Russian Orlan space suits  :o
Any idea how the counting really works ?
It looks like the April 28, 2022 spacewalk will be the " 250th spacewalk outside the International Space Station " ?!

Russian cosmonauts practice interaction before spacewalk to integrate robotic arm.

The training involved Oleg Artemyev and cosmonaut Sergey Korsakov who will operate the European Robotic Arm manipulator from the orbital outpost during the spacewalk.

25 APR, 05:54

ISS, April 25. /TASS/. Roscosmos cosmonauts trained at the weekend aboard the International Space Station (ISS) to practice interaction before a scheduled spacewalk to integrate the ERA robotic arm, TASS special correspondent, cosmonaut Oleg Artemyev reported on Monday.

The training involved Artemyev and cosmonaut Sergey Korsakov who will operate the ERA (European Robotic Arm) manipulator from the orbital outpost during the spacewalk.

Russian cosmonauts Artemyev and Denis Matveyev working aboard the International Space Station will embark on their second spacewalk as part of their current space mission on April 28 and spend more than six hours and a half during work outside the orbital outpost.

The extravehicular activity for Artemyev and his teammate Matveyev will begin at 17:25 Moscow time and last about 6 hours and 45 minutes. The program of the spacewalk will be specified and the time may be altered, Artemyev said earlier.

Artemyev will conduct the fifth spacewalk in his career as a cosmonaut while Matveyev will carry out extravehicular activity for the second time. Before that, the cosmonauts made a spacewalk on April 18 to start preparing the ERA robotic arm for operation. 6 of the Russian spacewalks (VKDs) to date have been "unscheduled/contingency" so these are given a suffix "a", "b", etc. (if two or more are done by the same Expedition crew). So far the dates of these have been:

3 Dec 2001 (a)
24 Jun 2004 (a)
30 Jun 2004 (b)
22 Feb 2007 (a)
10 Jul 2008 (a)
10 Mar 2009 (a)

Also two IVAs (referred to as внутри, vnutri, inside) on 8 June 2001 (19 minutes from the Zvezda Transfer Compartment) and on 19 June 2009 (replacing a flat cover with a conical cover on the upper docking port of SM Zvezda transfer compartment).

So not including these 8, equals 52 planned Russian VKDs. (The Cosmonaut Training Center has a page of all Russian VKDs, in Russian (Google English translation link); unscheduled is "Внеплановый", Vneplanovyi.) Roskosmos lists the 18 April 2022 VKD as the 60th Russian VKD, but the 52nd planned one.

Today, the second spacewalk of Oleg and Denis will take place, which will prepare ERA for work outside Nauka. And then I, as an operator, will control the “hand” with the help of the internal remote control, moving it to the base flight points.

7 of the Russian spacewalks (VKDs) to date have been "unscheduled/contingency" so these are given a suffix "a", "b", etc. So far the dates of these have been:

3 Dec 2001 - 4a
24 Jun 2004 - 9a
22 Feb 2007 - 17a
10 Jul 2008 - 20a
10 Mar 2009 - 21a
27 Jan 2014 - 37a
11 Dec 2018 - 45a

The first Russian spacewalk from the ISS was a 19-minute IVA from the Zvezda Transfer Compartment on 8 June 2001, so it may or not be counted (it is in the list above).

Less two intravehicular activity (not EVA, but IVA) :
8 jun 2001 - 19' by Oussatchev and James Voss
10 jun 2009 - 12' by Padalka and Barratt

NASA TV Broadcasting Fifth Spacewalk of the Year Today

Mark Garcia Posted on April 28, 2022

NASA Television coverage is underway as two Russian cosmonauts prepare to venture outside the International Space Station to continue activating the new European robotic arm – a 37-foot-long manipulator system mounted to the recently arrived Nauka module.

Expedition 67 Flight Engineers Oleg Artemyev and Denis Matveev of Roscosmos will conduct the second in a series spacewalk that will be staged out of the Poisk module airlock. During the spacewalk, the duo will monitor the first commanded movements of the robotic arm from its grapple fixtures after removing thermal blankets and launch locks. The arm’s end effectors will translate one at a time to a new base points. The crew also will install more handrails on Nauka.

Coverage of the spacewalk is on NASA Television, the NASA app, and agency’s website.

Artemyev will wear a Russian Orlan spacesuit with red stripes. Matveev will wear a spacesuit with blue stripes. This will be the fifth spacewalk in Artemyev’s career, and the second for Matveev. It will be the fifth spacewalk at the station in 2022 and the 250th spacewalk for space station assembly, maintenance, and upgrades.

During the first spacewalk on April 18, the cosmonauts installed and connected a control panel for the robotic arm. They also removed protective covers from the arm and installed handrails on Nauka. The arm will be used to move spacewalkers and payloads around the Russian segment of the station.

Amazing coverage, and outstanding result. Thank you so much for the screengrabs and running comentary for those who, like me, regrettably couldn't follow it live during a busy travel period.

After so many tribulations, ERA is almost fully operational in space. Many dismissed this as impossible for many years and were ready to write it off. The behavior of the Russian goverment lately has been abysmal, and Roscosmos leadership has destroyed decades of cooperation in a few short weeks, but not yet on ISS - it's heart-warming the professionals there have still managed to accomplish this feat.

Summarizing:

The VKD-53 EVA successfully completed:
- Removal of MLI blanket from the ERA wrists.
- Bundling and tie-wrapping of the MLI blanket.
- Retrograde disposal of MLI blanket bundle.
- Unlocking of launch hooks at EE-2
- Unlocking of EE-2 grappling mechanism (manual override was required after multiple failed attempts of regular unlocking)
- De-mounting of EE-2 from the launch grapple fixture
- Unlocking the EE-2 TRM
- Unlocking of Elbow joint launch hooks
- Unlocking of launch hooks at EE-1
- "Stand up" of ERA by rotating a single joint of the EE-1 wrist section.
- Closure of MLI flaps over the areas where ERA had interfaced with the launch hooks
- Installation of 3 EVA handrails on the "underside" of ERA.
- Walk-off by EE-2 towards base point 1.
- Grappling of base point 1 by EE-2
- Unlocking of EE-1 grappling mechanism
- Ungrappling EE-1 from launch base point
- Unlocking of EE-1 TRM
- Walk off by EE-1 towards base point 2.
- Grappling of base point 2 by EE-1.
- Lots of imagery by the two cosmonauts, particularly of the ERA electronics boxes and end effectors

Additional EVA task completed:
- Inspection, trouble shooting and successful re-deployment of a Kurs antenna on the Prichal module

ERA is now in a temporary stowage configuration, attached to base points 1 and 2. This is directly above 1 of the (now defunct) solar arrays of MLM Nauka. See image below.

The final planned task for the VKD-53 - walk off towards- and grappling by EE-2 of base point 3 - was not completed. This task amounts to ERA arriving at "home base" and is deferred to the next VKD.

Are they permanently shunted? I thought Nauka would be providing power to the RS after the required cables were routed a few months ago...

The EVA preparation video pointed out that the cosmonauts swapped the wrist watches from sides
April 18 EVA = 2 on left forearm while these sat during April 28 EVA on his right forearm of the red-striped Orlan MKS n°5 spacesuit...
Again cosmonaut Oleg Artemyev wore 3 wristwatches  8)

Temporarily defunct until the radiator is installed and activated.

Thank you for the follow up, I understand now. So they should be providing power as soon as the radiator is installed and activated later this year (late July or early August, as implied by the current scheduling of VKD-57), adding power to the RS (2x that generated currently by Zvezda? or even a bit more considering how old those arrays are...).

Even with the new Nauka arrays active, the RS will still be a net consumer of electrical power from USOS. Making RS power independent would require adding 3 more sets of Nauka arrays.

Is my conclusion correct that ERA now resides at base-point 2 and has it's not connected grapple fixture in front of base point 3. So after VKD-53, they continued moving ERA. By Grappling basepoint to with EE-1. And than moving EE-2 from basepoint 1 to base point 3.
They must have been confident in ERA to continue these movements with only internal or ground observation.
Is cosmonaut visual observation required for Grapping basepoint 3 with EE-2, or is there something wrong with this basepoint? Is that the step they plan to start with on VKD-54?

Edit: Thanks for your anser Anatoly Zak. (BTL-3 = Base point 3)
I'll share this image from a little earlier that shows ERA just after the VKD-53. (from cupola)

No further ERA work until BTL-3 grapple fixture device operating failure resolved which ended the previous spacewalk and troubleshooting continued afterwards.
Paywalled ERA Status Update: The European Robotic Arm hits a snag during activation

One troubleshooting task that may be added to VKD-54 is to manually drive the grappling mechanism and extend and engage the pover, data and video connectors on EVA using the special ERA tools which were also used to release the  launch locks and activate the arms. BTL-3 failed continuity checks during the aborted grapple attempts because the grapple fixture didn't function upon commanding.

Some people on the forum connected with ERA may be able to provide further details.

So EE-2 isn't functioning nominally. So they need to use the manual drive tools (a safety feature of ERA) to drive the EE-2 grapple fixture. This was the first use of ERA, so problems could be expected. Though unfortunate.
ESA's track record on launching trouble free hardware isn't very well: MAR-ES, Bartolomeo, to name a couple.
I'm sure they'll find a fix.

EE-2 is Good and functional. There is an ERA tool for manual engagement of the power and data connections. The connections and transfer of control to BTL-3 grapple base point is the issue because that is at fault. BTL-3 may have to be replaced with a yet to be installed BTL base point as is BTL-3 is what is suspect.

VKD-54 has been postponed to NET June 20, 2022. Strela is capable of performing all transfers and outfitting for all remaining Nauka EVA's which is the primary contingecy backup. The secondary contingency backup (to be used at last resort) is SSRMS/SPDM and in some EVA's would require OBSS to perform certain tasks.
