Seven spacewalks are planned for next Russian team onboard ISS.

The Soyuz-2.1a booster rocket with the Soyuz MS-21 spacecraft is scheduled to blast off at 18:55 Moscow time on March 18.

MOSCOW, March 18. /TASS/. Seven spacewalks are planned for the next Russian crew onboard the ISS, Oleg Artemyev, one of the crew members, said at a news conference hosted by TASS.

"There will be seven spacewalks. That’s the plan and we’ll be happy even if one takes place," he said. The other two crew members are Sergey Korsakov and Denis Matveyev.

Artemyev said one of the spacewalks will be joined by Italian astronaut Samantha Cristoforetti, and the rest will be along with Matveyev. All the three have the training required for spacewalks, but only Korsakov can handle the European Robotic Arm, a manipulator, Artemyev said.

The Soyuz-2.1a booster rocket with the Soyuz MS-21 spacecraft is scheduled to blast off at 18:55 Moscow time on March 18. It’s planned that Roscosmos cosmonauts Oleg Artemyev, who will become the second TASS special correspondent in space, Denis Matveyev and Sergey Korsakov, will take the flight to the ISS. The backup crew includes Sergey Prokopiev, Anna Kikina and Dmitry Petelin. The flight to the station will follow a two-turn pattern (lasting about three hours).

The crew members all graduated from Moscow’s Bauman State Technical University, and the third stage of the booster rocket will be emblazoned with the university’s coat of arms.

The Soyuz MS-21 spacecraft docked to the ISS in manual mode.

The Soyuz MS-21 spacecraft with three Russians docked to the ISS in manual mode.

22:19 03/18/2022 (updated: 22:46 03/18/2022)

KOROLEV (Moscow region), March 18 - RIA Novosti. The crew of the Soyuz MS-21 spacecraft has routinely docked with the International Space Station, a RIA Novosti correspondent reported from the Mission Control Center (MCC) near Moscow.

The docking took place in manual mode seven minutes later than planned. The reasons for this are yet to be established.

"At a distance of 180 meters, for some unknown reason, something with the Kurs economy (the rendezvous and docking system. - Ed.), We had to switch to manual mode," Vladimir Solovyov, Flight Director of the Russian Segment of the ISS.

He noted that the crew implemented the docking "quite successfully", although it was not easy, since it was the first docking to the "Prichal" module.

"Nevertheless, we have achieved the desired result," Solovyov added.

The rocket with the ship was launched from the Baikonur Cosmodrome at 18:55 Moscow time and a few minutes later put it into orbit. It is expected that after equalizing the pressure and carrying out preparatory operations, the crew will open the hatches and move to the station between 0:20 Moscow time and 0:40 Moscow time on March 19.

All three cosmonauts - Oleg Artemiev , Denis Matveev and Sergey Korsakov - graduates of the Bauman Moscow State Technical University . Artemyev arrived at the ISS for the third time, the rest were in space for the first time.

The ship that brought the crew to the station was named " Sergey Korolev " in honor of the 115th anniversary of the birth of the great Soviet designer, also a graduate of Baumanka.

At the station, the newly arrived cosmonauts will be met by Russians Anton Shkaplerov (station commander) and Pyotr Dubrov , Americans Mark Vande Hai, Raja Chari, Thomas Marshburn and Kayla Barron and German Matthias Maurer. The ISS crew will work in this composition until March 30, when Shkaplerov, Dubrov and Vande Hai will return to Earth on Soyuz MS-19.

Manual Soyuz MS-21 docking was due to Kurs system issue, cause unknown yet.

During the space mission the crew is to conduct more than 50 experiments in space biology and physiology, materials processing, cosmic ray physics and other fields.

18 MAR, 13:18

KOROLEV /Moscow Region/, March 18. /TASS/. The Soyuz MS-21 spacecraft’s manual docking with the Pirs module of the International Space Station was required due to a yet unknown issue with the Kurs automated docking system, the head of the Russian segment of the ISS, Vladimir Solovyev, told reporters on Friday.

"At a distance of about 180 meters <…> something happened to the Kurs system for reasons that are yet unknown, and the manual mode had to be used," he said.

A Soyuz-2.1a space rocket carrying the S.P. Korolyov spacecraft (Soyuz MS-21) with a crew of three - Oleg Artemiev, Denis Matveyev and Sergey Korsakov - blasted off from the Baikonur space center at 18:55 on Friday. The spacecraft was named after renowned Soviet spacecraft designer, founder of crewed space programs Sergey Korolyov.

During the space mission the crew is to conduct more than 50 experiments in space biology and physiology, materials processing, cosmic ray physics and other fields. As Artemiev said, there will be seven spacewalks. One will be in cooperation with Italian astronaut Samantha Christoforetti, and all others with Denis Matveyev. On March 19, Artemiev will get down to work in his other capacity - that of a TASS special correspondent in space.
