Today is the birthday of cosmonaut Sergei Kud-Sverchkov

08/23/2021 01:30

Sergei Kud-Sverchkov was born in Leninsk (now Baikonur), graduated from school in Korolev, studied at the Moscow State Technical University named after N.E. Bauman with a degree in Rocket Engines. But, despite the fact that literally from an early age he was introduced to the topic of space, he did not dream of conquering the vastness of the Universe in childhood and adolescence.

The desire to become an astronaut appeared in the last years of the university, from which Sergei graduated with honors. As a student, he underwent an internship at the Rocket and Space Corporation Energia named after S.P. Korolev (part of the Roscosmos State Corporation), where he was later hired as an engineer. This was an important step towards the cherished goal.

On April 26, 2010, by the decision of the State Interdepartmental Commission, Sergei Kud-Sverchkov was recommended for admission to the Energia cosmonaut corps (17th set), in 2012 he completed general space training and received the qualification of a test cosmonaut. From August 2012 to October 2019, he was preparing for a flight as part of the specialization and improvement group under the ISS program, then as a flight engineer for the backup and subsequently the ISS-64 prime crew.

Sergey Kud-Sverchkov set off for space flight on October 14, 2020 on the Soyuz MS-17 spacecraft together with Sergey Ryzhikov (ISS-64 crew commander) and NASA astronaut Kathleen Rubins. On November 18, 2020 he made a spacewalk that lasted almost seven hours, together with Sergei Ryzhikov. On April 17, 2021, the crew returned safely to Earth. The flight duration was 185 days.

The management and staff of the Roscosmos State Corporation, the Cosmonaut Training Center, colleagues in the Roscosmos Cosmonaut Corps congratulate Sergei Kud-Sverchkov on his birthday and wish him health, happiness, prosperity, and conquering new heights!

#OTD five years ago, NASA astronaut Kate Rubins became the first person to sequence DNA in space. Since then researchers have used sequencing as a tool for further advancing space biology research and preparing us for missions farther into deep space.

Uchu no Tane 2021 By the way, the seeds distributed this time were launched from the ground and traveled in space for this educational project. The seed is the same variety of "sweet basil" that Astronaut Noguchi raised. #Would you like to compare how you grow up with today's basil ?

On October 12, 1492, one of the significant geographical discoveries took place. During his maiden voyage in search of a way to India, Christopher Columbus discovered a new land. On October 13, his ship landed on the shores of one of the Bahamas, thus rediscovering the New World.

On October 13, 1884, the Greenwich meridian was recommended as the starting point of reference. In addition, later, Greenwich time became the basis for determining the universal time and counting time zones.

It seemed like it was yesterday, but a whole year has flown by! Early that day, October 14, early in the morning, the crew took their places in the # SoyuzMS17 spacecraft and after 3h 03m docked with the ISS. I am often asked how it feels when a rocket takes off from the ground. Fear? No. Excitement? Yes and no.
