Well that was very smooth. Thanks for the help with the coverage, Nick, Steven and our Japanese friends who provide a lot of help on here.

We'll keep this thread going for the interim, before a new thread for HTV's arrival at the ISS.

nice launch..

but... how annoying is that it turns out they *have* a rocket cam, but only bother to show it for five seconds when the SRBs separate? with three minutes of a tiny white dot in a big blue sky?

sigh.

And a rebump from page six of Chris Gebhardt's article, as it covers a lot of what the HTV-2 has to come on orbit.

Great launch! I have ISS visible for the next 6 days. Hope to see ISS and HTV-2 closing the gap on one those mornings.

Congratulations, good job JAXA. Great launch and what a remarkable launch vehicle. The limited viewing from the on-board camera was a shame though.

Launch Result of H-IIB Launch Vehicle No. 2 with KOUNOTORI2 (HTV2) Onboard

The Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency (JAXA) launched the H-IIB Launch Vehicle
No.2 (H-IIB F2) with the KOUNOTORI2 (HTV2, a cargo transfer vehicle to the
International Space Station) onboard at 2:37:57 p.m. on January 22 (Sat.,)
2011 (Japan Standard Time, JST) from the Tanegashima Space Center.
The launch vehicle flew smoothly, and, at about 15 minutes and 13 seconds after
liftoff, the separation of the KOUNOTORI2 was confirmed.
We would like to express our profound appreciation for the cooperation and
support of all related personnel and organizations that helped contribute to
the successful launch of the H-IIB F2.
At the time of the launch, the weather was clear, a wind speed was 8.3 meters/
second from the north-west and the temperature was 10.6 degrees Celsius.
