I hope this was an astronaut thing, rather than a PAO thing as they looked a bit silly in some of those photos.

Great pictures !

S82-41355 (December 1982) --- The four crewmembers for NASA's STS-6 mission go through a training exercise in the full-scale engineering mockup in the Shuttle mockup and integration laboratory at the Johnson Space Center (JSC). Their seating configuration reflects that of launch and landing phases aboard the Space Shuttle Challenger. The front stations are occupied by Astronauts Paul J. Weitz (left), commander, and Karol J. Bobko, pilot. In the rear seats are astronauts Story Musgrave and Donald H. Peterson, both mission specialists. STS-6 will be the Challenger's first flight when it takes this crew and a tracking and data relay satellite (TDRS) into Earth orbit the early part of next year.

Yes the picture is on other place on the internet, but not in this resolution :)

The photo behind that crew of STS-62A ... is that an enclosure that goes around the shuttle @ the pad?  Why have I never seen this before... Any other photos or links to information about this?  I guess I'm showing my limits of Shuttle knowledge but hey... gotta ask or I'll never know ;)

The STS-62-A crew would have been the first crew to launch from Vandenberg Air Force Base in California. That is where the photo is taken. It is Space Launch Complex 6, which is the California pad the Shuttle would have launched from. Enterprise actually spent several months on that pad as part of compatibality checks between the shuttle vehicle and launch pad. I hope this clarifies things for you a bit. ;)

There were two Alternate Payload Specialists (APSes), in case either of the two PSes on 51F (Acton and Bartoe) was unfit to fly. I forget their names.

LOL- these are great!  Humorous and historic.
Dick Truly's cat (if it is his cat; maybe they just found it behind the building) looks really unhappy about the whole deal on the STS-8 shot.
The Santas in sunglasses for 32 look more like ZZ Top. :)

Now that is a scream!  Curbeam looks quite tough, and so does Marsha Ivins. Kind of reminds of the female lead in "The Matrix" (can't think of her name).
Thanks for sharing - great stuff!

Great images. Pretty sad on the cancelled flights because of Challenger.

In the end though, just about all of those crews and non-commercial missions flew. The only one who still is waiting for that first post-51L ride is Anna Fisher, who is still listed as an active astronaut but has gone 11 years without an assignment since her return.

Hopefully she gets one before the end of STS, although I think I've got a better chance of winning the lottery than that happening given the long list of rookies still to be flown.

Anna Fisher really deserves to fly soon if she is still an active astronaut and is still willing to fly.

At last, proof that NASA is not just some faceless humourless monolith, but is peopled by people with a great sense of fun and humour, who can revert to total professionalism when needed. It reminds me of STS116 when Christer Fuselgang was counting in all sorts of languages whilst shaking the P6 SAW. Fun loving people doing a job I can only dream of. I especially like the early mission photo where they all have their helmets on!!

Just out of interest, the little shuttle models they sometimes have in the picture. When they use them, are they the same name as the orbiter they're flying on or is it just a generic model?

STS-44  (Who is the real Story  :)  )

Interesting story behind this one.  They wanted to wear Halloween masks but the management told them 'no.'  So they went with the skinhead covers and aviators instead.  They also all had 'Story Musgrave' nametags.  Now, I believe it was the STS-54 practice countdown when John Casper had his own idea for a fun-filled walkout.  They all got ahold of those special baseball caps with the ponytails attached and wore them as they walked out to the Astrovan.  All was well and good as they faced the crowd, but when they made the turn to the van, surprise! ;)

These pictures depict STS-61B with and without Walker and Neri, who we know they did flew. Were those two added later in the mission after the "without" pictures or just because being mission specialists were not included in some pictures even with the modified emblem?

Payload Specialists were sometimes added to the crews late only 2-3 months before launch; after the original crew photos were taken.

Ah, yes, good old Guenter Wendt - called the "pad leader." They had a lot of fun in the white room area at the time. But sometimes astronaut humor tested the limits of good taste - the swastika on the "Col. Guenter Klink" helmet during Apollo 14 launch preparations went a bit far "and caused some ruffled feathers at HQ," as Wendt describes in "The Unbroken Chain."

The "old geezer" stick (Lunar Explorer Support Equipment) presented to Al Shepard in return certainly was much funnier.

I laughed myself silly when I saw these at JSC in the Shuttle Training Facility (from the tour hallway upstairs)...

These are rocket scientists... do they REALLY need graphic representations and warnings not to sit on the ends of folding tables, complete with stick figures going @ss over teakettle??

The last one was down next to the shuttle cockpit trainers... funny, but I usually evacuate my bladder in the men's room... LOL:)  (seriously, I know it's for deflating Mae Wests or something, but it's still funny how it's worded).

I especially like the scene illustrated in the screen cap for the video above.  You have to listen carefully, but when the alien walks up to Aldrin, Buzz says "You're not mankind!" and slugs him!

Well, as far as being slugged by Aldrin, I guess you could make a case for Bart Sibrel not being mankind, either... :D

When the InfraRed Astronomical Satellite was transported from the Netherlands to USA in 1981, someone issued a pen-drawn design for a sticker to be slapped on the transport container. The sticker never became reality, but the design was re-discovered in the archives several years ago.

Now I totally get why all the space junk is floating around Gemini VII; because Frank Borman and Jim Lovell planned to stay in space for 14 days, which is longer than a typical 3-4 day Gemini mission.

So, this cartoon made fun of the longer duration by giving Borman and Lovell unshaven faces and the space junk floating around the spacecraft.
