I had the privilege to attend a lecture by Gene Cernan a few years ago here in Berlin.
He was more than inspiring -  in my opinion mankind lost an outstanding representative.

Farewell "Geno"... Thank you for you service and for being such a strong advocate for returning to the Moon. I hope it won't be too much longer before the next person sets foot upon the surface and fulfills you wish...

Really taken aback by that sad news of Eugene .

Condolence to his family, friends and spaceflight enthusiasts like ourselves who will miss him greatly.

He was a great ambassador for human spaceflight exploration.

I' ll treasure the memories of meeting him in person, watching live the three lunar spacewalks he undertook with Harrisson at Taurus Littrow and the several signed Apollo items by him I have .

I came within an arm's length of meeting him at the Apollo-Saturn V center dedication in 1996, but he was quickly surrounded by reporters.  Gene Cernan was a great ambassador for space exploration.
Launches attended:  Apollo 11, ASTP (@KSC, not Baikonur!), STS-41G, STS-125, EFT-1, Starlink G4-24, Artemis 1
Notable Spacecraft Observed:  Echo 1, Skylab/S-II, Salyuts 6&7, Mir Core/Complete, HST, ISS Zarya/Present, Columbia, Challenger, Discovery, Atlantis, Dragon Demo-2, Starlink G4-14 (8 hrs. post-launch), Tiangong

Half of the men who walked the Moon are now gone. And a couple of them are not in great health. I think the U.S. should have medical teams outside their homes on permanent standby! Not to mention Stafford, Borman, Lovell and the other great men who got to orbit Luna... :(

Apollo slips one more step out of living memory.
Time to go back and finish the job.

Very saddened by this. I really hope we return to the moon soon before all the remaining Apollo astronaut's leave us. I'm really at a loss for words.

Welcome to the forum. I wished it was under better circumstances, but I'm glad you got to see and hear him speak in person.

Oh no! This is a real blow to the guts! Now the first and the last are gone, and Pete and the others...
Truly hope we manage to get back before the last Apollo austronaut dies, it seems such a waste that we have squandered all these years...
I'll take my signed copy of Last Man out tonight and re-read it.

Godspeed Gene!

I miss Gene already.  I thought of him as the counterpart to Neil, and if there were to be a return to the Moon it'd feel fitting to return to Apollo 17's site.  I felt sorrow the minute I saw his name scroll across CNN earlier today.

Here's a statement from Buzz Aldrin about the great Gene Cernan, RIP.

Quote
Today we lost yet another hero. Gene Cernan and I met for the first time when we were selected for the third group of astronauts in November of 1963. We started our training together in January of 1964 and eventually worked together as the backup crew of Gemini 9. He was a Navy guy and I was Air Force so there was always a friendly dose of ribbing and trying to one up each other that continued to this day.   We had the very interesting task of training together on the maneuvering unit  – a jet pack like George Clooney used in the movie “Gravity”, which was a fascinating project and was quite complicated. Unfortunately, NASA felt it was too risky so we weren’t able to use it during our Gemini missions.

I left NASA before Gene’s mission to the Moon on Apollo 17 but of course followed it closely with the rest of the world. He served the nation extremely well on his mission with Ron Evans and the first scientist astronaut, Jack Schmitt. It was the final mission to the Moon but our hopes had been that we would press forward and eventually be on Mars as the next destination. Unfortunately, that hasn’t happened and Gene is the last person to step foot on another celestial body. He was the last man on the moon and he wasn’t happy about that and continually stressed that he didn’t want to be the last.

Gene was probably the strongest spokesman for astronauts for lunar travel and advocating a return to the moon. He made multiple trips to Washington to give testimony along with Neil Armstrong and Jim Lovell to promote NASA and not losing our pioneering spirit. He wasn’t really a Mars guy like me, but he cared deeply about continuing manned space exploration.

Us astronauts will always remember his cheerful and smiling approach to everything. With the passing of the First Man – Neil Armstrong, and the passing of the Last Man – Gene Cernan, it is up to us Middle Men to carry on spirit of Apollo into the future for our Nation and the world.
