Author Topic: Camcorder video on board Endeavour through the sparks and plasma of re-entry  (Read 59006 times)

Online Chris Bergin

A short lower res and edited "trailer" of the 90 minute/400 meg video on L2 http://www.nasaspaceflight.com/L2/ (From Payload Bay door closure to post landing checks).

STS-88, one of the most spectacular re-entry videos, as you can hear from the veteran crew speaking on the video - with Endeavour after the first Shuttle mission to the ISS with Node 1.

Crew: Robert D. Cabana, Mission Commander on his fourth mission.
Frederick W. Sturckow, Pilot on his first mission
Nancy J. Currie, Mission Specialist, who you hear a lot, on her third mission.
Jerry L. Ross, Mission Specialist on his sixth mission.
James H. Newman, Ph.D, Mission Specialist on his third mission
Russian Sergei K. Krikalev, Mission Specialist on his fourth mission.

Fouth full length re-entry video on L2, the other trailer video being Atlantis on 115: http://forum.nasaspaceflight.com/forums/thread-view.asp?tid=4813&start=1

We had to place a watermark on this trailer (not the L2 version) due to the usual youtube leeches who then claim it as their own find.

I've got L2, and I have to say... This almost tops the STS-115 (Atlantis) one.  Loved PLB Door closing, too!  They seem to close faster than they open (from what I have seen on PLB Door opening).  Great shots, and I just love the way they talk.  So calm!

Chris, I didn't think Nancy was so bad.. Not the most quiet one, but not that bad.

Man that's  quite a nice clip selection edited  for a trailer there.  Never have seen a re-entry video with the brief showers of sparks  flying backward such as at 1:56 and 2:50 or so into the trailer.

All the full videos are awesome, but this competes as one of the best for sure.

Wow, thanks for the trailer. I liked the Commander asking how everyone was and the jokes :) Makes them seem like the humans they are and not robots.

What is causing all the sparks?

The conversations with the crew make these videos, even though the visuals are stunning. Amazed how calm they are and some of the joking is quality.

What is causing all the sparks?

Particles in the upper atmosphere, being caught by the bow wave and interacting with re-entering orbiter, and riding over the body of the craft. Very rare to see, probably the first time on video anywhere. Stunning.

Did I hear it right that this is the first flight of Endeavour with the new glass cockpit, meaning the green screen type monitors seen on this video were still onboard her up to this point?

Yes, in fact this re-entry was flown in December, 1998 -- almost nine years ago.  At that point only Atlantis had the MEDS upgrade and had not flown with it yet.  (It was just coming out of an OMDP at Palmdale.)

No, but they weren't off nominal.

If it's a trailer, and not an L2 version, AND they accredit the site and provide a URL to NSF, is that *really* so bad?

hi. Thank you for such an awesome site. Does anyone know what the sparks are officially? If there a link to a document explaining? I want to use this as a school project because the Space Shuttle is the most amazing thing in the world! Is there a version without the writing on the video, I promise I won't put it on youtube.

Join L2 as the full video on there is not watermarked. It's about 2hrs long and there's several of them.
