ODS aluminium alloys
« on: 05/28/2024 04:49 am »
New ODS aluminum alloy out of china with novel magnesium oxide nanoparticle dispersion that can do 200MPa tensile at 500C.

NASA has poked around with ODS alloys before, but this appears to be a first for aluminum. The paper authors also think their powder bed metallurgy method is transferable to other metals like titanium or zirconium to make an ODS alloy version too.

In fact Sintered Aluminum Powder (SAP) using alumina (Al2O3) has been around since the late 50's and when it is reported at all it's usually described as being able to sustain 400c at about 15% Alumina. The skin on the Shuttle was rated to run no higher than 183c (the melting point of lead/tin solder  :( )

You might call it "fall out" from trying to raise the operating temperature of nuclear fuel cladding (the Russians really did go with Mg allowed with Be 5-15% :o ) without going to full-on Be or Zircaloy, since both Al and Mg were relatively cheap options (and still are, especially compared to Be, flagged as about 200x more expensive than high performance aerospace aluminum alloys).

Had it become available earlier it might have been what Kelly Johnson would have chosen to build the SR71 out of. Everything else with anywhere near "high temperature" strength is much heavier.

For anyone wondering, ODS stands for Oxide Dispersion Strengthened.

Quite true. Although it's not clear from the name sintered aluminum powder used a significant portion of alumina to improve its creep and strength properties. Arguably the first generation ODS alloy, although its origin in nuclear fuel cladding would also suggest they'd try to limit alloying elements to the minimum with low neutron absorbing elements.

SAP has been around for a long time.

A wander through the IAEA's nuclear information database will show several thousand reports. I've attached one from 1961.

Note the stuff shown is essentially pure aluminum with some oxygen. Not an actual alloy like the 2xxx, 6xxx or 7xxx series.

One point they make is that the best source for the aluminum is not powder, it's fragmenting Al foil.
