I happened to find this book about the Chinese space program at the following links:
https://link.springer.com/book/10.1007/978-3-030-19588-5
https://www.amazon.com/China-Space-Forward-Springer-Praxis/dp/3030195872

This published work is at the moment the most comprehensive book about the Chinese space program, although several aspects of China's space development, especially in the development of military spacecraft, are cloaked in secrecy. One chapter of this book, "Medieval rockets to first satellites", encapsulates China's role in medieval history as the nation that built the first rockets thanks to gunpowder, the role of Qian Xuesen in cultivating China's interest in space rocketry during the 1930s and 1940s, but also the beginnings of the Chinese space program in the 1960s and early 1970s.
