Russia Loses Space Parachute Again

You'd think they could stick a GPS and a beacon on there or something...
Just kidding. The fact that they can't find it probably means that the experimental TPS failed and the craft did not survive reentry. No guts no glory.

I wish they would mention how far along the trajectory they got telemetry. Yet another submarine-launched booster failure can't be ruled out without that.
That is mighty rough country to try to find something that isn't beeping back to you!

Here's the latest news from the Lavochkin(sp?) center itself ( warning: babelfish translation
) (original in Russian at
http://www.laspace.ru/rus/news.php#048
) It seems the got a bunch of telemtery before, and *after* (edit: although! only 25 seconds -- that's kinda short for a re-entry vehicle after 100km) the re-entry, but the ground search beacon crapped out and they're still looking for it? It does mention some 'video..." something or other, would they have any record I wonder.

10.10.2005 Testing "demonstrator D -2r" the descent vehicle "demonstrator D -2r" was neglected on 07 October, 2005, from the submarine "borisoglebsk" from the water area of Barents sea into 01:30 (time Moscow). This international project is developed within the framework of the contract between the European space agency and the European company Eads- st and of the partner agreement between Eads- st and NPO im. S.A. Of lavochkina, which was concluded with the assistance of international scientific and technical center. By the task of project was the demonstration of the possibility of delivery cargo from space. Pneumatic braking device (NTU) was created by specialists NPO im. S.A.Lavochkina. Braking device, by mass about 140 kg, is made from two pneumatic cascades. The first (basic) cascade consists of six tori, cross-linked from the special cloth, and external conical shell, to which is substituted flexible heat shielding. It serves for a decrease in the velocity, with which the descent vehicle enters into the atmosphere (about 7000 m/s) to the subsonic (50-70 m/s).
The second (additional) cascade serves for reduction in the speed of apparatus to the allowable speed of landing. Pneumatic braking device has a number of advantages over other constructions for the descent in the atmosphere - it is compact in the transport position, has relatively small a mass and cost. According to the data OF GRTS "KB im. the academician OF V.P. Of makeyeva" the start RN "wave" passed in the normal mode and separation of "demonstrator D -2r" from RN was provide ford with the parameters, close to the calculated. According to the results of the rapid analysis of the telemetry, obtained from the board KA, it is possible to assert that occurred separation of "demonstrator D -2r" from RN "wave".
The process of its twist, which ensures stability of motion of apparatus with respect to the trajectory, is executed and were included the systems of satellite navigation, videoregistratsii and autonomous radiotelemetry system. Began the direct drive of telemetry and its reception on the range hen in Kamchatka. In the time determined by flight program occurred razrifovka and filling of basic pneumatic pneumatic device, apparatus acquired the nominal form (H = of 238 km, T = of 356 s). At the height of 100 km of "demonstrator D -2r" it entered into the Earth's atmosphere.
Since the layer of plasma is formed with the atmospheric entry in the specific section of motion before the frontal surface of the descent vehicle, connection with the ground-based points at this time was absent. After the passage of this trajectory phase the reception of telemetry data was renewed and continued about 25 seconds. At present continues the search for "demonstrator D -2r" on the range in Kamchatka and more detailed processing of the obtained telemetry data. Leader of the project Of aleksashkin Sergey Nikolayevich

Got through, then. Something got damaged or malfed -- radio, power, chute.

"...or malfed -- radio, power, chute..."
But something new from the translation above: It looks like there is no chute! The "second cascade" slows it to landing speed. Now that is neat!

Wow, missed that. I see a picture of Indiana Jones bailing out of a trimotor using an inflatable liferaft...
