During the mid-late 1980s, while the Buran space shuttle was undergoing development, the People's Republic of China came out with manned spaceplane designs of its own, including both STS/Buran-like spaceplanes and a horizontal takeoff and landing spaceplane. The Tianjiao 1 spaceplane was a spaceplane designed to be launched in orbit from an existing Long March rocket with strap-on boosters, and it would have been comparable to the Hermes and X-20 Dynasoar in size. On the other hand, the Changcheng 1 and V-2 would have had jettisonable boosters and fuel tanks like those of the Space Shuttle, and the V-2 even had provisions for using a reusable first stage. The H-2 was similar in concept to the Sanger II, as the first stage of this design would have attained hypersonic speed with both scramjet and rocket propulsion, while the spaceplane would have been released at suborbital altitude from the first stage and reached orbit with four rocket engines.
