A change of launch vehicle compared with Bion-M 1.

Do we know if this launch is scheduled for Baikonur or not?

As far as I understand Bion-M № 1 was also to have gone up on a Soyuz-2-1B. Both the tender for the delivery of the rocket, and the launch campaign specify 1B. Rocket № 009 was delivered to Baikonur in December 2012 for that mission. In February 2013 Bion-M № 1 was delivered to Baikonur along with a Soyuz-2-1A. Rocket № 009 sat in Baikonur until last December when it was used to launch Resurs-P № 2.

Just quickly scanning this and the orbit for Bion-M 2 is planned to be higher than for Bion-M 1: 800-1,000 km: and the inclination could be either 51.8 deg (never used in the Bion programme before) or 65 deg.   Satellite mass ~6,400 kg.

Can Soyuz-2 put 6400 kg in a 1000 km orbit at 65 degrees?

Can the Bion-M engine de-orbit from that altitude?

The interlocutor of RIA Novosti noted that the alteration of the Bion-M biosatellite number 2 for the tasks of the Kovcheg project is technically feasible and has been confirmed to Roscosmos by the spacecraft developer, the Progress Rocket and Space Center.

"It is proposed to launch the apparatus on the new Soyuz-5 carrier rocket as part of its flight tests," the source said. Earlier it was reported that the first launch of the Soyuz-5 rocket as part of flight tests is planned for the end of 2023. In total, within the framework of the tests, it is planned to carry out three launches until 2025 inclusive.

Oleg Orlov: scientists want to conduct long-term missions to the ROS

<snip>
When will the Bion-M satellite No. 2 be launched? When is it possible to launch "Bion-M" No. 3 for biomedical indication of a high-latitude orbit?

- The launch of the biosatellite "BION-M" No. 2, most likely, will take place in 24. Regarding "BIONA-M" No. 3, we assume the possibility of its launch in 2027-2028, subject to the start of work in 2023. So far, there has been no response to our proposal.

Bion-M №2 with mice and various other living beings will be launched on August 20th, in just under 2 weeks from now.

The spacecraft will be launched from Baikonur on a Soyuz-2.1b rocket into 97° 300-370km orbit, which is the planned orbit for the future Russian Orbital Station.

https://vedomostiural.ru/news/oblomki-rakety-soyuz-2-1b-mogut-upast-v-rayone-karpinska-v-sv/

From 18 to 22 August 2025 in the Sverdlovsk region is expected to fall the wreckage of the Soyuz-2-1b missile. In this regard, local authorities issued an official warning for residents of Karpinsk and nearby settlements, urging to be careful and avoid dangerous areas.

According to the regional emergency department, potentially dangerous territories are located within a radius of several tens of kilometers from settlements. In particular, the risk zones include:

• area 20 kilometers north of the village of Kytlym;

• an area 10-12 kilometers north-west of the village of Kakvinsky Pechi;

• the area 17 kilometers west of the village of Sosnovka;

• a plot in 4-5 kilometers south of the reserve "Moneyzhkin Stone";

• district 2-3 kilometers north of the Konzhakovsky mountain range.

During the fall of the rocket stages, residents can observe a bright glow in the sky and hear a loud thunder, which can cause anxiety and panic.

Residents are encouraged to refrain from visiting these territories from 18 to 22 August and closely monitor official messages.

According to experts, the fall of the wreckage is a common occurrence when launching missiles, but in this case it is important to observe precautions to avoid accidents.

On Wednesday, August 20, at 20:13:10 Moscow time, a unique scientific mission is to be launched from the Baikonur Cosmodrome - the Bion-M No. 2 spacecraft. This is a real biological laboratory for studying life in space. Roscosmos, together with the Institute of Medical and Biological Problems of the Russian Academy of Sciences, is sending an unusual team into orbit: 75 mice, one and a half thousand fruit flies, microorganisms, plant seeds, including tomatoes, mushrooms and ants.

On Tuesday, the Soyuz rocket with the Bion-M No. 2 biological satellite will be rolled out. Usually, the rocket is rolled out a few days before the launch - specialists are making final preparations at the launch complex, Roscosmos said.

But what is special about the Bion launch? No more than 72 hours should pass from the moment the spacecraft is closed by the fairing flaps to the "Ascent Contact". This is due to the preservation of biological samples that are on board. The task is to get into zero gravity as quickly as possible. This is important for the "tailed", "flying" and "green" passengers of the biosatellite.

The "Bion-M" program No. 2 includes more than 30 experiments. Scientists from the Institute of Medical and Biological Problems are conducting one of the experiments together with Russian and Belarusian schoolchildren: the children are sending tomato seeds into space. The experiment is called "Into Space with Your Tomato".

"Rossiyskaya Gazeta" and the publishing house "Belarus Today", on whose platform the newspaper "SOYUZ" is published, have become the unifying platform for this unique scientific research.

There seems some confusion about the orbit. Most sources mentioned it to be 800-1000 km. A few say 370-380 km. Why that difference in some sources?

370 km orbit with an inclination of 97°, according to the head of the Institute of Biomedical Problems in an interview published yesterday.
https://news.rambler.ru/tech/55164479-akademik-oleg-orlov-analoga-programme-bion-v-mire-v-nastoyaschiy-moment-net/

Announced stage impact zones are the same as those for Resurs-P4 and P5, which also use this inclination. They want to mimic the orbit of the new Russian space station in order to study radiation effects on living organisms.

Unless something has escaped my attention, this will be the first Russian re-entry and landing from an orbit with such a high inclination. The current Russian record stands at 81/82° (recoverable reconnaissance satellites).

Offline ralfvandebergh

Russianspaceweb also now mentions the lower 300 km type orbit: https://www.russianspaceweb.com/bion-m2.html:

'As of 2025, the Bion-M2 mission was planned for 30 days in a 300 by 370-kilometer orbit with an inclination 97 degrees toward the Equator, which was expected to be similar to the orbital parameters of the Russian Orbital Station, ROS, where the orbital base would experience up to 30 percent a harsher radiation environment than that present in lower-latitude orbits.'

As far as I understand, the planned orbit was revised in 2022. Before this, it was 800x800/51.6°. Hence the confusion (even in Wikipedia, some media outlets probably get their data from there).

From Roscosmos Telegram...

The descent module of the Bion-M No. 2 biological satellite has landed.

The spacecraft was launched from Baikonur on August 20th; 30 days later, it returned to Earth with living organisms on board.

▶️ After landing, they will be sent to Moscow for further research.

Do we know how many of the mice and other animals survived the re-entry?

If I am not mistaken, in Bion-M-1 many mice died while the capsule was still in orbit.

We do.

IMBP-RAN now reports that only 10 mice has died this time.

"The results: out of 75 mice, ten were missing. We are all satisfied with this result, especially the scientists and the flight organizers. The cause of death for these animals varies. These were male mice, aggressive animals with complex intragroup conflicts. The data, of course, hasn't been lost; we will learn at what stages and for what reason they died."

Using the final not-obviously-spurious TLE set, I get a landing near 0700 UTC, not 0800 UTC as implied by Roskosmos. Is it possible there's a time zone error by them?
