This is something the Orbiters could do with, but is obviously too late to install.

I wouldn't be too surprised to see the money spent anyway, if it is politically correct.  Make the fleet safer then retire the vehicles.

I have seen many instances of millions spent to upgrade a military facility only to see the facility closed within a very short time of completion of upgrades.  Wasted money, yes, but politicians seem to get a better grade if they spend money within their districts...wisely spent doesn't seem to go into the equation.

Hmmm yes, what is the price on crew survival. There is no price, if it's available, do it.

I agree 100%, so any price, is that only $$$ or is added mass to a launch vehicle too high a price?

More smart people working to add to humanity's spacefaring bag of tricks.

Ties in nicely with the space junk news and MXER vulnerability in that regime.  I predict that some form of protection like this will become the norm in ten years, like self-sealing fuel tanks in combat aircraft.
