Question on the CSM block 1 display
« on: 01/09/2023 09:50 pm »
Hi everyone,

I'm currently studying some pictures of the CM-011 test flight, which is a block 1 CM, and there are several indicators that remain a complete mystery to me.
Although there are plenty of documentation on the display of Block 2 CSMs or even on the Apollo 4 Block 1 CSM, I can find very limited information on the details of the CM-011 display.

For instance, here are some of the switches I have a hard time understanding:

Those switches in the yellow circles are all different than those at the same position in Block 2 or Apollo 4 displays, the number of lines/characters written on them do not match. The others look to be similar though.

The only document I have which explains those switches is the AS-202 Post launch report, and here is the quality of my scan:

It is of little help...

If anyone has any idea about what those buttons are, your help would be much appreciated.

Thanks !  ;D

I'm sure of all the ones that are not encircled, as they are similar to the later versions of the CM or easy to figure out (in bold below). I don't know only the yellow ones.

1) Liftoff / No auto abort
2) ?? (help). On later versions, it will become "LES motor fire". Looks like "He DUMP" to me.
3) Canard Deploy
4) ?? (help). On later versions, it is "CSM/LV SEP" but not here. Looks like "LES motor fire" to me.
5) ?? (help). On later versions, it is "Apex Cover Jett" but not here. Looks like "AOPI or AOFI or AOFT or .... SEP" to me.
6) Apex Cover Jett. On later versions, it will become "Drogue Deploy".
7) Drogue Deploy. On later versions, it will become "Main Deploy".
8 ) Main Deploy. On later versions, it will become "CM RCS He DUMP".

Here is a cleaned and zoomed-in version of the button n°5:
