Up to now, we've had had people ask for viewing locations for each CCSFS/KSC launch, but since a lot of the info is the same each time, we're going to start a general viewing thread for viewing of CCSFS/KSC launches.

Viewing locations for starters: Rocket Launch Viewing Guide for Cape Canaveral
If you are looking for VAFB launch viewing info please consult: SpaceX Falcon 9 - Vandenberg - Launch Viewing
If you are looking for Boca Chica, TX launch viewing info please consult: SpaceX Super Heavy/Starship - Boca Chica, TX - Launch Viewing

I had the chance to get out to the Saturn V viewing area for the CRS-13 launch and had a great time with the large screen showing the SPACEX stream and the expert live commentary at the site before the stream started.

Something the article linked above does not cover well is the trick to see  the full landing from the Saturn V viewing area.

Section "C" gave me a great view of the landing zone between the large buildings around the VAB and was not blocked out by the trees that block the view in that direction if you are in a different section of the bleachers.

I got very lucky with the early launch getting on the first bus out of the Visitors center at around 915  and picking the right spot to sit in the bleachers.

It was exciting to see the launch live for sure. The ~10 second delay in the stream meant that the sonic booms matched up perfectly with the first stage landing on the stream.

Apologies in advance if this doesn't belong here...

KSC Visitor Complex just opened Falcon Heavy launch tickets for annual pass holders. Closet viewing will be 6.25 km from the Apollo/Sat V Center.  10% discount. Not available online, you'll need to call (855) 433-4210.

Good luck.

Just got my Feel the Heat tickets. Took about 20 calls and hangups on hold, and 40min wait. Don't give up!

$187 for "Feel the Heat" tickets. Unclear if I had to be an annual pass holder, so you might be able to save that $100.

Best Luck.

Has anyone watched a launch from the Victory Casino ship? $28 to go out for 5 hours and get a meal. From what I've read they go out 3 miles and there are pictures from the ship that look like a pretty good view. Even if it is a little further out then some of the other spots, you should be able to see the rocket from pad to pad unobstructed.

Thoughts?

What is the public causeway Elon references? The NASA causeway apparently won’t be open, and we still have not heard about Playalinda, have we? I got my ticket for the Saturn V. CEnter viewing but have friends down there who want to know where to watch from outside the gates...

You will have to zoom in to see both cores with their landing burn.
View from Jetty Park!
The sonic booms were amazing. As was the sight of both cores returning!

what will be open or available? Suggestions? Are the parks even open?

Ill be in the US in June, from the 11th to the 23rd (ish) but I am attending a conference in Texas 11-15. With a little bit of slippage (but not too much) this could work out brilliantly to be the first launch I ever see in person. I am excited about the prospect but I have little hope that it actually works out like that. Does anyone know how far in advance you need to buy flights to get a good price? I have friends in Washington State that I could also visit, but thats almost as far away from the cape as you can go in the US. I sort of need to choose between the two.

If you have to choose before the beginning of June I'd just go visit your friends.

It seems to me that fares usually increase once you're within 21 days of departure.  Stay a over Saturday night if you can (that's how the airlines separate price-conscious tourists from freer-spending business people).  I usually start with google.com/flights.

If you're a very frequent traveler, book on miles. With Delta, you can change up to 3 days in advance at no penalty whatever (you may have to pay more miles but at least no change fees) if you are high status.

But I agree with gongora,.. if you go to FL, go with the expectation that you might miss. There are lots of other things to do there. Disney, Universal, LEGOland, KSC, and on and on and on.

Be prepared that FL in June is hot and muggy. Bring sunscreen.

General travel tips are better discussed on non launch specific threads though.   (which is why this series of posts was moved to where it is now)

So, I just watched Hispasat launch.  We parked along the north side of the 401, across the road from the parking garage.  The roadside is just wide enough to pull off straight, and it's elevated with no trees obstructing vision.  Highly recommended.

Hispasat 30W-6 launch montage partially filmed from a parking lot located near the Aviation Maintenance Science building at Embry-Riddle University in Daytona Beach.

What's neat was that I was able to see the first stage reentry burn from my vantage point about 6 and a half minutes into the flight. The bad news was I didn't get any video or photos of it because I was not expecting to see that reentry burn.

I went to KSCVC on Monday for the launch.  Traffic was the worst I have ever seen, Easter Break up north, so a lot of tourist.  The last 1.7 miles to park took two hours.  And then I got sick and left for my brothers house 15 miles away.  But it got cloudy there so we watched it on TV.

I am glad I left early.  Traffic leaving was worse, with accidents.  And 4 visitors to the launch were killed in an accident. Very sad to learn of that news.

Always a good question, answered many times farther down in the thread.  But from personal experience, pretty much anywhere along the north side of 401 is dandy.  You might be able to drive all the way into the area you mention, but the trees are gonna block the early phase of the launch.

I found an area down by the cruise terminal that you could see all the way to LC40.  401 is a little elevated down there, which helps a bunch.  Folks parked perpendicular to the road on the shoulder, ignoring the "No Parking" signage. See my post on the Hispasat launch downthread.  Roughly 8 miles to the pad.

Kennedy Space Center Visitor Complex Offers
Special Viewing Opportunities for the
Commercial Crew SpaceX Demonstration Mission 1 (Demo-1) Launch

Packages include launch parties, commemorative gifts, live commentary and more.

CAPE CANAVERAL (February 15, 2019) – KENNEDY SPACE CENTER – Kennedy Space Center Visitor Complex is kicking off a new era of space exploration, offering exclusive viewing packages for the upcoming Commercial Crew SpaceX Demonstration Mission 1 (Demo-1) launch. This mission is significant as it will be the first, uncrewed test flight of NASA’s Commercial Crew Program, which will carry men and women into space from American soil for the first time since 2011. At Kennedy Space Center Visitor Complex, guests will have the opportunity to experience the awe and excitement of these historic launches just a few miles from the launch pad – the closest public viewing.

“This is the first of many enhanced viewing opportunities to come,” said Therrin Protze, chief operating officer, Kennedy Space Center Visitor Complex. “With crewed launches on the horizon, the interest in space continues to grow and we are poised to offer many more bucket-list experiences to our guests.”

The Demo-1 launch is the first uncrewed test flight of SpaceX’s Crew Dragon spacecraft, which is set to lift off from Kennedy Space Center’s famed launchpad 39A, the same launchpad from which Buzz Aldrin and Neil Armstrong set course for the moon on Apollo 11 in 1969 nearly 50 years ago. The packages are designed to enhance the overall launch viewing experience.

The SpaceX Demo-1 launch experience packages are:

This is the first of many launches to come. Packages for future launches will be customized to enhance the unique components of each mission.

Tonight's launch should be great, with liftoff happening simultaneous with a 95% full moonrise at Cape Canaveral.  I've not seen a night landing from the coast, is any part of the ASDS landing burn visible above the horizon?

RE: SpaceX Falcon Heavy : Arabsat 6A : LC-39A : NET April 7, 2019 --- Launch Viewing

CANA (Cape Canaveral Nat'l Seashore) info is HERE. Currently they are only showing their generic launch warning.

Last year's FH launch was confusing. The rangers told us Playalinda was open, then closed, then finally open. The car line into the park (Playalinda entrance) started before 5:00 am EST last year, but we did have an earlier launch then.

As of 2019-03-23, this year's launch is 2019-04-07 @ 6:30 pm - 8:30 pm EST (local). Park closes at 8:00 pm and they generally don't let you in after 7pm. So... could be a problem.

This will be my second launch viewing attempt.  First one, CRS-16, was delayed due to moldy mouse food.  >:(

In my search for the cheapest flight options and airline policy for changing the flight, this is what I have found for the 3 airlines that had flights from CVG to MCO which fit my schedule.  Higher price tickets and awards tickets likely have different policies.

Delta charges $200/ticket + difference to change flights. (for Main, Comfort or 1st class. No changes on Basic).  This could cost more than just booking new flights.

Frontier will allow changes if you purchase the Works for $80/person/flight.  This could cost more than just booking new flights.

Allegiant offers Trip Flex.  For $50, you can change your entire reservation ONCE up to 1 hour prior to flight.

Hoping this is helpful to some.

Southwest will let you change any time with very few limitations. They have become my go to for finicky business trips because of it.

If any NSF members are headed there, you'll find me in my NSF baseball jersey. Come say hi!!

Keep in mind, Playalinda Beach is as close as the public can get without special tickets, but it is extremely remote. Just a few porta potties, and no cell phone signal!!!

Playalinda is spectacular and one of the prettiest places in Florida. Plus you feel like you are standing next to the rockets.

If you go there. It is worth it, but do give yourself hours to get there for a big launch like this. I plan on arriving there around 2:00pm.

I see that Playalinda officially closes at 8:00 PM.  Do you have any expectations of what they will do if the launch slips late into the window?  I can't see them successfully talking launch fans into leaving on time if a launch is pending.

and no cell phone signal!!!

Is there some way people there can learn of a scrub, or even of changes in T-0?

The Canaveral National Seashore announced on facebook that they would stay open through the launch window. I'd say it is best to resort to radio for launch news. Several local stations will cover it, 90.7 FM or 1350 AM are good choices.

No parking along SR 401 for the Arabsat 6A launch throws a wrench into my plans.  It was a great (free) spot for launch and landing viewing.

Anyone have a guess as to when the parking lots at Port Canaveral will fill up?  Were they open for the Falcon Heavy test flight?  Trying to make the tough choice between Playalinda Beach (for launch) or somewhere at Port Canaveral (for landing).

They have said no parking along rt. 401 since the 1980's. Pull straight in and stay completely off the pavement. Unless they have finally gotten serious about it, you should see several hundred other cars there.

Highway 401 is actually taped off this time. They are letting people park at the end of 401 in the usual place, plenty of room left as of right now.

It is nearly empty here. Can't be a capacity issue.

Odd though, because it was open last time!,

Fortunately,  I found succor at an emergency shelter by the bridge.  .

Jetty Park parking is full/closed. Was just turned around from there. Looking at parking in lot F or G, then walking to Jetty Park. There is no one (no staff) at those lots to right now.

Since they are charging for parking at the port this time around (that’s new, right?), maybe they are serious about no parking along SR-401.

Parking at the end of 401 is about 3/4 full as of right now.  Should be at capacity within half an hour.

The shoulder along 401 itself was taped off this time, so yes they appear serious about keeping people from parking.

FYI, they aren’t letting any more people into Jetty Park, even on foot. They are redirecting people to the boat ramp.

These unprecedented closures of all the regular spots is upsetting. I truly hope that Delaware North is not involved in the change. Launch cadence and importance is ticking up to new heights this year and next with crewed launches, booster returns, heavies, New Glenn, and all the other activity coming up. Hopefully the local authorities will find a way to provide more viewing area that is open to the public rather than only closing things off.

Google Maps satellite imagery is out of date (I attached a screenshot from Apple Maps), but the boat ramp is located here:
https://goo.gl/maps/yNRrBB2RYR82

It's just West of Jetty Park.  It's not a great spot, since there is a berm on the other side of the inlet that gets in the way of seeing the final moments of landing.

In the case of the 401, I'll counter with "hundreds of cars parked along the area's only exit route is an obvious safety hazard".  No need for tinfoil.

The police always keep everyone well off the road and people have been parking here since Mercury without serious incident. Why the change?

Sad to hear that they have decided now is the time to do this. I am in Miami from the 7th (from the UK) so will be heading up to the Kennedy Space Center for the day and then hanging around in the hope of catching the Falcon 9 SpaceX CRS 18 from SLC-40. Meant to be a midnight launch? This would be my first in person launch!

Where would people recommend if the 401 is closed off?

Viewing from 401 is still great, you just need to drive all the way down to the CCAFS gate and park in the designated areas.  There are bleachers and porta-potties, and base staff directing traffic even for night launches.

I don't think anybody would stop you from hiking back west from the parking areas if that's where you want to watch from.  Personally speaking, it was much smoother leaving after the Arabsat scrub as compared to earlier launches when the entire length of 401 was clogged with cars parked next to the street.

Depends on it you want to optimize for launch or landing.  Being a close-to-shore drone ship landing, pushes landing viewing to Jetty Park, though it'll still be pretty far out there.  The viewing area by the entrance to CCAFS sounds iffy.  They were allowing the public there for Arabsat 6A, but maybe that's changing (accord to Ben Cooper's site).

At ~30 km, it won't be so "far out there".  You should be able to see the landing burn all the way down.  If you are on the dock, it should come to rest on the ASDS with about a third showing over the horizon, although viewing through binoculars will depend on conditions like sea spray, thermal layers, and any surface fog.
And lighting.  We see images of the landed first stages on the ASDSs, but are they well lit at night?

So access to SR-401 is completely restricted? You can't even park somewhere else and walk to SR-401? Only other option I can think of then would be 528 for an unobscured view of the launch. Might just watch it from Titusville considering it's not coming back to LZ-1.

Ben Cooper's page cites the roping off of the 401 shoulder, as discussed above.  It was added to his page on April 3, before Arabsat.  The general public was still allowed to drive to and park near the viewing bleachers.

If I recall correctly, cars were parked in all three areas shown.  Still plenty of access, without the road completely clogged.

Thanks for the responses guys. I'll probably head over to the 401 (unless I hear any updates beforehand) nice and early and see what the deal is.

Not overly fussed about the landing, just seeing the launch is a once in a lifetime for me I think.

Falcon Heavy Demo was my first launch.  Don't downplay the landing.  We were able to follow the boosters through binoculars very clearly from entry burn to disappearing over the visitor center just before landing.  It was the highlight of the trip.  I don't think it will be less thrilling with just one booster landing a bit further away.

The launch date is still not official and the flight prices have been dropping, so I've been hedging on actually buying the plane tickets.

The center core is expected to land close to shore---when would we expect OCISLY to return to port assuming the launch happens at 11:30pm June 22 as currently expected?  That might be a useful return flight target, so if it launches on time we get to see OCISLY, and if it's delayed we get a couple of days buffer...

Using SpaceX CRS-17 as a reference, that mission's booster took a little less than 24 hours.

However, the drone ship was 28 kilometers downrange, whereas it'll be 39 kilometers away when the center core touches down. So, there's a chance it'll take a few more than 24 hours (maybe 32).

So, early Monday morning, if the launch late Saturday holds.  I might try to get a return flight Monday afternoon-ish.  That ought to cover a 24-hour scrub too.

Hi Scott, I saw your post on Kickstarter and came here!
I'm still trying to decide whether I fly over to Orlando and see the launch or just watch it online. Cause I'm a foreign student on a budget because of our messed up economy and the trip will cost me around 1000$. I booked a hotel room just to be safe. Campbell Motel, it was the cheapest one with decent reviews :D.
Flights from LA is like 500$... And there is a possibility of missing the launch! Stressful.

So, waiting for PS's update on tickets and more information.

I'm planning to fly down early morning of Fri June 21 and fly back morning Tues June 25.  If all goes well, that should be enough time to attend the plantary society gala Friday night, spend Saturday at KSC with the kids, see the launch Sat night, do other kid stuff Sunday, and watch the ASDS return to port Monday morning.  Too bad Fishlips doesn't open for breakfast.

For folks with a safety margin after the launch I highly recommend a lunch/dinner at Fishlips in Port Canaveral. Great views of the SpaceX Navy, and hopefully of the center core being processed.

There was a rumor there was going to be an F9 first stage mounted for public display outside SpaceX LCC in Port Canaveral.  Does anyone know if that actually happened? (Also rumor of one going to the KSC rocket garden --- I don't think that's happened yet either?)

And no sooner than I post than the launch is delayed to Monday evening. Luckily my flight back isn't until Tuesday morning, but that ate up all my margin for scrubs in one go.

FH on the 24, Atlas V on the 27. Worth stretching the trip to see them both?

I stayed with airbnb-lily, in Titusville for a week. It was very nice, clean, cheap and I was quite welcomed. If you are traveling alone, and you dont mind a small room, its for you. I dont think they serve breakfast, which suits me very well because I am not a breakfast person. It was perfect for me and if I go back alone, I will probably stay there again if possible. If you have problems with the rainbow-flag its not for you though.

I booked an airbnb as well.  There seem to be lots of options in the Orlando area.

I usually stay at the Holiday Inn in Titusville. It's nice, but somewhat pricey.
I'm encouraged by the comments here to try one of the Airbnb options.

Bonus when staying at the Holiday Inn for a Delta IV launches. The guys driving the hydrogen tankers park a bunch of the tankers right out front!

Anybody watching STP-2 from an airplane tonight? I'm trying it for the first time, autopilot will have me half a mile from the west edge of the restricted airspace, then following down to the southern boundary for the booster landing. I'm wondering if there are many other aircraft doing this at each launch but can't find much evidence on the web...hope it's not bumper to bumper along V3 tonight!

I wonder if Playalinda Beach will be open for the Inflight Abort Test? Launch at 8:00 AM EST, beach opens at 6:00 AM EST. I can't imagine any hazards from the breakup that could possibly be of concern at that distance.

They usually close the access road to Playalinda a few hours before launch though.  While they allow watching from parking area 1 and north, they typically don't allow anyone on the access road between fueling and launch.  They typically don't open early to accommodate this.  So I'm not sure if they will be open, but I am really hoping they will be.  View from there should be spectacular.

Can anyone tell me if, or where to find out if, Jetty Park will stay open past the standard closing time of 8PM for the Starlink launch?

They *usually* do.  Although since there's no booster return, the side of the 528 causeway is at a similar distance but the view is unobstructed.

If I were to drive there and find it closed, would the next best thing be the Max Brewer parkway bridge?  (I know nothing about that but read it somewhere on NSF, perhaps this thread.)

No dice, they close at 6.  It's listed on their website, and I called to confirm.

That said, the Max Brewer should be a great place to watch.  Cloud cover is minimal today, so you should be able to see up to the entry burn just above the NE horizon.

I'm in the area with the family and I really want to watch the IFA launch tomorrow. This would be my first launch, so I want to optimize it as much as possible. Given the announced closures, the only two places that seem to be appropriate are the Max Brewer causeway and Apollo beach (which will be open), north of Playalinda (which won't).  The problem I see with Max Brewer is that LC 39A seems to be due East from it, and the Sun would be very low in the sky, which should make it hard to watch the launch. That's why I'm leaning towards Apollo beach. Is this reasoning correct? Is viewing from Apollo beach a good plan? Is there a better location? Thanks for any advice you can give me.

True, sunrise is at 7:15.  But we're still fairly close to solstice, so the sun will be in the southern half of the sky.  A due east view might not be so bad, and it should be better the farther south you go.

Thanks for your advice. It was spot on. I ended up watching it from Kirk Point Riverside Park, a small park in Titusville overlooking the Indian River about 4 miles south of the causeway. The sun was quite a bit south of the launchpad from there. It was an unforgettable experience!

Kennedy Space Center Visitor Complex to Close Temporarily Due to Threat of COVID-19

Press Release From: Kennedy Space Center Visitor's Center
Posted: Saturday, March 14, 2020

KENNEDY SPACE CENTER – Out of an abundance of extreme caution and in the best interest of our guests and crewmembers, Kennedy Space Center Visitor Complex will temporarily be closed as of March 16, 2020 until further notice. During this closure guests will not be permitted onto visitor complex grounds.

As always, the health and safety of our employees and guests is the highest priority for Kennedy Space Center Visitor Complex. Our goal is also to mitigate the spread of the virus.

When it became evident that the coronavirus disease posed a health concern to the public, Kennedy Space Center Visitor Complex upgraded the already comprehensive and extensive availability of hand sanitizer throughout the park. As well, since that time, we have also increased the routine cleaning of frequently touched surfaces in the workplace and at workstations, countertops, doorknobs and ticket counters.

Leadership will continue to monitor the situation and when it is deemed safe for guests to return, the entire facility will be cleaned and sanitized prior to re-opening. This will include Kennedy Space Center Tour buses, all attractions, eateries and theaters at the main campus and at the Apollo/Saturn V Center.

Date specific Daily Admission tickets for the period we are closed will be refunded. Unexpired Daily Admission tickets will still be valid for use. Private programs, such as ATX, Overnight Adventures, Special Interest Bus Tours and Dine With An Astronaut programs will be canceled and refunds will automatically be issued for activities scheduled on these days. During this temporary closure, the Reservations Department will also be unavailable. To complete a reservation for a future date, please visit our website at KennedySpaceCenter.com.

To help protect against the spread of the coronavirus (COVID-19) and help ensure guest and employee safety, we have taken and will continue taking actions to help prevent the spread of the coronavirus based on the guidance of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).

Our management continues to work closely with local, state and federal experts on this topic to ensure that we are up to date on the situation as it evolves.

Bringing up the topic now that a date has been announced. Prospects looking grim to really be able to watch the DM-2 launch from any of the prime viewing locations.

I'm guessing Titusville and 528 are going to be the only viable options.  I wouldn't be surprised if they closed Max Brewer too.

The viewing stands at the end of S.R. 401 were not open today (Starlink 7).  There was a good-sized crowd along the usual causeways, and in the parking lots on the south side of the port.

FHP is going to restrict viewing DM-2 from the beaches. With all the good spots for launch viewing shutdown, I think I'm just going to wait for USCV-1 in August.

I am considering the Kennedy Visitor Center parking and a movie deal for viewing the SAOCOM launch. Would that be a good location for this launch and stage landing?

It's OK, but the pads themselves will be obscured by trees.  You're still 7-9 miles from SLC-40 and LZ-1.

See the first post of this thread for general guidance.

Someone said there was no viewing allowed on the 401 in the Port for the Crew-1 launch anyone know why?

The shoulder alongside 401 has been closed during launches for at least a year now.  It was too much of a safety hazard with traffic piling up after a launch or scrub.

That said, there is the public viewing area at the end of 401, just in front of the CCAFS gates.  It is usually manned for launches, but has been closed lately (including Crew-1) due to COVID.  There are some other areas off 401 around the north side of the port that you might be able to pull over and watch, but this land all belongs to the Port Authority and you could be asked to leave at any time.

Do any of you happen to know if the visitor parking lot and grandstands/grass area just outside the air force station will be open for this?  The powers that be long ago closed the 401 to parking along the riverside -- but the Air Force started supporting parking for viewing along with local law enforcement just outside their visitor badge center before the gates.  There's nobody you can call or facebook/twitter/forums I can find even mentioning it.

Ask in the KSC / CCAFS viewing thread.  Viewing on 401 was just discussed there a couple weeks ago. https://forum.nasaspaceflight.com/index.php?topic=44657.100

It was closed for Crew-1, and I presume nothing has changed in the meantime.  It's probably too late to call now, but Patrick SFB's switchboard should be able to get you to somebody with an answer.  I think the CCSFS gate is one of the options.

Thanks!

For an LC-39A launch with no RTLS, Playalinda is always better.

I live in the northeast US, but I will be down in Florida from March 6 through 10.  It just so happens that there may be a Falcon 9 launch during this window....though I'm seeing conflicting information.

It looks like NET is currently March 7th at 10 @ 10:41 PM Eastern from SLC-40.

I have never seen a live launch before and not sure when my next opportunity might be.   I've been googling, but particularly since this is a night launch, it's hard to come by solid info.  (Parks will be closed, etc.)

Anyone have a suggestion as the best place to watch this launch from?

I am flying into Orlando at 9:30pm Wednesday night.  I am staying in Melbourne but will make a diversion to see this.  Where would the best/closest to the launch/safe place be for me to see this launch given I am not familiar with the area?  It will be my first!

I watched a night launch from the causeway at the eastern edge of the Max Brewer bridge.
The distance to the pad is about 22 km.
If you pull over pretty quickly after getting off the bridge itself the launch pad will be visible just to the right of the VAB.
Once it launches you can walk across the roadway and follow it as it goes northeast.
I was able to see the second stage burning for quite a while.

Space View Park suggested above is just south of that bridge on the west (Titusville) side of the intracoastal.
Someone got good photos of the Crew 2 launch from there.
It's not that much farther away and it would keep you out of the traffic jam coming back across the bridge.

I highly encourage you to give this a shot.  My friend and I really enjoyed it, and thought it well worth the three hours of driving it took us.

For SLC-40 (which tonight's launch is from), the Rt 528 Causeway over the Banana River is the closest, with a clear view of the pad across the water.  It is also on your way to Melbourne (depending on where you are going in Melbourne, it may make more sense to just continue on A1A down the island).

Much of the first stage burn was visible from inland at Delray Beach FL. Thats about 175 miles / 280 km away. Bearing ~173 degrees from LC-40 IIRC.
It was tiny but neat. Quite reddened by the long, humid path length. Disappeared behind a cloud before MECO.
That’s the second Falcon launch i have seen from down here.

Anyone viewing the Inspiration4 launch tonight?

I'm vacillating between watching it from the side of A1A or Fishlips, but would love to see some fellow NSF folks.

Update: The park service just posted that Playalinda Beach will be closed for the launch starting at 4pm.

I drove down to see this one. Haven't picked a spot yet. How early does Fishlips fill up?

Playalinda will be one of the best public spots to view the launch, but just okay for landing. I'll be going to A1A for this one.

Cross post:
Some friends have a place south of Vero Beach, FL. Bright people (psychologist and occupational therapist) but not techies in the least.  I told them about the Jan 6 launch of Starlink 4-5. They watched from their balcony and were fascinated. He said they could see it from shortly after launch through staging. She said they could see through binoculars “all four pieces come apart”.

They saw first stage burn, staging, AND fairing separation!
From the shore
Fairing separation!
(She didnt know what a fairing is.)

So disappointed I couldn’t join them.
Pretty much clouded out farther south.
Only saw the smoke from the first few seconds of flight.

The “best place to watch the Transporter 3 launch” depends on what you want to see.
Playalina for launch
Jetty Park for the RTLS landing
Farther down the beach for staging.
(OneSpeed modeled that staging will be east of N Hutchinson Island at about 78 deg elevation. Transporter 3 will fly much closer to the coast than the Jan 6 launch.)
The rocket will fly pretty much towards the Sun if viewed from the Cape area, possibly too close at some point for safety while using binoculars.
Do not put yourself in a position where you could follow or be searching for the stages and accidentally look at the Sun thru binoculars!

Edit: A1A runs the length of the Florida eastern beach. Without a cross street that designator is not specific.

Another good post about RTLS viewability:

A question for those that have seen a RTLS. Sitting now on the beach about a half mile south of Cocoa Beach pier. I was thinking of going to the grass plot near the SpaceX control building, but from where I'm sitting I see BO's launch site clearly and some structures looking north along the Coast. Should I stay where I'm at or go up to Port Canaveral? Here obviously has a  clear view over the ocean whereas the grass plot does not. Thanks to anyone that offers their opinion.
I live in Cocoa Beach and have seen RTLS from near and far, from Jetty Park, to boat at sea, to Playalinda Beach. Jetty Park is a bit crowded and too close for my taste. By far my fav view of the RTLS is Cherie Down park, just a little to the south of Jetty Park and not "gate controlled".  You can't see the rocket on the pad and won't see it until it gets about T+ 10 seconds. Very few locations feature a view of the top of the rocket. Cherie Down is close enough to give you great sound and expansive view and very direct view of the landing.  Parking is free but pretty limited so if its full, I'd just park somewhere close and walk out there.
Here's a short vid from the beach the last time I went there:

For anybody interested, the launch viewing area on State Road 401 was open for today's CSG-2 attempt.  It was the first time I've seen it open since the Pandemic started.

This is an excellent location, on the north side of Port Canaveral, just outside the CCSFS gate.  Security and traffic direction is provided by base staff.  You have a clear line of sight to the rocket sitting on the pad, and are just as close as Jetty Park for the landings (though it's behind the tree line).

A bit off-topic: usually, how do you organize your visit around the chance of a scrub or delay?

I am planning to travel to Florida to watch a Dragon launch in April, waiting for the readiness review outcome, but don't know how to manage the possibility of delays. Do you know of a statistical model for that, maybe related to the season?

The best you can do is plan for as many additional days as your schedule and wallet will allow.  There's plenty else to do around the coast and of course Orlando if you end up needing to wait a few days.

April weather will be pretty good, probably the biggest question is how long of a window the ISS has for the crew launch.

You and I both, and it seems we were in good company!

Windows for launching to the ISS are 5 minutes at most. IIRC for Falcon they are instantaneous. SpaceX completes fueling just in time to launch as the plane of the orbit passes over the launch site, and they have little ability to hold before either the fuel “warms” excessively or the plane offset becomes too large to make.

The above advice fro leetdan is critical: be prepared to stay. Every time I go to watch, most people leave after the first scrub. You just have to tough it out. It’s worth it.

I was referring to the ISS window for Visiting Vehicles, though I assume a regular crew rotation would have high priority.  Yes, without yaw steering the launch window is instantaneous on any given opportunity.

I have been searching online for statistics on delays in launching to the ISS. Unfortunately I couldn't find anything including cargo. It must exist somewhere. Any hint?

SpaceX Falcon 9 CSG-2: The life cycle of a booster from launch to landing

If you listen to the audio you can hear something important for watching a launch live.
Pay attention to the recognizable audio from the SpaceX webcast. It is many seconds behind the events of the launch.
If you are using a webcast to keep up to date about the progression of the launch, ASSUME that there is a large lag.
Don’t watch your phone through the whole countdown.
Look towards the launch site well before T=0

SpaceX Falcon 9 CSG-2: The life cycle of a booster from launch to landing

If you listen to the audio you can hear something important for watching a launch live.
Pay attention to the recognizable audio from the SpaceX webcast. It is many seconds behind the events of the launch.
If you are using a webcast to keep up to date about the progression of the launch, ASSUME that there is a large lag.
Don’t watch your phone through the whole countdown.
Look towards the launch site well before T=0

I followed that protocol the last time I saw a launch in person, although it was an Atlas V and not a Falcon 9. And it was a night launch too.

Having watched other videos of people viewing launches in person, I assumed liftoff would occur when the webcast’s countdown clock read T-1 minute.

Started my camera at T-2 minutes and before I knew it, the engines ignited and the rest was history.

Fair
The weather forecast for Tybee is clear, but the Sun may be in your eyes.
See if you can find something to shade you like a stop sign.
Or go out on the Tybee beach pier and stand under the roof.

Tybee Island is ~250 mi/400 km from the Cape
The path should go within ~150 mi/ ~250 km of Tybee
You might be able to see MECO, staging, SECO-1 and fairing deployments to the southeast.

How early should I arrive a Playalinda to see today's Starlink 4-15 launch?

Offline dotdad

@Collin Not sure what the ideal arrival time is, I've heard 4 hours for spots on the stairs.  But for a beautiful weekend day with no launch you can wait 30 minutes just to get through the park gate.  Since you posted this 75 minutes ago, if you are still looking for an answer, GO NOW!

PS Bring all supplies you will need, there is nothing out there but beautiful beach. Water, food, snacks, chairs, all up to you.   Convenience stores on US-1 right before the bridge is your last place to buy anything.

Just for an up to date info, I crossed the bridge at 3:20pm and spend almost 1hr crawling to the gate!

Today was my first rocket launch view, so as a precaution I called Canaveral National Seashore (phone # from NPS app) at about 1pm and she told me about a possible road closure "a couple of hours before launch" !!
Then I rushed from Sanford to try to get there hoping for misinformation about road closure but what I saw was almost ONE hour to reach the gate, arriving at the first parking lot with 15 min to spare... and no road closure ::)

Amazing experience  :D

For those of you who live in the area, I'll be in and around Ft Myers and wonder how far I'll have to drive to even see a launch. I don't think the 200+ miles to see it up close and personal is going to work out (this time) but can I get a decent view from someplace a bit south, one of the beaches down there? Any recommendations? Back to lurking. Thanks.

[Edit] I realize I'll need a great pair of binoculars and which direction the rocket is heading is important too but I'm hoping to at least catch a glimpse once the rocket gets high enough...

So I’m currently straight across from you in the town of Jupiter. Typically the piers in the area offer really good vantage points for launches (especially the southern trajectories that basically fly straight overhead), and sometimes if the conditions are right you’re even far enough east of the cape that you can catch the first couple seconds of the F9 entry burn.

Unfortunately the heavy cloud cover these last couple afternoons have made it feel more like I’m trying to catch a launch at VSFB instead…  ::)

If you can ditch the cloud cover, I’ve also frequently watched from family in the orlando and other central parts of the state as well.

Hope that helps!

Ben Cooper doesn't list Playalinda as a viewing site for Starlink 4-25, despite the park opening at 6 AM and usually being open for launches at this hour. Anyone hear if the beach is going to be closed Sunday morning for one reason or another?

Looks like it's been updated now.

Thankyou for all the Information so far! I am visiting Florida at the moment all the way from the Netherlands. Last time (2019) I saw a launch from rt 528. I would love to see a launch from playalinda beach. The videos I saw are amazing! I was hoping someone could tell me at what time I Should arrive at the gates. Were staying in Orlando and I don’t mind getting up early.

It’s for the Starlink launch this Sunday.

Thank you!

I have heard that Playalinda Beach was severely damaged by Hurricane Nicole. It may not be open for a while for launches.

Bad news, everybody... The excellent viewing area at the end of SR 401, just outside the CCSFS gates, is being shut down. It's been almost 5 years since they stopped allowing people to park on the shoulder of 401, but these bleachers gave excellent views of vehicles on the pad, and were about the closest the general public could get to the landing zones.

NSF's own photog team provides the latest advice, including mention of sites that don't work anymore:

« Last Edit: 12/25/2023 04:35 am by ChrisC »
PSA #1: EST does NOT mean "Eastern Time".  Use "Eastern" or "ET" instead, all year round, and avoid this common error.  Google "EST vs EDT".
PSA #2: It's and its: know the difference and quietly impress grammar pedants.  Google "angry flower its" .  *** See profile for two more NSF forum tips. ***
