STS-65 Flight Deck Footage
« on: 04/26/2007 05:10 am »
A quick snippet of this launch was posted before, but this is the real deal in it's entirety.

Video begins around the T - 3 minute mark -- just prior to pressurization of the liquid oxygen tank (ET LO2 pressurization), and ends shortly after ET separation.

STS-65 Crew:

    Robert D. Cabana (3), Commander
    James D. Halsell (1), Pilot
Richard J. Hieb (3), Payload Commander
    Carl E. Walz (2), Mission specialist 2
Leroy Chiao (1), Mission Specialist 3
    Donald A. Thomas (1), Mission Specialist 4
    Chiaki Naito-Mukai (1), Payload Specialist 1
Jean-Jacques Favier (0), Alternate Payload Specialist (CNES)

Of note regarding this video is the clarity of the audio -- I do not recall an in the cockpit launch video where the sounds of the crew members comments, respiration...hell, pulse rate, was so clearly audible.  (Joking about the pulse rates by the way, but you get the point).  The sound of SRB sep. at 5 minutes, 38 seconds into the video is amazing.

(All times are video elapsed time)

7:14:  Cabana:  Well, we got four new astronauts on board -- 50 miles (altitude)

8:08:  Halsell?:  G's are really coming on, now.

8:11:  Unident. Crew:  What are we up to?

8:13:  Unident. Crew:  No more than 2 (G's) I think.

8:15:  Cabana:  Two minutes to MECO

8:20:  Cabana (instructing his crew how to breath through the G's)  Okay, standby for some exhale, here.  Just bear with it.

If you listen closely, around 8:47 seconds into the video, you can just pick up a slight tearing or ripping sound.  Sound becomes noticeably audible at around 8:52/3.  Continues to get louder (sounds almost like static) until it becomes a loud tearing noise at 9:04.

9:05:  Halsell:  Just the checklist (being pulled away from velcro)

9:17:  Cabana:  A minute to MECO, standby for (3G) throttles.

9:19:  Halsell:  Throttling.

9:20:  Cabana:  Roger.

9:22:  Cabana:  (Inaud.) check at mach 21

9:24:  Cabana:  Standby...mark.

9:26:  Halsell:  Looks good.

9:33:  Halsell:  Engines are good

9:34:  Cabana:  Okay.

9:36:  Cabana:  Mach 22.

9:40:  Cabana:  Traj (Trajectory) looks great.

9:46:  Cabana:  Thirty seconds (to MECO).
(Halsell concurs.)

10:06:  Cabana:  Ten seconds.

10:27:  Cabana:  Mach 25

10:09:  Halsell:  Here comes a bug (?)

10:10:  Halsell:  Nine tenths (Engine) throttles -- idle.

10:13:  Cabana:  Roger.

10:17:  Crew thrown forward as MECO occurs.

10:19:  Cabana:  Welcome to space, guys!!

10:20:  Unident. Crew:  Whooooooo!!!

10:22:  Halsell:  MECO.

10:23:  Cabana:  MECO confirmed.
(Halsell echos)

10:26: Halsell:  (??) We have no SA's down.

10:28:  Cabana:  Okay, standby for (ET) sep.

10:36:  ET SEP.

As ET falls away...

10:40:  Halsell:  104.

10:42:  Cabana:  104.  One thousand one, one thousand two...that looks   good.  Plus X in.

10:46:  Houston:  Columbia, Houston nominal MECO.  No OMS One required.  Go for ET Photo DTO (Photo of ET in freefall.)

10:50:  Cabana:  Roger, go for photo DTO.  Nominal MECO.  Plus X in work.

-End video-

Awesome video!!  Here's the best thing about it - you get the sounds from inside the cabin that you don't normally hear.  It's usually just crew intercom audio.  But here you get the sound of the SRBs, SSMEs, BSMs, visors going up and down, etc.  Truly amazing!  I love the part at 6:15 where Cabana hits Halsell in the arm and gives him an ecstatic thumbs up!! ;)

Go to 04:30 in the video and look at the small external shot. What the hell is that?

That's amazing. As they are climbing up, I'm sure that's the HPFTPs you can hear whining. Superb audio. Good spot.

Yeah I was interested to hear some of the other cockpit sounds.  Any idea on what the noise was about  :40 in around the T-3 minute mark?  Sounded like maybe a suit fan turning off or slowly powering down?  Unsure. ?

The launch video that was inserted in ran about 3 seconds or so ahead of the audio but it was cool to see inside and outside of the same launch.

Glad someone put this together on YouTube... how do they obtain the cockpit audio tracks?  They usually downlink the flight deck video on NASA Select within a day or so after launch but  where  does the cockpit audio come from that is publicly available?  Would love to see something like this for the earlier shuttle launches, but I don't think they recorded flight deck launch video until the 1990s. Cockpit tapes during a last-second RSLS main engine abort would sure be interesting to hear. :)

Pick up a copy of 'Space Shuttle: the First 20 Years' and read some of the stories about the RSLS aborts from the crew members.  Some funny stuff!

While that is an extreme case, it's not uncommon.  Some of the other large shockwaves I've seen occurred on STS-106, STS-111 and STS-115.  It actually sort of pulsed around Atlantis during the ascent of STS-115.  But that one on STS-65 was a monster!  I've never seen it last like that either.  But Jim's right.  It's condensation from the stack breaking the sound barrier.  The shockwave is literally water being squeezed out of the air.

Thanks, I'll look that book up, do you know who the author is?

Another "funny" note.. I remember watching this launch on CNN ..sort of..  this was July 8, 1994, when O.J. Simpson was being arraigned for murder, so CNN had  THAT breathtaking important news  LIVE..with the  Columbia launch down in the lower corner of the screen with no sound.  Moderately amusing but disappointing.  They did a similar thing 14 months later on the STS-69 launch in Sept. 1995..actually they didn't show it at all, one of maybe 2 or 3 shuttle launches CNN never showed live.. becasue they were more interested in the press conference of a Senator who was resigning office.   Glad we ahd our priorities in order back then haha.   At the time CNN was the only way to see a lunch live if it wasn't on C-SPAN and you dind't have the NASA channel where you were.

Yeah I jsut watched it again.. loved hearing the rattling of the whole inside of the cabin during first stage.  I think the noise at main engine start and the first seconds of launch were dubbed in though.

Thanks for the input, it just seemed unusual how it appeard to "hug" the SRb plume.

Good job I did not notice it 'live' on TV!

I saw that too AstroRJY  i missed the STS-69 launch so i didnt see it then but STS-65 i saw the split thing with the OJ case. There was sound on the launch but you couldnt hear it--i couldnt hear Lisa Malone's line at liftoff--or anything--instead i got to learn about DNA samples or something.  I'd love if someone had a video of the STS-65 launch with Lisa Malone, James Hartsfield, etc as would be seen on NASA TV--without OJ Simpson.  I had to rely on CNN for years.
Three Engines onboard Endeavour have now throttled back to 2/3rds throttle to prepare the spacecraft to pass through the area of maximum dynamic pressure and to go supersonic

It was published by DK Publishing in June 2002.  The authors are the astronauts with a foreword by Jim Lovell.

Thanks for the book title, I'll be sure to find that.  I think it would be interesting to start a thread soon on  RSLS aborts.  Meanwhile, have you ever heard the tape of the first one, from 41-D Discovery in 1984?  If you go to shuttlesource.com and click on LISTEN TO AUDIO, scroll down and you on a download my tape of it there that I gave to the shuttlesource webmaster for him to upload to his site.  He has some more of my audios and videos  he borrowed and duplicated that he'll be adding eventually.  It sounds pretty dramatic when they had the first abort that close to launch and were trying to sort out what happened.

Its called the Prandtl-Glauert Singularity

but those condensation shockwaves do not signify the transition into supersonic speed, they announce the point where the vehicle reaches its maximum pressure force against the atmosphere, causing the condensation around the vehicle to compress.

just like the vortexes on the wintips of the shuttle when it lands, there is more pressure being exerted on the bottom of the shuttle than the top, so the border between the two are shown.

you know, that ol' commentator shaz...
"Any intelligent fool can make things bigger, more complex,
and more violent. It takes a touch of genius, and a lot of courage,
to move in the opposite direction." ~ Albert Einstein
