Title: Chinese sub-orbital launches
Post by: Liss on 09/25/2010 08:10 am
Three NOTAMs were issued for today in China:

The latter closed a strip from Taiyuan to Korla. Maybe a missile launch with or without an ABM test.

It seems that the flight path leads southwards from Taiyuan and not westwards to Korla. If this is true then it is not an ABM launch.

AFAIU, the legend of the picture reads:

User kktt on the 9ifly chinese space forum supposed it could be a Julang-2 SLBM launch from Dalian, with the eastern area for 1st stage and the western one for the 2nd stage and warhead.
(If so, it would feature direct overflight of Tianjin, a city as large as New York.)
Title: Re: Chinese sub-orbital launches
Post by: input~2 on 07/24/2011 04:49 pm
AFAIU, this user infers that the trajectory passed in the middle of the Bohai Sea (South of Dalian) in order not to overfly major cities like Beijing and Tianjin.
Title: Re: Chinese sub-orbital launches
Post by: Liss on 07/25/2011 05:15 pm
Yes, but the map presented by kktt clearly shows overflight of Tianjin.

Well, is is interesting to note that Shijian-11-03 passed in the vicinity of Dalian, the suspected launch area, on July 20 at 02:43 UTC.

If a launch from Bohai sea area was intended, why no NOTAM was issued for this area?

If a launch from Bohai sea area was intended, why no NOTAM was issued for this area?
First, I can't say there was no NOTAM for the Bohai sea since I didn't check NOTAMs for the FIR where the Northern part of the Bohai Sea is located.
Second, there might well have been no NOTAM for the launch area: this is the case for all CZ launches from XSLC, TSLC and JSLC (AFAIK, there are even no NOTAMS for the dropped CZ-3B/3C first stages or second stages).

The giant "bubble of light" seen in Beijing and Shanghai on August 20, at 21:07 LT could be linked to an ICBM launch as suggested by this source (in Chinese)

Umm, Shijian-11-01 flew over the Bohai Sea area at 20:46 Beijing time and probably had a visibility of the area until 20:53. One may wonder if the times stamped at the images are precise.

A first remark is that the "bubble" seems to originate to the West of Beijing , where the pictures were taken, looking at the reddish twilight near the "bubble". So if the origin of the bubble is a sudden blow-out of an ICBM upper stage, the event could have taken place over Xinjiang.
Concerning the timing, several minutes could have elapsed between the launch and the upper stage thrust termination (180s in the case of a Minuteman) which triggered the bubble..

Interesting to note that People's Daily is mentionning ICBM as one of the potential reasons for the "giant bubble" observed on August 20

A microblogger (http://weibo.com/1403366091/xl9ebBIxF) with the Beijing Planetarium has calculated that the center of the "bubble" was located at an altitude of about 267 km above a location West of Bayan Nur, Inner Mongolia (N403601E1051556) as depicted in the attached picture.

Is January Chinese ASAT Testing Month?

January 4, 2013
Gregory Kulacki, China project manager and senior analyst

Quote
In 2007 and 2010 China conducted anti-satellite (ASAT) weapons tests, both on January 11. Rumors circulating for the past few months suggest that some within the U.S. defense and intelligence community believe China is preparing to conduct another ASAT test.

The first media report on these rumors appeared in October. China’s Ministry of Defense challenged the information in that report, but in November contacts in China told us an announcement about an upcoming ASAT test was circulated within the Chinese government. We were unable to find a public statement confirming plans for a test in the Chinese media or on publicly accessible Chinese government websites. Then, just before Christmas, a high-ranking U.S. defense official told us that the Obama administration was very concerned about an imminent Chinese ASAT test.

Given these high-level administration concerns, and past Chinese practice, there seems to be a strong possibility China will conduct an ASAT test within the next few weeks. What kind of test and what the target might be is unclear...

FWIW, there's what appears to be a group of targets some 240 km to the northwest of that, around 39.143 N, 88.617 E. The area has been heavily imaged by DigitalGlobe since 2004 and, somewhat bizarrely, has what appears to be a recently-built model of an Eiffel-like tower at 39.1484 N, 88.5973 E.

Edit: There's another such tower nearby at 39.1491 N, 88.6152 E, next to a heavily impacted target cross.  Instrumentation towers for observing terminal weapons effects???

The lower picture (00414588iflp0x9s8spkdk.jpg) was uploaded on Weibo April 11 at 1414 UTC. It was shot from Beijing looking due West. Some comments refer to a possible blow-out of an ICBM upper stage.

The photo was shot just outside Beijing (north-east side) at 12:39 and 12:44 UTC on April 11. Apparently there was a successful missile test out of TSLC on that night (http://bbs.9ifly.cn/thread-11492-1-1.html) (given the eastern flight path - JL-2?).

These time tags apply to the upper photo.
The lower photo I was  referring to was shot at around 9pm LT according to the guy who uploaded  it on weibo (that would be around 1300UTC, I guess I mixed up the UTC  conversion in my post above)

Well the article underlines that the rocket was very probably launched from a TEL with an apogee close to GEO, make what you will of that.

I'll note two things that strike me about this launch.

1) It was the first time since 2007 that the US government has publicly said that China conducted an ASAT test. They did not do so for the tests in Jan 2010 and Jan 2013 even though the Wikileaked cable sent after the 2010 test indicates that they knew full well it was another test of the same SC-19 system as used in 2007 and told China so in their demarche. The US also refrained from calling the May 2013 test of the new system that could potentially reach GEO, but did say that its profile did not match either a missile defense test or a space launch.

2) There was no mention in either the US or Chinese statements of this test about a target. In the Jan 2010 and Jan 2013 tests, both China and the US statements mentioned that there was a second ballistic launch of a target as well as an actual intercept.

The description of this test by China is very similar to the way they described the SC-19 testing in Jan 2010 and Jan 2013. But if this was another test of the same system, why do it if there wasn't a target? What would they gain when they've already tested it multiple times with three successful intercepts?

Could it be that this was NOT another test of the SC-19, but instead the second flight test of the new version that could reach nearly to GEO which I analyzed here:
http://swfound.org/media/167224/Through_a_Glass_Darkly_March2014.pdf

If so, that would account for both the US ability to clearly state that it was an ASAT test and not a missile defense test, AND account for the lack of a second launch of a ballistic target. It would also make sense in terms of the testing profile of a new system (first launch is a test of the rocket along with a science payload, second launch is of the rocket along with the first launch of an interceptor).

I honestly don't have any hard data to back that claim up, but it's the only thing that makes sense to me.

Comments and alternative hypotheses welcome.

The U.S. government has claimed (loudly!) that China conducted an ASAT test in 2007. I don't think this is the first time it has been saying so.

As it was a missile intercept test, there was even no need to state about a target, which was obvious. Otherwise, how come it could be an intercept test?

The U.S. government has claimed (loudly!) that China conducted an ASAT test in 2007. I don't think this is the first time it has been saying so.

As I said, this is the first time SINCE 2007 the US has labeled such activity an ASAT test, despite other ASAT tests happening in 2005, 2006, 2010, and twice in 2013.

As it was a missile intercept test, there was even no need to state about a target, which was obvious. Otherwise, how come it could be an intercept test?

China did NOT say it was an intercept test, the language they used was an "anti-missile technology test":
http://www.mod.gov.cn/auth/2014-07/23/content_4524048.htm

And the US govt specifically said it was a "non-destructive test":
http://news.yahoo.com/us-says-china-tested-anti-satellite-missile-193630285.html

What value would there be in doing a non-destructive test of a system you've already successfully tested three times with actual intercepts?

Further analysis of this launch.

Quote
Not everyone is convinced China is developing an ABM system. Hans Kristensen, the director of the Nuclear Information Project for the Federation of American Scientists, is one of them.

“The first [observation] is wondering why China is spending effort and money on developing an anti-ballistic missile defense system given the enormous challenges and expenses the United States and Russia have had to dedicate to their efforts over the years with only partial success to show for it?” He said it seems highly unlikely that Chinese engineers would suddenly be able to overcome those challenges and deploy an effective ABM system.

Kristensen said his second observation is that a Chinese decision to develop and deploy an ABM system seems contradictory to China’s well-known opposition to US missile defense plans in the Pacific. He does not believe that a Chinese missile defense system would be able to counter the advanced and large US and Russian nuclear missile forces. It would be a somewhat different matter with India.

“If Indian military planners concluded that a Chinese ABM system was capable enough to threaten the effectiveness of India’s small nuclear deterrent aimed at China, it could potentially cause Indian planners to increase the number of long-range missiles it plans to deploy to deter China, or, which would be a worrisome and destabilizing development, begin to develop and deploy MIRVed [multiple independently targetable re-entry vehicle] warheads on Indian ballistic missiles to overwhelm a Chinese ABM system,” he said. “In that case, a Chinese ABM system would seem to undermine rather than enhance Chinese security.”

Rest on link.

China is not developing an ABM "system". They're developing hit-to-kill midcourse missile defense technology, which is also used for direct ascent ASATs. They're just calling it "missile defense" in public because that's politically acceptable, which ASATs are not.

Well there was some confusion on what happened, but it seems that the pictures of a rocket stage (1st stage?) are from yesterday and was NOT launched from Jiuquan as originally guessed (remember that there was supposed to be a satellite launch today?  ;)). The reported site of the rocket stage debris is in Otog, Inner Mongolia (38.92 N, 107.50 E), which does not match with the track that satellite launch is supposed to take.

On the other hand, it DOES fit with the missile launch track out of Taiyuan yesterday. Given the rocket has the standard paint job of satellite launchers, people there are guessing that some kind of sub-orbital test were done by the Long March 2C yesterday towards the west.  ::)

I did done some fast calculations and I see the distance between TSLC and the place the rocket did crashed is only around 356 kilometers / 221 mile from TSLC.

Can it be likely that the first stage of the rocket (likely a Long march family rocket) did failed somewhere in mid-flight?

Nope, the orbital launch that carried out two days later as planned suggests the test on Aug 7 is a success, because there is no large difference between the 1st stages of the two LVs used (CZ-2C & CZ-4C). If the CZ-2C failed on Aug 7, the CZ fleet would be ground to clarify the problem. That would be long (just imagine how the GF-2 was delayed).

The 'crash', I presume, is a normal ground impact of the separated 1st stage. The engines shut down normally with some residual toxic fuel in tank - only few kilos of such can create a horrible scene like this.

1st stage failure was never seen among the seldom failures of CZ fleet LVs in the past decade.

However, it also confused me why the NOTAM zones did not cover, at least, the impact zone of the 1st stage.

I think there's enough evidence to suggest that China is doing some degree of testing of hypersonics, but beyond that I wouldn't put a lot of faith in the rest of the claims made in the Gertz piece.

Gertz claims that these two tests prove this is a "high priority" system for China and Fisher claims that they pose a "near-term strategic threat" to the US. However, the US has also done multiple tests of hypersonic glide vehicles (as Gertz points out towards the end) yet Prompt Global Strike is far from a top priority of the US and the technology has a long ways to go before it will be militarily useful. Details:
http://fas.org/sgp/crs/nuke/R41464.pdf
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hypersonic_Technology_Vehicle_2

As far as the claim that this test "accelerates China’s development timeline exponentially", I don't think the person cited understands what exponential means. It's also not clear to me what piece of this is related to China's ASAT testing, other than just firing off rockets.

American testing and development of hypersonics and PGS has caused significant concern in Russia and China, but of course the US position is that those technologies don't pose a threat to those countries:
http://carnegieendowment.org/2013/10/04/conventional-prompt-global-strike-and-russia-s-nuclear-forces
http://poniforum.csis.org/blog/blurred-lines-the-threat-of-conventional-prompt-global-strike-to-

Yet then we see in the Gertz piece a quote from Fuell stating that the US has "great concern...if [China] were to apply the same technology and capability with a conventional warhead or even just without a warhead because of the kinetic energy that it has."

I know plenty of smart people on China that have concluded this is largely just China mirroring and hedging - China is interested in this technology because the US is interested in it. It sees the US investing money and effort and so concludes that there must be something of value there.

As is usually the case with China, divining "the truth" in all this can be extremely difficult.

For a military test I would indeed have expected this.
But the DF-21 is solid propellant, no? This vehicle is clearly N2O4 based, so the suggestion that it is CZ-2C seems reasonable.
Which makes me wonder... perhaps another interpretation is that this is a civilian hypersonic spaceplane-technology
test flight (like the Soviet BOR-5 suborbital mini-shuttle test flights) - that would make more sense with the use of the
space launch vehicle. I'm not saying that this interpretation is *more* likely than the military reentry vehicle one, but we don't know what the Pentagon is basing its analysis on and they are obviously going to lean to the military assumption  if there is any ambiguity. "Wu-14" looks like a US military designation to me (14th kind of launch vehicle from the site that the US military calls Wuzhai), the Chinese bloggers are probably just riffing off Gertz, so I don't think we have any evidence either way for the exact nature of the payload.
Title: Re: Chinese sub-orbital launches

I'm not sure if it uses solid or liquid. I know the US version (DARPA's HTV) uses a Minotaur IV as the booster (which is in turn based on the Minuteman ICBM) and I just assumed that China would using something similar considering the very similar flight profile.

Given that the hypersonic technology is "DARPA hard", I'm really skeptical about this being any sort of commercial activity. I haven't seen anything like this from any of the US commercial spacelaunch companies, so it's really hard to imagine it coming from a Chinese company.

Most likely the US assessment is based off the flight profile. It would be pretty easy for them to track the rocket launch and then the hypersonic glide using IR sensors. And that is a very unique profile that sets it apart from space launches as well as ballistic missile tests.

I wasn't saying commercial, but civil government space, with the glide portion representing a space shuttle reentry - not clear to me that is set apart from the weapon profile.

And DF-21 is solid, AFAIK the only liquid large vehicles in use are the Long March series.

I'm not sure there is such a thing as "civil government spaceflight" in China, but in any case my impression is that this is a noticeably different sort of "glide" from either the Shuttle or something like the X-37B. From what I've been told, it more or less "skips" through the upper atmosphere to try and maintain altitude instead of moving along a smooth, constantly descending glide path. Another clue that they are different is that a re-entry glide is  basically a solved problem whereas this hypersonic glide seems to be very difficult.

But honestly, it's hard to tell for certain given the limited information available.

And DF-21 is solid, AFAIK the only liquid large vehicles in use are the Long March series.

Right - I mentioned the DF-21 because I assumed the Chinese would be using a solid booster for this application like the US is with the Minotaur. Was there a reference to them using a liquid booster somewhere that I missed?

Impressive piece of analysis so thanks for posting the link.

The implication of booster failure makes no sense at all. All existing long-march series vehicles have almost identical first and second stages, differing only by slight engine variants or tank stretches. But the Chinese performed a launch (http://forum.nasaspaceflight.com/index.php?topic=34397.0) the day after this test! That's not enough time to even find the cause of a failure, nevermind fix it.

Less sense than the Chinese intentionally dropping a booster with a bunch of hypergolics on board in a populated area, well outside of their published notams? Within view of a luxury resort where people would take pictures and post them on the net?

That depends on the failure. It might have been obviously connected to something specific to the test.

An obvious possibility is a fairing failure  - if the (very mission specific) nose crumples, the rocket is toast but
it's clearly not a rocket issue

Was there a Chinese space launch May 23?

http://www.wantchinatimes.com/news-subclass-cnt.aspx?id=20150526000061&cid=1101
On May 23, internet users from different parts of northwestern China including Ningxia, Shaanxi and Inner Mongolia said they witnessed an unidentified flying object in the sky, with many suspecting it to be a new spacecraft or missile, reports state-run Global Times. The event took place the night of May 23.

No videos. Still might be an a/c contrail.

Sounds like a missile test to me given the list of places, and that the contrail seems to be towards the NW. Someone might check the NOTAM for that day to clear things up.

Hey guys,
I really doubt the plausibleness of such report, which reads as:

"According to sources in China citing several witnesses, an ICBM was successfully tested for the fourth time on August 5 2015. If the reports are accurate, this means that..."

There are no other report on this with independent source - at least to my knowledge - not to mention whether the sources/witnesses are accurate. No report from Washington Free Beacon, which may have direct intelligence feed from the pentagon.

Firing an ICBM into the sky is not something easy to conceal; DF-41 is a solid motor design with plume highly visible on the ground. We haven't seen any amateur photo of plume or 'UFO' either.

*update*
yes now the Free Beacon report ::)

Does anyone know what ZF stand for? I guess DF is for Dongfeng, which is relatively obvious.

Gertz' headline overstates the "confirmation" of the test, but that interview makes it very clear that China is absolutely developing kinetic hit-to-kill technology to take out exoatmospheric targets.

From Google translate:

Quote
Zhou Derong said atmospheric interceptor missile hit a kinetic interceptor missiles, rocket-propulsion systems and as a kinetic kill vehicle warhead composed tremendous kinetic energy generated by means of high-speed flight warhead by direct collision to destroy military targets outside the atmosphere weapons systems, mainly used to intercept ballistic missiles and other military targets, such as satellites. Kinetic energy interceptor missiles outside the atmosphere the key is whether the kinetic kill vehicle to the target height, can accurately capture and targets. There are six key technologies: First rocket propulsion technology, and second, capturing precise steering characteristics of the signal information technology goals, the third is the processing seeker information and high-speed signal processor technology, the four is to determine velocity kinetic kill itself and the attitude of the inertial measurement unit and technology, five are used to calculate kinetic kill vehicle guidance and flight path correction calculation of high-speed data processor and technology, six are making rapid mobility of kinetic kill vehicle attitude and orbit control systems and technology.

"China conducted another flight test of its newest and longest-range intercontinental ballistic missile last week amid growing tensions with the United States over the South China Sea.

Pentagon officials told the Free Beacon the flight test of the new road-mobile DF-41 missile took place Tuesday with two multiple, independently targetable reentry vehicles, or MIRVs, that were monitored in flight by U.S. military satellites and other regional sensors."

Good point. But not that near Danzhou, if the NOTAM at http://www.chinaspaceflight.com/sounding-rocket/2016-04-27.html is to be believed:  19 31 N  109 07 E near the town of Xifangcun.
There's really not much near those coordinates, but a sounding rocket site doesn't have to be big.
There's a location at 19 31 49  N   109 07 26 E which has something that could be the assembly
building and the antenna seen in the background of some of the pictures. It's been substantially
developed since an earlier Google image in 2003 and indeed the only picture I have of the ZN-1 launches
show a mobile trailer and a very bare site.

Yes, I can confirm that it is the launch area of the facility. If you follow the way eastwards beyond the highway you will find the administrative area of the facility at 19.528639°N, 109.133598°E. Tracking antennas are located in north-eastern direction at  19.557770°N, 109.141760°E. Finally it should be said that Xifangcun belongs to the city of Danzhou. It is the reason why the whole facility is sometimes referred as the China Academy of Sciences Hainan Danzhou Sounding Rocket Unit.

I haven't figured it out - stage one looks like the booster of the Tianying-3F sounding rocket.  But it might be also the booster of some large anti-aircraft-missile (like several western sounding rockets, too). I need to dig a little bit deeper into Chinese missiles.

Maybe a (variant of) TY-7 sounding rocket. Only one simplified image is available.

Were there any notices that indicate some kind of launch out of TSLC at around 12:00 UTC today? There are multiple reports over the Chinese social media (from Beijing, Taiyuan city etc.) of what looks like a rocket/missile launch around that time that was seen all over northern China. Speculations out there seems to point at a sea-based ABM test.

Yes, it looks like the planned peak altitude was 40 km, with actual being about 37 km. There also seemed to be a large deviation in the Z axis at 200 km downrange.

Article about the launch:

Note: given the graphs above, it seems that altitude and downrange distance are mixed up in the article.

From Xinhua:

China has successfully developed and tested its first hypersonic experimental waverider vehicle. After separating from a carrier rocket, #StarrySky2, which rides its own shock waves, maintained ultrafast speeds above Mach 5.5 for 400+ seconds and reached Mach 6 (7,344 km/h).

XK-2 was launched very likely from as the same location as OS-X on May 17th, i.e. from the sounding rocket range near the Alxa airport (see https://forum.nasaspaceflight.com/index.php?topic=43696.40). I found some footage from a XK-2 launch video which helps to localize the position of the launch pad and the camera.
Another open question is who operates this rocket range. Maybe it is under administration of the Jiuquan Satellite Launch Center which supports launches from Alxa with its tracking and control facilities. Another option is that the rocket range belongs to the Huayin Ordnance Test Center (the former Base 32) which operates  a large distance weapon test range north of Alxa.

IHS Janes community thinks both because the Alxa site (multiple now airports use that name in the province) used to be home silos.

Thanks to the available OS-X1  launch video  made by the Jilin-1 satellite on Sep 7th, it is now possible to locate the suborbital launch pad (which is very likely also the launch pad for SQZ-1Z two days before) at 41.272869°N, 100.297910°E. Pic.1 shows 3 images from the footage and their corresponding location in a Google Earth JSLC Map. Take care that in the launch video the north direction corresponds about to the lower site. The launch pad for both missile launches is about 900 meters southwest of Site 3 Launch Test Station  (or Launch Complex A according to the former CIA designation). In recent images (Pic.2 top)  the launch pad is nearly not visible, but in historical images of July 2013 and before (Pic.2 bottom), the circular pad is clearly to see. Maybe this is due to camouflage measures starting in autumn 2013.
The launch video also indicates an exactly westwards launch direction.Together with the known flight distance of 169 kilometers a landing zone can be assumed (Pic.3).

Nice video of OS-X1 launch from Jilin-1:

https://gbtimes.com/amazing-footage-of-chinese-rocket-launch-captured-by-orbiting-chinese-video-satellite

Impressive the "super-resolution" capabilities of the observing satellite (~7 deg movement in the sky during the 10 secs of still video).

It's a nice video, but was it really taken from a satellite?  In 24 seconds of video, the satellite would have moved ~180km, with about a 10 degree change of viewing angle - which is not apparent in the video.  Were any of the Jilin satellites in a position to have captured this imagery at 04:10 UTC on 7th September?

There was a missile test or something like that happening at around 11:00 UTC today over northern China:

A4312/18 - THE SEGMENT JIAYUGUAN VOR 'CHW' - NUKTI OF ATS RTE V67 CLSD. 11 OCT 10:35 2018
UNTIL 11 OCT 11:10 2018. CREATED: 10 OCT 14:21 2018

.....which caused lots of "rocket nebula" observations over northern China after sunset. There was even a drop zone notice in Fugu county, Yulin City, Shannxi, China (roughly 39°04' N 110°50' E) alerting of "stage dropping" between 10:50 and 11:10 UTC!
So this has nothing to do with the Soyuz.  :)

Why they are calling a boost glide vehicle a plane in this news article is anyone’s guess.

Chinese hypersonic nuclear aircraft creates plumes of light during secret test flight (https://metro.co.uk/2018/10/12/chinese-hypersonic-nuclear-aircraft-creates-plumes-of-light-during-secret-test-flight-8031379/)

Quote
Although officials in China have yet to confirm the latest round of testing, Chinese military bloggers claim the eerie phenomenon was caused by the hypersonic glide vehicle which they know as DF-ZF.

Quote
As the DF-ZF’s test launches have all been from the Taiyuan Satellite Launch Center in North China’s Shanxi province – and because no other satellite launches were reported on the day – the sightings seem to corroborate suggestions that it was indeed the plane’s eighth flight test to date.

Note that these rockets have a maximum design apogee of 8 km, with a max achieved-so-far apogee of 1.2 km. So, not space rockets.

That is true. However, it worth noting that the study is very vague about the sounding rockets used and that it describes two sea trials from June and November 2017. It might be interesting to follow on its development in 2018 and forward.

"At 17:05:05 PM on February 5th, 2021, Zero One Space's new intelligent suborbital rocket OS-X6B and "Chongqing Two Rivers Star", under the remote command of the company's Chongqing Liangjiang Measurement and Control Command Center, was launched from a Northwest launch site Successfully launched, the test load was successfully separated, and the whole flight was normal. It completed two major test tasks, including the key technology of the Linglong series carrier rocket, a new space load and its equivalent flight test key technology verification, and obtained a large amount of real flight environment data. The launch was a complete success.

The rocket has a total length of 9.4 meters, a flight time of about 580 seconds, and a maximum flying altitude of about 300 kilometers. PAD", intelligent test interpretation, the launch is completed within 10 minutes. This launch is also the first time for a private rocket company to explore controllable re-entry flight, man-in-loop space flight control, (upper level) redundant fault-tolerant control, and for the first time to realize fully autonomous remote command and control, remote control telemetry, and vehicle-mounted mobile launch.

Thanks to all relevant authorities, shareholders and all sectors of society for their support, encouragement and trust in Zero One Space. Zero One Space will always uphold the belief in fearlessness, inherit the spirit of two bombs and one star, gather aerospace technical talents, and devote themselves to aerospace and defense industry. Career service, forge ahead and struggle! "

I believe Boeing always attach their space planes to boosters, so it's not their philosophy anyways.

Supposedly what's special about this one is that it went to sub orbit with its own power, then glided afterwards. Wonder how big it is, and how high it went and also whether the YF-115 was has any modification for this application. The special announcement without any details or photo does seems to make it seem significant. As the saying goes, the less words the article has, the more significant the new.

Tansuo-1 suborbital rocket was launched today from the same launch pad as Kuaizhou-1s in 2012-2013.
So we've got two different Tansuo 1 rockets from two different companies, one in Jilin and another in Beijing, in just two last months of 2019. Well done the Chinese comrades.

A paper on Chinese (and ROTW) hypersonic flight testing. Unfortunately I have not yet been able to download it (download stops at a handful of Mb).
http://ams.cstam.org.cn/EN/abstract/abstract157608.shtml#

Quote
Boundary layer transition (BLT) can cause a sharp rise in heat flux and skin friction, which can seriously affect the flight performance and safety of hypersonic flight vehicles. Therefore, the mechanism, prediction and control of transition have become important issues that must be dealt with for the development of advanced flight vehicles, and it is also a research hotspot of particular interest to major aerospace countries. Compared to other transition research approaches, the model flight test can better present the transition problems under real flight conditions, thus has been carried out extensively over the past 30 years. The United States, Germany, France, Australia, and other countries have carried out transition research based on flight tests, such as the Pegasus wing-glove crossflow transition and the HyBOLT transition control flight test of the United States, the joint research project of the HIFiRE-1 circular cone and the HIFiRE-5 elliptic cone transition flight test between the United States and Australia, the flight test of compression surface transition of the scramjet forebody (LEA) in France and so on. Although these flight tests suffered various setbacks, they still obtained valuable transition data. Recently, the United States is carrying out the concave-surface transition flight tests of BOLT and BOLT-II. Since its first model flight test mission for verification purpose launched successfully in 2015, several hypersonic BLT flight tests have been conducted by CARDC (China Aerodynamics Research and Development Center). The flight tests have measured valid transition data under flight conditions, obtained the transition front and its dynamical variation on blunt cones at various angles of attack and a lifting body HyTRV (Hypersonic Transition Research Vehicle). The crossflow traveling waves in high-altitude flight were measured for the first time, and our understanding of hypersonic BLT has been greatly improved.
