Available Space 3D “printable” models
« on: 07/08/2012 06:21 pm »
Seen some great space models available for 3D printing.   Thought a thread to document what might be available is warranted.

Wish to help out, join in?  See "Looking for Picture takers to assist 3D model makers"

Just to clarify the models I’ve listed go beyond NASA models. As many people don’t understand thingiverse.

As this example shows   http://www.thingiverse.com/thing:10109
The exhaust cloud of a Space shuttle launch. Inspired by the cloud of the last Atlantis liftoff.

I'm very pleased to list this next 3D printable project.

Started life as a Kickstarter project

http://www.kickstarter.com/projects/575960623/ardusat-your-arduino-experiment-in-space?ref=live

Now you can download the parts files and build your own models!
http://www.thingiverse.com/thing:27274   ArduSat

http://www.thingiverse.com/thing:27300   ArduSat - The Arduino CubeSat Satellite (full scale model)

This is a full scale (moderately simplified) 3D printer-ready copy of the ArduSat, the wildly successful Kickstarter.com satellite for personal space exploration (received $106,330 funding, 3X their original goal!).

New WIP Mars Curiosity Rover

http://www.thingiverse.com/thing:27908

This one looks like it will have a great deal more features and detail.

Future Plans:

"I'll update the picture with this latest version as soon as I print all the latest parts. Send me a good one and maybe I'll use it!
I'd like to make a better wheel attachment system that allows the wheels to spin freely and securely.
Working rocker-bogie?
More accurate"

I feel like I should link to this model of mine. I've been debating making it available for sale, but I keep getting visions of cease and desist letters, which is not exactly the kind of notice I'd like to get from SpaceX.

I need to print a new copy of my own, I left mine in a Fridays a month ago. I've been trying to also mock up a trunk to go with it, preferably one that if separate so they can be displayed together or independently.

Thats beautiful design work.  If you did it yourself in a CAD pkg or Art SW its yours as "ART"

If you wish to protect your work you can sign it so to speak.   Put your name or handle or something inside say the heat shield or something.

If you want to make a few dollars off each design look into this firm and see you can buy and sell this way.  http://www.ponoko.com/make-and-sell/sell-eps

If you have any more feel free to post or email me if you wish.

I can sell through Shapeways too--I push a button in the backend to make it available for public sale, set a premium I want to make on the model, and a little "add to cart" thing shows up in the linked page. For there, people send Shapeways money, Shapeways send the printed piece to them and the premium to me.

I may update the model a little (add some linkpin holes for a future trunk model, thin the walls a bit more to reduce volume and cost), then do just that. Would anybody be interested in buying one if I did that?

How about you post (when finished) a picture before you put it up for sale?

Great thread. I hope to attend the Maker Faire here in NY that is coming up. If I see anything good 3D space models I'll take pics to post (and maybe links to the designs)
...water is life and it is out there, where we intend to go. I believe that this nation should commit itself to achieving the goal, before this decade is out, of landing a man or machine on a body such as the Moon and harvest a cup of water for a human to drink or process into fuel for their craft.

Have a bunch of updates available

One is a tribute for Neil Armstrong done by 3D printers.

Had some mixed feelings posting this in the Neil Armstrong thread, and some time has passed so this is the proper place IMHO.
