Lockheed Martin Celebrates 50 Years In Space With Thousands Of Students On Space Day
ARCHBALD, PA, May 3, 2007
Marking half a century of space exploration this year, Lockheed Martin [NYSE: LMT] embarks on a mission this week to prepare the astronauts and scientists of the future. Lockheed Martin's Missiles and Fire Control facility in Archbald will engage 350 students celebrating Space Day(TM) on Friday, May 4, the global day dedicated to promoting mathematics, science, engineering and technology.
"As the Baby Boomer generation retires, the demand for young scientists and engineers is expected to increase at almost four times the rate of all other occupations," said Bob Stevens, Chairman, President and CEO of Lockheed Martin Corporation. "In 10 years, there will be a major work-force gap in technical industries if we do not strengthen the interest today's young people have in math, science, technology and engineering."
Missiles and Fire Control volunteers will visit Mid-Valley Middle School in Troop on Friday to provide students with posters, cardboard desk models of the Orion, an advanced crew exploration vehicle partnered with Lockheed Martin and NASA, and an interactive and entertaining presentation on the solar system. The presentation will feature 'Dr. Planet,' an entertainer, who specializes in teaching students of all grades about the solar system in fun and interesting ways.
Lockheed Martin Space Day is an educational initiative that inspires young people to explore careers in mathematics, science, engineering and technology and to realize the vision of our space pioneers. In honor of President George W. Bush's commitment to human exploration of the moon, this year's theme is Space Day 2007: 50 Years in Space ... and Still Havin' a Blast!
Space Day occurs every first Friday in May, people of all ages in the U.S. and around the world come together to advance education in these areas. Space Day is dedicated to the extraordinary achievements, benefits and opportunities in the exploration and use of space. The Space Day educational initiative was founded in 1997 and continues to be a major Lockheed Martin educational program.
Headquartered in Bethesda, Md., Lockheed Martin employs about 140,000 people worldwide and is principally engaged in the research, design, development, manufacture and integration of advanced technology systems, products and services.
