Mission-X: train like an astronaut in 2012

15 November 2011

ESA astronaut André Kuipers is inviting thousands of schoolchildren to perform physical activities and to learn about healthy nutrition to compete with teams from around the world to become as fit as astronauts. Mission-X kicks off again in February!

On Earth it is important to eat healthily and to exercise regularly whether you are an astronaut or not. For astronauts living and working in weightlessness, a balanced diet and physical activity are vital – two hours’ exercise per day is needed to keep fit.

ESA is teaming up with NASA as well as other space agencies and using space explorers as models to promote regular exercise and healthy nutrition among young people worldwide.

Expedition 30 has now begun.

It will be so nice to get back to science ops after what seems a long stand-down.

I like this crew so far.

Anton and Anatoli seem to have a good sense of humour which I haven't seen in all the cosmonauts.

What's interesting is that even with only three crewmembers, Expedition 29 still managed to meet the goal of 35 crew hours of science per week (although they didn't have any EVAs and only one VV). Begs the question though, could the 35 hours be increased with six crew aboard?

Maybe at this point, but big news items usually stand alone.

From ISS On-Orbit Status Report for 23/11/2011.

Conjunction Update:
NASA/MCC-H had tracked a conjunction with Object 31907 (Fengyun 1C satellite debris) with TCA (Time of Closest Approach) today, a four-inch piece of debris which at first was predicted to move into the red zone due to the disturbances introduced by the undocking and attitude maneuvers, yielding at first a radial miss distanced around 2,800 ft. Later, tracking updates led to downgrading of the probability of a collision. The Chinese weather satellite debris moved back into the Green zone, and the Shelter-in-Place (retreat into Soyuz TMA-22/28S) considered for the ISS crew was not required.

Russian Prop Transfer:
TsUP/Moscow-controlled propellant transfers continued, tonight at 9:06 PM-9:15 PM GMT, today from the FGB K2 tank to the SM BO1 oxidizer tank. No crew involvement required.

Flowers, adorning a console in the foreground, were sent by the Shelton/Murphy families for Thanksgiving in honor of the station crew members and the flight control team. The North Texas residents have been sending flowers to Mission Control since the first post-Challenger mission -- STS-26 -- in 1988.

I don't know what means "K2" and "K3" tanks. None of the sixteens FGB's tanks is called like this. In the previous status reports, NASA used real tanks names...

Is there a diagram of the tanks on FGB and Zvesda?  I'd love to see it.

I describe FGB's prop system, including its tanks, here. And schemes of the FGB are here.

From ISS On-Orbit Status Report for 28/11/2011.

CDR Dan Burbank pre-gathered required hardware items of the CUCU (COTS UHF Communications Unit) and restowed it in Node 2 for the upcoming (11/30) Combined Demo software update and checkout, which will involve the CUCU software and SpaceX "Dragon" CCP (Crew Command Panel) firmware, followed by a checkout of the changes. [For the new Dragon Combined Demo (Demo 2 & 3 being merged), "Commanding from ISS" via the CCP will be demonstrated while the spacecraft flies 2.5 km under the ISS.]
