The new footage was awesome, but I wonder what happened to the on ship SES-9 video? Did it get Falcon Punched on the deck? The Bulgaria-sat landing would have been good to see as well as some oh--no-no-no-no-YESS material. Oh well.

Yeah, really wish they had barge video of SES-9. But oh well, the rest of it is amazing.

Anybody know what this puff is, issued by F-9dev2 a moment before it detonates. Any gas thrusters that low on the stage?

It's likely either LOX vapor, water vapor, or small amounts of residual engine exhaust. If they were RCS thrusters, there would be a solid line of gas.

It's got over a million views now, but I suspect that's because a lot of us have been watching it over and over again.
The Space Age is just starting to get interesting.

It is a bit embarrassing how much time I have spent watching this video. A thought keeps popping into my head, how astonishing it is they got someone else to pay for all of the sophisticated hardware/ flaming projectile matter. Seeing the Dev2 footage vividly puts me back in the era before I fully believed landing the stages was possible.

I think it is the one in the video at 2:07 labeled "LANDING BURN FAILED."

Not totally sure.

Matthew

Edit: The one labeled "RAN OUT OF PROPELLANT" drops ten or twenty tons thirty feet or so onto the deck without holing it, so impact must have been something, could have wiped out the on deck cams.

It was SES-9 on March 4, 2016.

The landing failure occurred about eight-and-a-half minutes after launch, just as SECO-1 occurred.

You really have to give credit to a company that not only owns their failures but makes entertainment out of them.

It was also a good idea to include the two successful land and sea landings. :)
Some would probably question the PR wisdom of releasing a video of your failures, but even the 3rd or 4th time watching it, seeing all the explosions had me expecting to see another one and as a result, the successes seemed that much more impressive. ;D

Residuals from engine shut-down. At that particular point in the last flight of F9R Dev1 the engines had shut-down. Engines as in plural as it was the first flight of F9R Dev1 with 3 engines running on ascent.

It's likely either LOX vapor, water vapor, or small amounts of residual engine exhaust. If they were RCS thrusters, there would be a solid line of gas.

I believe their AFTS depressurizes the LOX tank and allows the common bulkhead to fail, mixing fuel and oxidizer which then do what fuel and oxidizer do best...  so the puff would be LOX.

Here's the crazy thing.  Every one of the orbital launches shown were successful!  The first stage landings were "experimental".

 - Ed Kyle

Even now that the landings aren't 'experimental', the data being returned from flown cores is 'experimental' and probably of great benefit to the orbital launch (payload delivery) reliability.  This new paradigm of operate, test, and iterative development is a strong engineering model indeed.

It's rather impressive how fast the whole development happened.

2011 - SpaceX announces reusable rocket development program for Falcon 9.
2012 - First Grasshopper flight test.
2013 - First landing attempt with Falcon 9 over the ocean (CASSIOPE).
2014 - First successful "ocean landing" (CRS-3).
2015 - First successful land landing (Orbcomm OG2).
2016 - First successful droneship landing (CRS-8).
2017 - Blooper reel released after 12 consecutive successful landings.

In the span of six years, it went from a concept to routine operation.
