China launches new mobile telecommunication satellite
Source: Xinhua| 2020-11-13 01:35:47

XICHANG, Nov. 12 (Xinhua) -- China successfully launched a new mobile telecommunication satellite from the Xichang Satellite Launch Center in southwest China's Sichuan Province on Thursday.

The Tiantong 1-02 satellite was launched at 23:59 (Beijing Time) by a Long March-3B carrier rocket.

Tiantong-1 is a satellite mobile communication system independently developed and built by China. It consists of a space segment, ground segment, and user terminal.

Developed by the China Academy of Space Technology, the Tiantong 1-02 satellite will establish a mobile network with ground facilities to provide all-weather, all-time, stable and reliable mobile communication services such as voice, short message and data for users in China and its surrounding areas, the Middle East, Africa and other related regions, as well as most sea areas in the Pacific Ocean and Indian Ocean.

Thursday's launch was the 352nd by the Long March rocket series.

CZ-11 with GECAM was deferred earlier this year to the end of the year so that would round out the three.

Gunter's Page has Tiantong-1 (01) and (02) launching on a CZ-3B/G3.

Do we know if the G2 or G3 version was used for this campaign?  How about for Tiantong-1 (03)?

Of course CZ-3B is a nasty vehicle, but for less poisonous Soyuz, I know at least three persons who watched and filmed its launch from 70 meters.

I'm still in doubt about this. Spaceflightfans.cn had G2.

CZ-3B/G3 has a 4.2 m fairing compared to CZ-3B/G2 with a 4.0 m fairing. That's only a 5% difference, so its hard to make out in photos. Attached are some images of the launch vehicle payload fairing. Doing some pixel counting, assuming a 3.0 m diameter third stage and excluding the two external wiring tunnels that go down the sides, I get a diameter for the fairing of 4.2 m. Also, an interesting photo showing workers surrounded by toxic gas!

This previously said G3 and was changed after the Launch after PM'ing Satori regarding the schedule not matching this thread. I did not receive a reply but can be assumed theat the change was the result of a request for verification.

This source indicates that the Long March 3B (Y35) rocket that launched the Tiantong-1 (01) satellite is a third configuration rocket. I think the Long March 3B (Y73) Tiantong-1 (02) rocket is also the third configuration.

By pixel counting also get a 4.2 fairing, therefore it is likely a G3
