Space Stamps
« on: 08/17/2020 03:38 pm »
Hello! I've been collecting stamps for years, but only recently I focused on space stamps, an effort that still continues. I was amazed at the variety and things you can learn from space stamps, especially the older ones. I will try to present, here, in chronological order, those stamps that I have been able to get (it is very difficult to have such a large collection because some stamps are expensive or very difficult to get, and there are some little known varieties that are not even catalogued). Anyway, any comment will be very welcome.

The first one is the oldest one I have found with a space theme (astronautics) and that is related to rockets. It is a stamp published in Cuba in 1939, dedicated to a postal rocket mail experiment.

The next one is from 1948. It's a US stamp, commemorating the 100th anniversary of Fort Bliss, and we can see a rocket launch.

Monaco, in 1953-1954, sold a series dedicated to several transport vehicles. One of the stamps showed an idealized rocket.

In 1956 the seventh International Astronautical Congress was held in Rome. The Poste Italiane issued a stamp about this congress. Satellite launches were very close!

"The Pencil Rocket was developed by the Avionics and Supersonic Aerodynamics (AVSA) research group in the early days of Japan's space development. A prominent engineer on the project was Hideo Itokawa. The rocket was first launched on 12 April 1955. The dimensions were 23 cm in length by 1.8 cm in diameter, weighing 200 grams."°

The second stamp, issued on the same day, commemorated the 100th anniversary of Tsiolkovsky's birth.
