R.I.P. Dex.  We lost you too soon.  Great memories and achievements you left for us.  Our hearts and prayers go out to the Poindexter family and NASA family also.

He was an excellent commander who set the tone of relaxed, friendly competence for his crew.  One of the good guys.

We didn't want to rush something on, it'd of been more about the accident and that's not right for this site. With the NASA quotes, it was viable to report and talk about his missions.

So Chris Gebharbt has reviewed his missions in brief and we've mixed in the quotes to create a short article that is respectful and celebrates his role with NASA and the orbiters.

Class act, guys.  Well done.

On behalf of the British Interplanetary Society in the UK, we pause to give heartfelt condolences to the family and close associates of Alan Poindexter. Respected as a can-do professional, he made his contribution to the US and to human space flight in a way very few are able to accomplish. Remembered by the global spaceflight community, 'Dex' was a remarkable human being, a well respected ambassador of his chosen profession.

Very sad.

A class act move to put on an article with no L2 promos (I'm a very happy L2 member).

RIP DEX.
So glad to strap Dex into the Orbitor for both of Dex's flights. He will be missed he was part of our KSC family. I can still see him looking with his thumbs up out of the commander window as we left the 195ft level for STS-131. So long my friend we will meet again.

Very emotional to see one of the Closeout guys post. I remember him coming for the flow brief (before the TCDT when OV-103 was still in the OPF) and he wanted to know every inch of Discovery. They always do, but he really cared about her as he knew they had to respect her to ensure she treated them right in return.

RIP.

I saw STS-131 launch in person from the causeway at the KSC on April 5, 2010. It was my very first rocket launch of any kind, and man was it an astonishing sight. Discovery looked like a star rising from the ground in the pre-dawn darkness. It makes me very sad to learn that the man who commanded this flight has died. RIP Mr. Poindexter! Thank you for putting on one hell of a show for me and the thousands of others who stayed up all night!

I had the honor of meeting Alan Poindexter during the "Welcome Discovery" ceremony at NASM. I had to drive a co-worker to his car off site shortly following the ceremony. Before the ceremony, we had met and talked with about 10 out of the whole group of astronauts that we're attending the ceremony. My goal was not only to cover this event for my publication, I also wanted to interview as many as possible reflecting back on their experiences. Long story short, I was contemplating whether or not to go back after dropping my co-worker off at his car 2 miles away. I'm glad I did return because I met Alan and spoke with him for about 10 minutes. I was telling him I had remembered him doing the commentary with the PAO on NASA TV during STS-100 when the crew were getting strapped inside Endeavour. I was complementing him on how he described in great detail what fellow astronaut Greg Johnson was doing inside the crew cabin, how he was helping them into their seats, ect. I'm glad I made the decision to return, otherwise I would not have had the opportunity to speak with him. I learned about the tragic accident after coming home from work Monday night, and it hit home hard! I just shook this mans hand and spoke with him in person for 10 minutes about 2 months ago.......
Very sad and my condolences to his family, fellow astronauts, and friends.
I will never forget meeting a true professional, a gentleman, and astronaut.
You will be missed......Godspeed!
