Go behind the scenes with the Rocket Lab team behind our Pioneer spacecraft. Designed, built, and integrated in Long Beach, California, Pioneer provides propulsion, communications, and attitude control to support Varda Space Industries' 120kg capsule on orbit and through precision re-entry. From concept to console, see how Rocket Lab powers the return of in-space manufacturing back to Earth.

The NASA Langley Research Center and Varda aerodynamics teams are working closely to expand our understanding of the stability of capsules through all phases of flight. This Transonic Dynamics Tunnel (TDT) has supported almost all American capsules, from Apollo through Orion, and now it's helping stress-test the Varda capsule design to further expand its capabilities. So far the Varda capsule has passed every test the TDT dished out.

And then there were 3. Thank you to @RocketLab, @SouthernLaunch, @SpaceX, and of course @AFResearchLab and @NASA.

Build. Test. Fly. Repeat. The more often we fly, the more quickly in-space manufacturing becomes just another link in the global supply chain. Varda has two more missions planned for 2025.

Look who was there to welcome the Varda Space Industries W-3 capsule back to Southern Launch's Koonibba Test Range a couple of weeks ago!

Purra's view from the ground would have been amazing as were the images of South Australia on re-entry!

Can you identify any SA landmarks? Bonus points if you know why there is a duck on Purra's head? 🦆
With sufficient thrust, pigs fly just fine - however, this is not necessarily a good idea. It is hard to be sure where they are
going to land, and it could be dangerous sitting under them as they fly overhead.

Big news from Varda today

We've been granted the first-ever FAA re-entry *operator* license

Meaning we are able to fly our fleet without needing a license on a per mission basis

AND we've shifted to our own in-house satellite bus with our next mission launching soon

RL are producing 4th bus, may fly on mission 5. Makes sense to use internal bus on mission 4, if there are any problems with it, won't delay mission 5.

I'm impressed with Varda business plan. Using Photon bus allowed them fly early while also concentrating their resources on capsule and robotic manufacturing. That proved technology and allowed them to start taking orders.
Building bus internally just makes financial sense, especially if they will be flying a lot. Eventually it will be replaced with capsule that has bus built in so everything is recovered but that could take awhile.

W-4 is healthy and operating nominally on orbit. Congratulations to the whole team on this achievement!

W-4 is Varda’s first flight using our FAA vehicle operator license, the first license of its kind issued under Part 450.

The W-4 capsule is equipped with Varda’s first homemade heatshield, but two of its tiles were made at NASA Ames Research Center. This flight will compare the two types of C-PICA—Varda's rapid flight cadence allows researchers to quickly validate materials in the extreme environment of reentry.

Seems like this satellite has failed in orbit, not confirmed by Varda yet.
In first 15minutes of video, don't have exact time stamp.

https://www.youtube.com/live/1uEh3IFbFus?si=c0C1MeBRy04A5n3l

RL built 4 satellites, 3 have flown successful. Varda are still sitting on 4th so they could use it for next mission #5. This will give them some time to resolve fault before flying #6 another Varda satellite.

May decide to buy another one or two RL satellites to give them more breathing room while refining their satellite. While RL satellites are good they will be considerably more expensive than inbuilt one and Varda needs to reduce costs.

Using RL early on was smart business move and has paid off. Manage to fly early and successfully which as proven technology and created customer demand.

That was based on this NASA description of Object AE being Varda sats, however as noted in the livestream, it was since updated to be unidentified. I would say it's more likely that it was mistaken identity rather than removal of factual information. https://nssdc.gsfc.nasa.gov/nmc/spacecraft/display.action?id=2025135AE

Still 47 unidentified objects from the launch.

W-4 continues her mission on-orbit happy and healthy. This is the debut flight of our next-gen, in-house vehicle, with fresh software and a new pharmaceutical payload. This week, W-4 received her second of three planned software upgrades, thanks to a team that never stops caring (or coding). When she returns to Earth, W-4 will bring back pharmaceuticals crystalized on orbit—another step closer to a thriving orbital economy.

Varda and United Semiconductors Announce Joint Development Agreement [Oct 31]

Quote
Varda Space Industries and United Semiconductors are pleased to announce a multi-flight joint development agreement to produce semiconductors in orbit for use on Earth.

 • Varda designs and builds autonomous reentry-capable satellites for material processing in microgravity. At Varda, we primarily use our W-Series reentry vehicles for our own pharmaceutical development, but due to their cadence and cost-efficiency, we are also able to accommodate payloads for a variety of uses and customers.

 • This partnership heralds the first example of a partnership between Varda and a company that has flown NASA-funded experiments on the International Space Station.

 • Varda has successfully completed three missions, and the fourth, W-4, is currently in orbit. A fifth mission will launch in the coming weeks and four more are expected to launch and return in 2026.

Through its work on the International Space Station and in its terrestrial semiconductor substrate foundry, United Semiconductors has developed a process for commercial orbital manufacturing of crystals for high throughput production of semiconductor materials for use in next generation autonomous systems, sensing, artificial intelligence, aerospace, and defense components.

[...]

Producing these materials in microgravity improves the quality, yield and reliability of the semiconductor devices, resulting in performance improvements that are impossible to achieve with terrestrial manufacturing.
