W3 is last one using RL satellite bus. W4 should be inhouse design, maybe larger with bus integrated into capsule. Varda needs it to be more reusable to reduce costs.

How much of this post is speculation and how much is sourced?
A search turns up nothing public on W-4
Gunters has a placeholder for W-4 but does not distinguish it from the first three.

Pharmaceuticals can be worth on the order of $100M/kg.
No spacecraft hardware is any substantial fraction of this.  Why consume down-mass with it?

Varda has flown the first mission on a $48M, four year contract with AFRL for reentry testing on the W-2 spacecraft from RL.
Why do they need to become a spacecraft builder?

What kind of wastrels would dump a perfectly good booster in the ocean after just one use?

Varda is developing a new series of spacecraft, named the VW Series (the “Spacecraft”), to facilitate rapid and cost-effective access to manufacturing in microgravity through its W Series reentry capsule. The Spacecraft is capable of being launched on any SpaceX rideshare mission, enabling low-cost access to microgravity in order to allow manufacturing of a variety of products in space. Built entirely by Varda, this is the first spacecraft specifically designed for the manufacturing and return of materials in microgravity. The Winnebago 4 mission will be the first flight of the VW Series spacecraft.

With sufficient thrust, pigs fly just fine - however, this is not necessarily a good idea. It is hard to be sure where they are
going to land, and it could be dangerous sitting under them as they fly overhead.

Making them reusable will solve this problem ;)

This STA is necessary to authorize communications for the short term Winnebago-4 Satellite Mission.

Develop flight heritage for on orbit manufacturing and subsequent reentry of a small spacecraft capsule, that will make a terrestrial landing under parachutes.

Operation Start Date: 01/01/2026
Operation End Date: 06/30/2026

Winnebago-4 is currently assumed to be launching on Transporter-14 in June, instead of January 2026.

After two successful missions, and a third upcoming, a thriving low Earth orbit economy is within reach for the first time. We wrote about our work to date, and how Varda is building the foundation to make this economy a reality.

Déjà vu? We must be running another @VardaSpace re-entry mission.

Our spacecraft operations team is at it again, executing re-entry maneuvers for our third Pioneer spacecraft to set Varda’s W-3 capsule on course for Earth.

Over the next few days, we’ll guide the capsule into its return trajectory. Stay tuned…landing’s coming! 🌍 Learn more: https://bit.ly/43mOqU1

Rocket Lab’s Pioneer spacecraft does more than just operate on orbit—it powers the future of in-space manufacturing. Supporting Varda Space Industries 120kg capsule with propulsion, communications, and attitude control, Pioneer executes a series of precision burns to return space-made manufacturing safely to Earth. Watch how we turn sci-fi into real-world re-entry.

Returning from space isn’t easy—but our Pioneer spacecraft makes it look routine.

Pioneer supports @VardaSpace’s 120kg capsule with power, communications, propulsion, and attitude control. Then, it executes a series of precision burns to line up re-entry, delivering the capsule on target, this time to @southernlaunch’s Koonibba Test Range in South Australia.

At 6:13 pm local time today, the W-3 spacecraft successfully executed its final orbital maneuver. The capsule will deorbit and enter the Earth’s atmosphere, experiencing hypersonic speeds exceeding Mach 25.

The capsule's parachutes will deploy once hypersonic reentry is complete and W-3 will land in the Australian outback. Unlike last time, this recovery will be during daylight hours. We expect to be able to share more information soon.

This may have been brought up before, but compared to the traditional capsule shape we're used to seeing, the W-Series really looks like it reenters backwards! Is that orientation stable, or do they just have very good attitude control? What's the benefit of having it reenter pointy-end down, as it were?

It's a pretty standard 45° Sphere-cone entry body.

Yeah, sphere cone is very standard and, I think in this case given the likely mass distribution, monostable.

W-3 mission lands successfully at Koonibba Test Range demonstrating Southern Launch’s capacity to support high cadence orbital reentries

The W-3 capsule touched down at 11:47AM local time after spending 61 days in orbit. The Varda capsule reentered the Earth's atmosphere at speeds exceeding Mach 25 providing a unique environment that offers researchers a chance to gather data for multiple applications.
