Author Topic: L2 Student Scholarship Program 2019 - Concluded  (Read 39649 times)

Offline Chris Bergin

Later this year we'll be starting the 2019 Scholarship Program. We've already got several scholarships paid for via kind lifetime members sending some extra cash lately (thus placed into scholarships), but we noticed last time around that it could have required a heads up so no eligible student misses out and we prioritize the ones who are current members and not one who sees the thread and sign up and say "me please" :)

This is the 2018 thread:
https://forum.nasaspaceflight.com/index.php?topic=46089.0

2019 thread will start in a few months.

OK, let's kick off this year's scholarships as we have a good amount of scholarships available. Won't be tweeting this yet, so that regular NSF folk who qualify get first in line. I know it'll take a while to get going as people will need to discover this thread, then I'll tweet it out.

Overview:

Several years ago we started offering students in the fields we cover 50 percent off L2 terms, a student discount. This is still in effect:
https://forum.nasaspaceflight.com/index.php?topic=37300.0

However, the discount was still not enough for some students, especially at the college (teenager) level who have no disposable income (and some have no access to a credit card I've noticed), so we also ran an idea where current L2 members (or any regular member) of the site could throw in a bit of cash and that would be converted into L2 scholarships.

That was surprisingly successful, with 50 L2 scholarships taken and the majority of whom are still regulars with the site today. Amazingly, it was one of those scholarships who then became a lifetime L2 member is his own right and asked about the option to sponsor a scholarship himself!

Combined with some long-term L2 lifetime members occasionally chipping in a bit more, which I will convert into scholarships to kick this off, we can start another round.

--

Becoming a L2 scholarship sponsor:

1) If you are a current L2 member (or otherwise) and want to sponsor a student, you can do so at the discounted rate. The scholarships are a 12 month term, but discounted at the student rate, so each $50 gets one scholarship. There's no limit to how many scholarships you sponsor, but one is amazing enough. Also, it goes without question you're again supporting the site via chipping it to cover its costs.

First, click here to enter our secure payment page. Enter the total that will cover the scholarship. Then send me a PM ( https://forum.nasaspaceflight.com/index.php?action=pm;sa=send;u=3 )to say it's for a scholarship and how you would like it to appear, such as username or real name, etc. (*you can also post in this thread).

---

Applying for a L2 scholarship:

2)If you are a aerospace (or related) student interested in a L2 scholarship, please post the following post into this thread.
a) Name (doesn't have to be full name, it's just better than just your username, given that may be "Sir Rocket-A-Lot").
b) What you are studying and which college/uni. )Verification is via your registered e-mail address (only I can see it in your profile, by the way), be it .edu or ac.uk etc.)
c) How L2 access would be useful to you.

--

Allocating student to sponsor will take a few days at most. You will see the response in here and via PM.

Questions can be posted in this thread too.

Had this thread on notify, so I'll go first!

My name is Quinn and I'm a high school (Grade 10) student living in Canada.
As I am still in high school, I'm not exactly "studying" aerospace yet, but I am certainly planning on choosing that (or a related) career path and am picking my courses appropriately.

I think L2 would be a great resource for me as I am intrigued by the technical things that seem to be in there. I think I could really learn a lot, and that would be a big help when I go into university and study those topics!
I'll also admit that getting the news before everyone else also seems like a nice perk  ;D

Most of all, thank you to Chris for starting this program and thanks to all the sponsors for giving students the opportunity to get L2! You're the best!

Hi all, my name is Konstantine, I am a sophomore studying Aerospace Engineering at the University of Illinois in Urbana-Champaign. Access to L2 would be useful to me not only because am completely fascinated by spaceflight and want to know as much about what is happening as possible, but also because it would provide me with some insight into the different aerospace companies which would help me better decide what type of working environment I might want to go to after college. Thank you all very much, I read the content on this forum several times a day, and it has been an invaluable resource in satisfying my curiosity when it comes to spaceflight.

Can UK folk get in too? I'm studying aerospace engineering in Manchester. I've not got a .edu address, that's some American thing, but do have my ac account as my e-mail here to verify!

I already find NSF really useful. I'm not going to claim L2 would be an amazing help as I don't know what L2 is like, but I gather it's great and every little helps! :)

Not really selling myself here am I :D

Oh and I'm Mike. Vike is my nickname.

Thanks for doing this! Missed out last year, but registered out of guest mode to catch this time around.

Andy, studying aerospace engineering. L2 would be great as it'll let me get ahead of the curve on new vehicles.

Hi everyone. Long time member, but now a student. I'm Bart, at Virginia Tech studying Advanced Math and hoping to apply it in the space industry. Let's all be honest, we would love L2 for all the cool stuff, but I see from previous L2 student threads people find it really info heavy and while NSF is great, more info heavy sections will be easier to follow and learn from.

Hi, I'm Paul

Currently I am studying computer science with a particular focus on cloud architecture and cloud based applications.

As it happens, I have a personal hobby of creating 3D renders and animations. I would use the information in L2 to help create awesome renders, infographics and animations of everything spaceflight related.

Thanks for everyone's consideration.
