Did they keep this quiet or have we simply not seen it being mentioned much before. Did a search on google and there's not a lot about this.

I've seen it mentioned, but nothing in terms of this amount of good info and quotes (re-wrote and structured an ESA release).

Interesting the re-use of existing Ariane technology. This is a strategy that NASA neglected for some reason, before the new SDLV program.
This is a market segment that I would have thought would be one of the first targets for commercial suppliers. NASA has been accused in the past of putting off the private sector by developing its own equipment for that area. Will the fact that it is ESA instead have the same effect?

Isn't ariane pretty much a private company anyway? It's definatly a rocket for hire company. ESA are the science people who are more involved with the payloads than the rockets...ie ESA are Arianespaces majour customer, but not the only one, I think thats right.

Arianespace remind me of Boeing or Lockmart. Do their own stuff but work closely with the space agency.
