Launch of Space Shuttle Endeavour - STS-97
« on: 05/20/2006 11:10 pm »
"This is a five minute exposure taken from the Causeway (about 7 miles away from the pad). Taken with a borrowed all-manual Nikomat camera, 24 mm lens, f/16, Kodak Royal Gold 100 film. When the exposure was stopped in this shot, the shuttle was approximately 229 statute miles downrange."

By the way, upon futher inspection of the picture :) Is it just me or can you actually see a color change where the throttle bucket occurs?

It is due to the SRB's buring out

What are the faint blue "trails" that seems to be falling from the plume?  You can see them in the middle of the photo.

This photo reminds me of one I saw where the ship took off at sunset and there was a full moon rising.  When the shuttle got high enough the sun was still "up" there so it cast a shadow and the shadow hits the moon square on.  Really gives a 3D feel for how things work.

I wondered about those trails too. Great shot, though! :)

This shot really illustrates the point at which the shuttle's acceleration and trajectory become more lateral in proportion to the earth.

The "trails" look like lens internal reflections, or "flare" to me.  They look like faint reflections of the main trail off the various lens elements.  If you look at the "large" version, there are whole bunch of them and they are exactly the same shape as the main trail.

That's a nice shot - started a conversation involving Newtonian physics, etc, here at the bar in Costa Rica.   ;)
