Kosmos 3M status
« on: 03/14/2006 04:20 pm »
Hello

Many many moons ago http://plestek.org or a website with similar url was still online. I remember reading back then (probably 2002) that the production line of the Kosmos 3M was closed at the Polyot plant in Omsk. Back then about 14 more launch vehicles were in storage.

In the mean time quite a lot of launches have taken place of the Kosmos 3M, about 4 or 5 a year. I believe the Kosmos 3M has quite a backlog of orders, for example the SarLupe for OHB system alone account for 5 launches.  Does anybody know about any plans to resume production or possible upgrades?

To clarify this matter there was a plan to resume Kosmos-3M production, but the Russian military opposed this and simply wanted all already produced Kosmos 3M launch vehicles to be expended, since Kosmos-3M used toxic propellant (http://www.russianspaceweb.com/cosmos3.html). Kosmos-3M was retired in April 2010 after 444 launches.

Successor version was to be designated Kosmos-3MU or Vzlet was to modernise and upgrade the R-14U derived launcher.
