The former ISRO chief claims India will be able to build an atmosphere across Mars without a problem and will soon be able to send half India's population there.

I'm still not sure what kind of stuff he smokes

Is Mars the name of a large region in India?  ;)

It seems that the launch of the TechSAR satellite from Israel in August will be postponed and that India plans to launch its own spy satellite instead:

http://timesofindia.indiatimes.com/India/Indias_first_military_satellite_to_be_launched_in_August/articleshow/2112524.cms

However, it is not clear whether Cartosat 2-A will be launched as a single payload of the PSLV or in combination with the previously for the Oceansat 2 launch announced secondary payloads. The launch sequence might change accordingly.

Once again this is a very strange report. Check the first post of this page... according to the ISRO Decade plan site the is no Cartosat-2A. And also if you see the ISRO 2007 report on Earth Observation Projects ( http://www.isro.org/rep2007/Earth%20Observation.htm ) there is no Cartosat-2A.

So, we can have one of the two... or the report is simply wrong or we are talking about a new satellite, one that has been kept secrete until now... It looks like this is a purely military project with pure militarty aplications.

With your second speculation you are right. The following link answers several open questions about Cartosat-2A which indeed is a secret spy satellite developed as a common Indian/Israeli project in exchange for the launch opportunity of TECHSAR/Polaris on PSLV:

http://www.domain-b.com/aero/June/2007/20070611_military.htm

"India's armed forces are set to get their first dedicated military satellite this August, when the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) launches the Cartosat 2A along with an Israeli satellite, Polaris, and a cluster of six Canadian micro-satellites from a Polar Satellite Launch Vehicle (PSLV) from Sriharikota. The Cartosat 2A will be a military version of the Cartosat 2 satellite launched by ISRO in January this year."

"According to reports, the Cartosat 2A will carry an advanced synthetic aperture radar (SAR) made by Israel and a digital camera with a resolution of less than one metre." "The digital cameras on board Cartosat-2A will be far superior to those currently available with India's dual use, photo imagery satellites, such as the Resourcesat-1 and the Cartosat 1 & 2."

According to the following source the launch of the G-Sat 4/Tauvex-2 payloads will happen on board the GSLV Mk-2 (D-3) in March 2008. Instead the Insat 3-D weather satellite may be launched on GSLV Mk 1(2) (C-2).

The launch of Oceansat 2/SRE-2 on a PSLV launcher should happen not before February 2008, probably in April 2008;).

At this time the Indian launch schedule is very confusing. All the reports indicate the Cartosat-2A launch with the Polaris Isreali military satellite.

I think we will have to wait for any info comingo from ISRO about this schedule (at this time I didn't saw any oficial confirmation for the 2007 remaining launch schedule). We may have two launches: one with a GSLV and another one with a PSLV, and I'm not sure if the Oceansat-2 will be launched this year. If we take into account the last post about this (from Dieter Kaemmer), Oceansat-2 will be launched in 2008.

Good to have you on board ISRO-watch. Any mention of the SRE-2, because that one seems an important stepping stone for India's future manned programme?
