Damn. What about the ISS?
Handover to Russian mission control, small rideout crew of flight controllers and support crew to stay at JSC and ISS specialists in place at another centre (can't say) in case of an incident on the ISS.

All the best. Too early to say where Rita will hit land though. We sure knew where to place our facilities!

Yeah, if Rita does end up just to the S of Houston at landfall, JSC could be in trouble. Not so much from wind (though 100+mph winds will do quite a bit of damage), but from the high storm surge - possibly in excess of 15-20 feet if the pressure stays near Cat 4 strength. There'll also be 15-40 foot waves riding on top of the storm surge height.
If landfall is further S near Corpus Christi, the Houston-area danger will be more from strong winds, random tornados and lots and lots of rain.

JSC has handed over the ISS to the Russians. They're getting out of the place.

...and getting even stronger - latest pressure now down to 904mb (Katrina's lowest was 902), max Vortex flight level wind speed now 181mph.
The latest computer model runs have shifted a bit North again, almost right over Houston/Galveston.

Bloody hell. This sounds like a beast and has more warm Gulf water to play with. Someone noted that it should slow down a bit before hitting land, is that correct?

Let's hope the NASA folks who are remaining there stay safe.
Aren't the Shuttle/ISS control rooms in upper floors? Hopefully they'll stay fairly untouched. Anyone know about the data processing facilities?
I also hope the JSC museum and displays don't get ruined.

JSC is 16 feet above sea level. Katrina's storm surge was 20-30 feet. Not good.
Let's hope it hits south of Corpus Christi.

Looks like it. They say it should slow down a bit, but will still be a major hurricane.

That little island near I-45 is Galveston Island. Texas City is leeward.
I've heard forecasters say it'll probably be a Cat 3 when it hits land.

We're pretty confident we're ok as there's no reports of 'major' flooding in that area. We won't know till we go back on Monday.
