The RV test is a big deal, although I suspect that the RV shown is a test article for ground-based ablative materials testing rather than an operational-type design.  They'll need to test a real one in flight next, though how an isolated North Korea pulls off a recovery I have no idea.  After that, we worry.   It should be quite apparent now that North Korea is not developing a satellite launch vehicle.

North Korea is developing BOTH SLV and ballistic missile. They are not the same.

I'll believe that when an actual functioning satellite is orbited.

The ICBM engine isn't connected with Kwangmyongsong 4, but since the story is on here ......

Could the ICBM be used as the basis of the reported lunar probe?

I don't see why not. The North Koreans have said they want an EELV class launch vehicle, referring to the Atlas V if I remember correctly.

Here's the KCNA press release on the engine test along with photos.

"Pyongyang, April 9 (KCNA) -- The DPRK succeeded in the ground jet test of a new type high-power engine of inter-continental ballistic rocket designed and produced by the scientists and technicians in its field of national defence.

Kim Jong Un, first secretary of the Workers' Party of Korea, first chairman of the National Defence Commission of the DPRK and supreme commander of the Korean People's Army, issued an order to conduct the ground jet test of a new type high-power engine of inter-continental ballistic rocket and personally came to the Sohae Space Center to guide the test.

He gave an order to start the test.

The moment the engine spewed out huge flames with deafening boom.

The results of the test proved that the high-power engine, designed and manufactured by the scientists and technicians in the field of national defence with their own efforts and technology in the Korean style, satisfied all scientific and technological indexes.

He was greatly pleased with the results of the test and highly praised the scientists and technicians for having brought about another epochal event in demonstrating the dignity and the inexhaustible power of the great Paektusan nation by putting into practice the intention and will of the party to adorn the Seventh Congress of the Workers' Party of Korea as a golden age in bolstering up the Juche-oriented national defence.

The great success made in the test provided a firm guarantee for mounting another form of nuclear attack upon the U.S. imperialists and other hostile forces and made it possible to have access to more powerful means capable of reacting to nukes in kind, he noted, adding: This is an eye-catching event which demonstrated our national defence capability before the world and another great victory achieved by our people in the drive for glorifying the Seventh Congress of the WPK with unprecedented successes.

Now the DPRK can tip new type inter-continental ballistic rockets with more powerful nuclear warheads and keep any cesspool of evils in the earth including the U.S. mainland within our striking range and reduce them to ashes so that they may not survive in our planet, he said, stressing the need to diversify nuclear attack means at a higher level to cope with the ever-more increasing nuclear threats and arbitrariness of the U.S. imperialists and thus decisively counter nukes in kind.

He expressed great expectation and belief that scientists and technicians in the field of national defence would give full rein to their inexhaustible creative efforts true to the party's line of simultaneously developing the two fronts and its plan for building the nuclear force and thereby bring about manifold changes in the development and production of Juche-oriented weapons and bombs capable of firmly guaranteeing the ever-lasting future of Kim Il Sung's nation and Kim Jong Il's Korea and remarkably reinforce the nuclear arsenal of the Supreme Command.

He was accompanied by Ri Man Gon, department director of the C.C., the Workers' Party of Korea, Jo Yong Won, Hong Yong Chil and Kim Jong Sik, vice department directors of the C.C., the WPK, and General Kim Rak Gyom, commander of the Strategic Force of the KPA."

New South Korean study of recovered debris from the February 7 North Korean satellite launch suggests there was no real satellite payload aboard, and the launch was testing missile technology with the 'satellite' claim only a deliberate camouflage.

Two objects have been tracked in orbit, so one is logically the final stage of the launch vehicle and the other is the satellite.   Bear in mind that the word "satellite" does not have a requirement that it is a functioning object, just that it is orbiting a "primary" object which in this case is the Earth.

BTW the Yonhap article does not deny that there was a satellite within the fairing, just that protection which are usual for operating satellites were lacking....

Is there any evidence as to what the payload fairing consisted of for the previous DPRK launches?  Is this a change from previous practice?

Three months after launch -- has anyone seen ANY significant evidence there's a live payload in orbit?

On 12 February the orbit was 472.6x508.3 km (average Earth diameter reference). Now it is 469.1x506.9 km, so it doesn't seem to have performed any orbit raising maneuvers.

We're all trying to figure out the secret plan behind all these activities [and in space, NO activity]. Is it conceivable in a hermit kingdom run by a murderous sociopath, there IS no plan, it's ALL for 'show'?

In a society that routinely turns off the lights at night, can't keep many/most of its citizens fed, and has hereditary 'democratic' leadership, I suspect they have some budget for rockets/ICBMs, but almost no budget for science.  So, yes, it's in  part for keeping up appearances.  Not unlike small dogs with many teeth.

Sigh.

After 4 months at sea - half of the NK launcher fairing was washed to Japan shores. The upper picture - the part in Japan The lower picture - the other half, recovered just after the launch by South Korea.

I apologize for necro-bumping, but this thing works.

EDIT;
In case you don't get point of this post, here's clarification;

On February 8th US claimed Kwangmyongsong-4 was tumbling and on 10th that it was stable, but that it wasn't trasmiting and on February 22nd Russian official confirmed that equipment on the craft is active/working/turned on.

February 28th independent astrologyst spotted Kwangmyongsong-4 and noted that it is stable and other one around same time too while also did some work and concluded that it is being controlled due to manuever of short descent.

North Korea released satellite images of THAAD site.
