AS for a silly thing to launch: How about the submersible James Bond car Musk bought a while back? As it is a submersible, it is already airtight, only needs a heat shield and can even drive back to shore after splashdown :D

No, this car is needed for rapid crew access to ASDS - drive off, wait for landing, drive back on.
Getting through max-Q for humanity becoming fully spacefaring

How about a giant unfoldable mirror that makes a great bright spot on the sky once in a while.. now that SpaceX works on retiring the iridium fleet that is responsible for the famous iridium flares. But I might also just confuse it with some stuff the russians already thought about.. https://arstechnica.com/information-technology/2016/02/russian-crowdfunded-reflector-satellite-aims-to-be-brightest-star-in-the-sky/

How about 60 nano sats.  Each with a battery, solar cells and a bunch of super bright LEDs.  Station keeping would take some development.  But for SpaceX, I'm sure a trivial problem.  Future advertising possibilities could fund ITS! :)

You want a nice payload for the Falcon 9 Heavy test?

Ok, try this for size:

3 000 000 ping-pong balls, each lightly doped with traces of elements that will radiate different colors when burning in reentry.

Pingpong balls are very light, cheap, easy to pack, of a suitable mass to make a great reentry style meteor streak, and have a low enough mass/surface area ratio that they will deorbit rapidly from anywhere even near LEO.   Drop them off at about 150km, and get a hemisphere full of colorful streaks with no danger to any space assets or to the ground.

Total volume is about 2/3 of the fairing space, total mass is a mere 8.1 tons, not counting storage mechanism.

It should make for quite the spectacle?

Well it worked during this year's Super Bowl halftime show.  Maybe Elon just leave a swarm of them in space and charge advertising dollars.  Now we can have company logos in space for all companies.  Who needs stinking billboards anymore.

I like the idea of a really large aluminized balloon that would orbit for maybe a month or two. It would be very bright and would de-orbit gracefully. How large could it be? Maybe a few hundred feet across? It could be filled with carbon dioxide or nitrogen from a small-ish bottle since it wouldn't take much pressure to inflate.

They could also send some of these Google Lunar XPrice probes/landers up with it.

Great , global warming balloons! That would be the headline if you filled it with CO2 (regardless of the tiny amount used here).

Is that Echo? The satellite used for the very first transatlantic TV transmissions? Just by blowing as much power at it as possible and receive the reflections for a brief transmission as long as it could be seen from both coasts? I watched that, though I forgot what they transmitted. It was something live.

And if it happened to be in orbit during the month of October and they used a pink-hued aluminum coating, they would get crazy kudos from the Breast Cancer Awareness supporters. Who wouldn't like to see a giant pink satellite orbiting for a month or two?

Musk did say something silly... I'm thinking half mile in size should be nicely visible.
Gotta get back to work.  Having way too much fun on this stuff.  ;D

Edit: Sentence that could be taken extremely the wrong way deleted.

You can see that in it "kneeled" position, the frame is down on the deck and the tracks are more proud.

Well of course they're proud, they know they're going to be making history soon

There HAS to be a story there. Why? Don't duck answering our questions....

So Elon said a silly payload would go in the Falcon Heavy to orbit. Let me guess: an enormous banner with signatures of all SpaceX employees. Or a preserved Commodore 64. (for some reason the C64 came to mind first, I had one in my youth)
I'll even excitedly look forward to "flags and footprints" and suborbital missions. Just fly...somewhere.
