Deserves own thread for the event and announcement(s):

At 7:00 p.m. CT on Thursday, August 25 at Starbase, SpaceX Chief Engineer Elon and T-Mobile CEO and President Mike Sievert will provide a public update announcing how T-Mobile and SpaceX will work together to increase connectivity.

Does anyone have any insight into this announcement?

With half of shell 4 at operational altitude I wonder if any mention will be given to laser interlinks now being turned on.  Or will it be only a T-Mobil SpaceX partnership presser....

Starlink will use some TMobile spectrum to give access to any phone ... if it can see the sky. ... beta late next year (on nextgen Starlink birds)... Text and SMS first...

Also offering to enable other carriers to use this with reciprocal roaming ("ubiquitious global connectivity")

TMobile to include this for free on many plans.

Starlink V2, launching next year, will transmit direct to mobile phones, eliminating dead zones worldwide

Note, connectivity will be 2 to 4 Mbits per cell zone, so will work great for texting & voice calls, but not high bandwidth

New Starlink v2 antennas for connection to mobiles

https://twitter.com/jeff_foust/status/1562962369810010114

Musk said the antennas will be about 25 square meters in area, which would make them significantly smaller than the antenna on ASTís BlueWaker 3 prototype (64 m^2). No data on reflectivity, though.

I received a lot of comments about the satellites not technically being downsized because the letter doesn't say it word by word but today Elon explained these would be "Starlink v2 mini" aka downsized Starlink v2 satellites that can fit on Falcon 9 if Starship is too delayed.

Eric Berger asks about V2 on F9. Elon says too big, but looking at V2 mini for F9 if Starship is delayed more than expected. V2 is very much for Starship.

I don't the think the antennas themselves would be 25 square meters but the whole starlink dish with antennas would be 25 square meters. He said the V2s are about seven meters and the the antennas would fold out an additional 5 to 7 meters. For a total of 25 square meters per bird.

SpaceX and T-Mobile announcement is a big deal; first time Starlink has been offered as direct-to-cell capability. This will also make the launch of AST Space Mobile's Blue Walker demo satellite on a Falcon 9 later this year a bit spicy.

This is quite a big deal, there are many usecases this will unlock. Also the ability to send an SoS while in remote areas will be great, even if EPIRBS will be more reliable, this would allow sending extra information about the emergency alongside. People have used sat phones for this but they are expensive.

I expect the 2-4Mbps per sat will improve down the road as 3GPP are already working on upgrades to the 5G specification for future phones that will likely make the phone be able to take on some of the complexity from the sat for doppler shifts etc - https://www.3gpp.org/news-events/partners-news/2254-ntn_rel17

This is more of a threat to Lynk than it is to AST SpaceMobile, at least in the near future.  AST is higher bandwidth and already has partnerships globally.

Will a new handset be required for this, or will an existing 5g iPhone work?

Eric Berger got Elon to acknowledge "Starlink v2 mini" for F9 as an interim solution. We can probably assume that v2 mini doesn't have a 5x5m S-band antenna, and only the 7m Starship version will support handhelds. So that's one probable difference. Maybe neither v2 variant has a Ku/Ka-band antenna much larger than v1.5, and the only functional difference is handheld support.
