A trio of Ariane 5 launchers are now at the Spaceport

May 4, 2012 – Ariane Flight VA208

Arianespace’s ability to support the sustained launch pace for its heavy-lift Ariane 5 is being demonstrated once again as vehicles for the next three missions are now together in French Guiana.
 
Elements for the latest Ariane 5 were delivered to the Spaceport this week aboard the MN Colibri, which is one of two sea-going roll-on/roll-off ships that carry Arianespace launchers from Europe to South America.
 
This Ariane 5 will be used for a dual-passenger mission later in 2012 on Arianespace’s fourth heavy-lift launch of the year, which is designated VA208 – for the 208th flight of an Ariane family launcher.

 It will follow the scheduled May 15 liftoff of VA206, whose Ariane 5 launcher is in the Spaceport’s Final Assembly Building awaiting the integration of its JCSAT-13 and VINASAT-2 satellites; and VA207, set for June 19, carrying the Meteosat Second Generation-3 (MSG-3) and EchoStar XVII payloads.   The Ariane 5 for VA207 has completed its initial build-up in the Launcher Integration Building at the Spaceport.
 
Arianespace opened its 2012 activity with the VA205 Ariane 5 mission on March 23, orbiting the Edoardo Amaldi Automated Transfer Vehicle for servicing of the International Space Station.

Another Ariane 5 begins its initial build-up at the Spaceport


June 6, 2012 – Ariane Flight VA208

The fourth Ariane 5 for launch by Arianespace in 2012 is beginning to take shape with the assembly start-up of this heavy-lift vehicle at the Spaceport in French Guiana, which will orbit a dual-passenger payload later in the year.
 
During activity inside the Spaceport’s Launcher Integration Building this week, the Ariane 5’s core cryogenic stage was removed from its protective shipping container and raised into position over one of two operational mobile launch tables.

 This step cleared the way for rollout of the two solid propellant boosters, which will be mated to the core stage.  It is to be followed by integration of the cryogenic upper stage and vehicle equipment bay – completing the basic assembly for this Ariane 5 ECA version of Arianespace’s workhorse launcher, and enabling a subsequent transfer to the Final Assembly Building for payload integration. 
 
This upcoming flight, which is designated VA208, will mark the 208th launch of an Ariane family vehicle since the maiden liftoff of an Ariane 1 version in 1979.

A milestone in launcher preparations for Arianespace's fourth Ariane 5 flight of 2012

June 14, 2012 – Ariane Flight VA208

Initial assembly of the fourth Ariane 5 for launch by Arianespace in 2012 has been completed at the Spaceport in French Guiana, marking a new milestone in preparations for a mission to loft a dual-passenger payload later in the year.

The heavy-lift Ariane 5 ECA version is located in the Launcher Integration Building, where it took shape during a multi-step process that began with positioning of the vehicle’s cryogenic core stage over the mobile launch table.  The two solid propellant boosters were then mated to the core stage, followed by a “topping off” installation of the cryogenic upper stage and vehicle equipment bay – which were pre-integrated as a single component.

This is the 64th Ariane 5 to take shape at the Spaceport, and will continue the cadence with Arianespace’s workhorse launcher.   Designated as Flight VA208 in reference to the 208th flight of an Ariane family vehicle, the launcher is to carry a two-passenger commercial telecommunications satellite payload – the primary mission application for Ariane 5.

The launch will follow Arianespace’s next Ariane 5 flight (VA207), scheduled to lift off on July 5 with the EchoStar XVII high-throughput relay platform for Hughes Network Systems, and the MSG-3 meteorological spacecraft for EUMETSAT (the European Organisation for the Exploitation of Meteorological Satellites).

The VA207 flight’s Ariane 5 currently is in the Spaceport’s Final Assembly Building, ready for integration of the EchoStar XVII and MSG-3 satellites.

Availability of the Spaceport’s separate Launcher Integration Building and Final Assembly Building facilities at French Guiana provides flexibility in Arianespace’s mission processing flow, and enables two Ariane 5s to be prepared in parallel.

The Spaceport maintains its mission cadence for Arianespace’s Ariane 5 flights

July 17, 2012 – Ariane Flights VA208 & VA209

The two satellite passengers for Arianespace’s next heavy-lift Ariane 5 mission are now undergoing final preparations at the Spaceport, while launcher components for the following flight have arrived in French Guiana – keeping up the pace to meet requirements of the company’s international customer base.

Arianespace’s upcoming mission is scheduled for August 2 with a dual payload consisting of the Intelsat 20 and HYLAS 2 telecommunications relay spacecraft.  This flight is designated Flight VA208 in Arianespace’s numbering system, representing the 208th mission of an Ariane family launcher since the maiden liftoff of an Ariane 1 version in 1979.

HYLAS 2 is designed with the latest Ka-band technology to deliver high-speed, low-cost two-way data communications for its operator, Avanti Communications.  Configured with 24 fixed beams and one steerable beam, the satellite will provide data capacity to an increasing range of telecommunications, enterprise and government customers in the fast-growing markets of Eastern and Southern Africa, the Middle East and across the Caucasus.

Built by Orbital Sciences Corporation, HYLAS 2 has almost three times the bandwidth capacity of HYLAS 1 – launched by Arianespace in November 2010 – to substantially increase Avanti Communications’ international coverage.

The Intelsat 20 passenger for Arianespace’s upcoming flight was produced by Space Systems/Loral for Intelsat, a leading provider of Fixed Satellite Services (FSS) worldwide.  This relay platform’s C- and Ku-band payload is optimized for high-power distribution of video, voice and data network services, with the spacecraft to replace the Intelsat 7 and Intelsat 10 satellites, which are co-located at 68.5 degrees East longitude.

As the Intelsat 20 and HYLAS 2 payloads are being readied in the Spaceport’s S5 payload preparation facility, the French Guiana site also is busy with launcher activity.

The Ariane 5 for Flight VA208 was transferred this week from the Spaceport’s Launcher Integration Building – where it was assembled – to the Final Assembly Building, where the Intelsat 20 and HYLAS 2 satellites will be installed atop the vehicle.  Its rollout opens the Launcher Integration Building to receive the Ariane 5 for Flight VA209, which was delivered from Europe to the Spaceport earlier this month aboard the MN Toucan roll-on/roll-off transport ship.

Both satellite passengers for Arianespace’s upcoming heavy-lift Ariane 5 mission are being readied for the August 2 mission from French Guiana, undergoing key steps of their final preparations in the Spaceport’s S5 payload processing facility.

The HYLAS 2 relay platform has received its propellant load in the facility’s S5B dual-function hall, which is capable of handling both satellite integration and fueling.  Separately, Intelsat 20 has been mounted on the cone-shaped adapter that will serve as its interface with Ariane 5, marking the first contact with launcher hardware during activity in the S5A integration hall.

Arianespace’s Ariane 5 receives its HYLAS 2 payload

July 25, 2012 – Ariane Flight VA208

Final payload integration has begun for Arianespace’s heavy-lift Ariane 5 mission set for August 2 from the Spaceport in French Guiana, with its HYLAS 2 satellite passenger now integrated onto the launch vehicle.

The spacecraft was positioned yesterday atop Ariane 5’s core section, which places it as the lower passenger in the mission’s dual-satellite payload “stack.”
 
HYLAS 2 weighs approximately 3,310 kg. for liftoff and was built by Orbital Sciences Corporation for Avanti Communications using a Star-2.4E platform. This satellite is equipped with 24 Ka-band transponders, and will provide high-speed, low-cost, two-way data communications to Europe as well as the fast-growing regions of Africa and the Middle East. It is the second spacecraft launched by Arianespace for Avanti, with HYLAS 1 successfully orbited in November 2010.

Also lofted with HYLAS 2 on this upcoming mission will be Intelsat’s Intelsat 20 satellite, which is to replace the Intelsat 7 and Intelsat 10 spacecraft in orbit, and provide a broad range of communication services for Europe, the Middle East, Russia and Asia.  When integrated on Ariane 5, Intelsat 20 will be in the upper position of the payload stack.
 
The upcoming launch from the Spaceport – designated Flight VA208 in the Ariane numbering system – will be the fourth for Arianespace’s heavy-lift workhorse in 2012. Ariane 5 orbited Europe’s third Automated Transfer Vehicle for resupply of the International Space Station in March on Flight VA205, and delivered the JCSAT-13 and VINASAT-2 spacecraft during May with Flight VA206. Earlier this month, the EchoStar XVII telecommunications platform and MSG-3 meteorological satellite were orbited by the heavy-lift vehicle on Flight VA207.

The Intelsat 20 communications satellite has joined its HYLAS 2 co-passenger on Ariane 5, marking a new milestone in preparations for Arianespace’s heavy-lift mission next week from the Spaceport in French Guiana.

Encapsulated in an ogive-shaped payload fairing, Intelsat 20 was lowered into place yesterday over the HYLAS 2 satellite, which was installed atop Ariane 5’s cryogenic core stage earlier in the week.

With the Ariane 5’s dual payload “stack” now completed, final pre-flight preparations will begin, including functional tests, a rehearsal and transport vehicle aiming. This will be followed by the launch readiness review and rollout of the heavy-lift workhorse to the Spaceport’s launch zone for the August 2 liftoff.

Weighing approximately 6,090 kg. at launch, Intelsat 20 was built for international satellite operator Intelsat by Space Systems/Loral of the United States, based on its 1300-series platform. This spacecraft will replace the Intelsat 7 and Intelsat 10 satellites and is to provide video, telephone and data transmission services for Europe, Africa, Russia, Asia and the Middle East.

Also being orbited on the upcoming mission is Avanti Communications’ HYLAS 2, which is equipped with 24 Ka-band transponders and will provide low-cost, high-speed data communications to Europe as well as the growing regions of Africa and the Middle East.

This flight marks the fourth for Arianespace’s heavy-lift launcher in 2012. Europe’s third Automated Transfer Vehicle for the International Space Station was orbited by Ariane 5 in March, and the JCSAT-13 and VINASAT-2 spacecraft were lofted during May. The EchoStar XVII telecommunications and MSG-3 meteorological satellites were orbited by the vehicle earlier this month.

Arianespace’s fourth heavy-lift Ariane 5 mission of 2012 has been given the green light for liftoff later this week following today’s launch readiness review at the Spaceport in French Guiana.

This procedure, which is performed before every Ariane mission, examines the “go” status of the launcher, its dual passengers of the Intelsat 20 and HYLAS 2 satellites, the Spaceport’s infrastructure and the ground tracking system network. With today’s successful review, the Ariane 5 is now cleared for its rollout tomorrow from the Spaceport’s Final Assembly Building to the ELA-3 launch zone, where it will be readied for a Thursday evening liftoff.

The Ariane 5 is to deliver a total payload performance of approximately 10,180 kg. – which includes the HYLAS 2 and Intelsat 20 satellites, along with hardware for the launcher’s dual-payload deployment system.

it is in final preparations for the  launch of the HYLAS 2 communications
satellite for Avanti Communications Group PLC.  Designed, manufactured and
tested at Orbital’s Dulles, VA satellite production facilities, the HYLAS 2

Following its launch and several weeks of in-orbit testing and systems
verification, the satellite will be placed into commercial service from its
final geosynchronous orbit position, providing data and video services to
Eastern and Southern Africa, Eastern Europe and the Middle East, and across
the Caucuses.

“HYLAS 2 introduces a new market application for Orbital’s commercial
communications satellites, bringing broadband communications into the range
of space systems we offer our customers,” said Mr. Christopher Richmond,
Orbital’s Senior Vice President of Communications Satellites.  “The HYLAS 2
spacecraft is one of the most sophisticated commercial satellites we have
ever built and we are looking forward to putting it to work for our Avanti
customer.”

About HYLAS 2

The state-of-the-art smaller-size satellite is based on Orbital’s proven
GEOStar-2 platform.  It carries 24 active Ka-band user beams and six
gateway beams and will produce approximately 5.0 kilowatts of payload
electrical power.  The Ka-band spot beams on the HYLAS 2 will provide
two-way communications services to facilitate high-speed delivery of data
to end-user applications such as corporate networking, broadband Internet
access, business continuity services and video distribution. The spacecraft
will be equipped with a steerable spot beam, also operating at Ka-band,
which can provide coverage anywhere on Earth that is visible to the
satellite.

Orbital designed, built and tested the HYLAS 2 spacecraft at the company’s

Ariane 5 moves to the launch zone for Arianespace’s next heavy-lift flight

August 1, 2012 – Ariane Flight VA208

Arianespace’s mission with the Intelsat 20 and HYLAS 2 telecommunications satellites is on pace for liftoff tomorrow evening, following its Ariane 5’s rollout to the ELA-3 launch zone today at the Spaceport in French Guiana.

Riding atop its mobile launch table, this heavy-lift workhorse was transferred to the launch pad from the Spaceport’s Final Assembly Building, where the Ariane 5 received its dual payload last week.  With today’s rollout completed, final countdown will begin for an August 2 liftoff at the start of a 57-minute window that opens at 5:54 p.m. local time in French Guiana.

Thursday’s flight will be the fourth Ariane 5 mission of 2012, with a total lift performance estimated at 10,180 kg. – which includes approximately 9,400 kg. for the Intelsat 20 and HYLAS 2 spacecraft, along with the launcher’s dual-satellite dispenser system and integration hardware. 

Riding as the upper passenger in Ariane 5’s payload “stack,” Intelsat 20 will be released first during the mission at 28 minutes into the flight, with HYLAS 2 being deployed 34 minutes after liftoff.

Intelsat 20 weighs some 6,090 kg., and was built for international satellite operator Intelsat by Space Systems/Loral of Palo Alto, California based on the 1300-series platform. Carrying a payload of Ku-band, C-band and Ka-band transponders, this spacecraft will replace the Intelsat 7 and Intelsat 10 satellites in orbit, and is to provide video, telephone and data transmission services for Europe, Africa, Russia, Asia and the Middle East.

Arianespace has begun the final countdown for this evening’s Ariane 5 flight from Europe’s Spaceport in French Guiana, which is to orbit the Intelsat 20 and HYLAS 2 communications satellites.

Liftoff is scheduled during a 57-minute launch window that opens at 5:54 p.m. local time in French Guiana, with Intelsat 20 being released 28 minutes into the flight and HYLAS 2 deployed 34 minutes after Ariane 5’s launch.

Intelsat 20 was built for international satellite operator Intelsat by Space Systems/Loral of Palo Alto, California based on its 1300-series platform. This spacecraft is outfitted with Ku-band, C-band and Ka-band transponders and is to provide video, telephone and data transmission for Europe, Africa, Russia, Asia and the Middle East.

The HYLAS 2 spacecraft was produced by Orbital Sciences Corporation of Dulles, Virginia using the Star 2.4E platform for European satellite operator Avanti Communications. Equipped with Ka-band transponders, this spacecraft will provide data capacity for telecommunications, enterprise and government customers in Europe, the Middle East and Africa.

Tonight’s mission will be the 64th Ariane 5 launch overall and fourth flight for Arianespace’s heavy-lift workhorse in 2012.
