TELEO payload for new generation optical communications

Eighth Eurostar satellite for Arabsat and first Eurostar Neo

Riyadh, 18 August 2020 – Airbus has been contracted by Arabsat, one of the world’s top satellite operators, to build BADR-8, their new generation telecommunications satellite. BADR-8 will replace and increase Arabsat’s capacity and augment its core business at the BADR hotspot 26°E.

The BADR-8 satellite will be based on the-state-of-the-art Airbus Eurostar Neo electric orbit raising platform giving access to a wide range of launchers.

BADR-8 will also include the innovative Airbus developed TELEO optical communications payload demonstrator. This payload will enable very high capacity analogue optical feeder link communications, as part of the development by Airbus of a new generation of optical communications technology in space to be integrated in its future commercial products, which is highly robust against jamming.

Jean-Marc Nasr, Head of Space Systems, said: “This important contract with our long-standing customer Arabsat has a special significance for Airbus Defence and Space. It is the first seventh-generation Arabsat satellite and the first Eurostar Neo satellite we are building for Arabsat after six previous Eurostar satellites. BADR-8 incorporates the best of our expertise and technologies, including a very innovative optical communications hosted payload. This further strengthens our continuing strategic partnership with the Arab Satellite Communications Organisation, which has been connecting people by satellite across the Middle East and the world for more than 40 years.”

Khalid Balkheyour, President and CEO of Arabsat said “We are delighted to sign this contract with our long term partner Airbus. It marks another milestone in our objectives to provide customers with premium satellite technology with the highest level of performance, and to expand reliability and service security. BADR-8 will be joining our Badr-network at Arabsat 26°E hotspot, expanding our service over EMEA region.”

The satellite is scheduled for launch in 2023 and its electric propulsion system will enable it to reach geostationary orbit in four to five months, depending on the type of launcher used. It has been designed to remain in service in orbit for more than 15 years. The satellite will have a launch mass of around 4.5 tonnes and power of 17 kW.

ARABSAT AND SPACEX SIGN CONTRACT TO LAUNCH 7A SATELLITE, FALCON 9 WILL CARRY ARABSAT 7A TO ITS ORBITAL POSITION 30.5 EAST

September 19 2022
Arabsat and SpaceX sign contract to launch 7A satellite, Falcon 9 will carry Arabsat 7A to its orbital position 30.5 East
Arab Satellite Communications Organization (Arabsat) announced today that it has selected SpaceX’s Falcon 9 to launch its new satellite, Arabsat 7A. Arabsat 7A is the first Arabsat 7th generation satellite and is considered one of the latest satellite technologies in terms of manufacturing, payload, efficiency of performance, and coverage flexibility. This announcement marks the third time that Arabsat has selected SpaceX for launch: first in 2019 with Falcon Heavy’s launch of Arabsat and SpaceX will also launch Arabsat’s BADR-8 satellite on Falcon 9 next year.

Al-Hamedi Al-Anezi, CEO of Arabsat, said, "We value our work with SpaceX. The signing of this agreement is an extension of the trusted relationship with SpaceX that has been built over the past few years since the launch of Arabsat 6A. Arabsat 7A will be one of Arabsat’s first software-defined payload satellites, offering high throughput Ku-band capacity to help Arabsat expand its services into several verticals to enhance its portfolio of products and solutions over the Middle East, Africa and beyond, to parts of Europe.”

“We’re excited to be selected for our third Arabsat launch,” said SpaceX Vice President of Commercial Sales Tom Ochinero. “Having worked together on the Falcon Heavy launch of Arabsat 6A and the upcoming launch of BADR-8, our work with Arabsat is a testament to our Falcon fleet’s reliability and safety.”

Airbus Eurostar Neo Arabsat BADR-8 telecoms satellite shipped to launch site

08 May 2023

Airbus’ latest next generation geostationary Eurostar Neo satellite Arabsat BADR-8 has been shipped to Cape Canaveral, ready for launch. The satellite will provide connectivity over Europe, Middle East, Africa, and central Asia and also features a world first Airbus’ innovative space demonstrator TELEO to provide space to ground optical communications at gigabit speeds.

Airbus’ relationship with Arabsat stretches back 20 years, and BADR-8 is the eighth satellite built for the leading satellite services provider in the Arab world.

The Airbus TELEO demonstrator will be used to validate technical scenarios and innovations for GEO to ground communications of the order of one terabit per second.

This TELEO demonstrator will also enable very high capacity optical feeder link communications, by nature highly robust against jamming, as part of the development by Airbus of a new generation of optical communications technology in space.

Arabsat’s BADR-8 satellite features increased payload capacity and more efficient power and thermal control systems and will replace and increase Arabsat’s capacity and augment its core business at the BADR hotspot 26°E in geostationary orbit.

The state-of-the-art Airbus Eurostar Neo Arabsat BADR-8 satellite features electric orbit raising technology and is the third Airbus Eurostar Neo satellite to be launched.

BADR-8 has been designed to remain in service in orbit for more than 15 years. The satellite has a launch mass of around 4.5 tons and it will deliver 17.8 kW of payload power. The satellite was transported to Florida on an Antonov An124.

Airbus’ Eurostar Neo platform has been developed in the frame of the European Space Agency's (ESA) Partnership Projects, together with the French space agency CNES, and strongly supported by the UK Space Agency and other agencies across Europe.

Airbus’ geostationary telecommunications satellites have clocked up more than 1,300 years of successful operation in orbit and are in service, or being built, for all of the world’s leading geostationary satellite operators.

Which first stage will be used for this launch?

The May 16 press briefing revealed Falcon 9 first stages are now cleared for use up to twenty times for Starlink launches. 1058.16 and 1060.16 are assumedly back in the rotation for such launches.

1076.6 (assuming successful recovery on May 19) and 1073.9 (April 19) will eventually undergo modifications to become the Falcon Heavy side boosters for Jupiter 3 (NET August), and will therefore not be available while that work is in progress.

Available first stages, with date of most recent recovery:
1062.14  Mar 9
1077.5    Mar 29 SpX-28
1073.9    Apr 19
1078.3    Apr 28
1069.8    May 4 (maybe)

Edit May 20: It's B1062.14.

What I heard on the Ax-2 FRR briefing sounded to me like the certification process to increase to 20 was in progress rather than "now cleared for use up to twenty times". The chances of this failing to achieve the certification may be low but may take a bit of time?

SpaceX set new record of  SLC-40 turnaround time - 121h 16m, 2h 22m faster.

Would this make BADR-8 be a candidate new record for shortest recycling of a pad?  By my math May 24th 3:25Z would be 117 hours after Starlink 6-3.

Particularly impressive if the two shortest recycles come back to back.
