The Lego Ideas Saturn V has just gotten approved. https://ideas.lego.com/projects/76841 (https://ideas.lego.com/projects/76841) Currently at 1 meter tall and 1176 bricks it will be interesting to see what the final form is.
-
Yes!! I voted for that one and very happy it is approved!
-
same, and same.... this is going to be a must buy for me...
-
Here's the Lego Ideas announcement of Saturn V being approved:

Suspect a lot of NSF members may be buying this. My son likes rockets and loves Lego so hopefully I can swing this as an educational purchase for him :D
-
I will be buying it when it comes out. When I built my Lego Curiosity Rover I had no idea it would make me want more Lego sets. Building Poe Dameron's X-Wing now.
-
I might go to Copenhagen just to get this.
-
The most powerful rocket ever flown is blasting off in LEGO bricks this June! #LEGOApollo #NASA
-
Nice! Here's higher-res version showing some clearer details.
-
Still happy about this !!!!
The question is how many copies to buy. I'll want several to keep for giving as gifts and one for me and one MISB and maybe some to hoard for later....
-

As a note, I don't think this comes with the service gantry, that was composited in....

Hey! Save some for the rest of us :)
My son really wants one of these, he just doesn't know it yet ...
I hope/assume they've retained the design feature of making the tanks visible within each stage. Look forward to seeing more details soon.
-
Excited for this!!! It will look good next to my shuttle and Chris Hadfield!!

What Lego sets are these?

The shuttle is an old set that is OOP, but with stickers I printed. Chris is a custom figure I ordered from here:

NASA Apollo Saturn V to launch as LEGO brick model set on June 1
http://www.collectspace.com/news/news-042817a-lego-nasa-apollo-saturn-v.html
The countdown is on for the launch of the LEGO Saturn V moon rocket.
LEGO on Friday (April 28) rolled out its first photos and filed its "launch plan" for its "NASA Apollo Saturn V" set to be released on June 1. The towering model — the toy brick rocket when fully assembled will stand more than 3 feet tall (39.37 inches or 100 centimeters) or about 1:110 the size of the mighty booster — is based on a fan submission on the crowdsourcing website LEGO Ideas.
"Build the first rocket to land people on the Moon!" the Danish toy company wrote. "Packed with authentic details, it features three removable rocket stages."

LEGO Ideas blog: https://ideas.lego.com/blogs/1-blog/post/137 (https://ideas.lego.com/blogs/1-blog/post/137)
Much higher resolution pictures on the collectspace page - thank you!
Edit: sorry meant to include this quote from the ideas blog
You'll be able to find the 1 meter high (approximately 1:110 scale) icon of space exploration in stores from the 1st of June, 2017 for a recommended retail price of just USD 119.99 / EURO 119.99 / GBP 109.99. With 1969 LEGO elements the 21309 NASA Apollo Saturn V rockets its way into LEGO Ideas history as the tallest LEGO Ideas set, as well as the one containing most elements.
-
Oh neat! Can't wait to build this one with my daughter after we finish the Knex ISS kit.
-
I just wanted to share my excitement about this new Apollo Lego set being released on June 1st. I'm really looking forward to building this with my kids. I'll just have to keep it away from my 4 year old otherwise it may not make it off the launch pad. ;)

-
Really looking forward to this. It looks like the design has been changed from what was originally put forwards, though it still looks excellent.
-
Any idea on the price?
-
Yea, they said the cut out some of the internal detail but very excited that it is still fully modular through each mission phase. The mini-mini figures to scale are a nice touch too!
-
Woo - what other realistic space-related Lego sets have there been, and might still be out there?
-
Any idea on the price?
$120, believe it or not.
-
Woo - what other realistic space-related Lego sets have there been, and might still be out there?
The JAXA Hayabusa space-probe, the NASA Curiosity rover and a "Women of NASA" set. The first two are sold out, the latter is coming in late 2018.
-
The Saturn V kit is now clocking in officially at 1,969 pieces. Nice little detail ;D
-
See also this link
http://www.brickjournal.com/view/article/505/
Piece count... wait for it... 1969 ... As someone said on FB, they should have released it July 20 :)
Almost certainly has some new molds in it, the conical fairing adapters aren't just done with cone pieces, the LM fits inside if the BrickJournal article is to be believed.
-
I have a real need to see this at my place.
Is there a place to pre-order? Will it be available online?
-
I need to preorder as well! Any info appreciated.
-
Any idea on the price?
http://www.businessinsider.com/nasa-apollo-moon-rocket-legos-2017-4
"But Lego's version won't cost billions upon billions of dollars, gobble up nearly 4.5% of the national budget, or need to be fueled with hundreds of thousands of gallons of highly flammable kerosene and liquid oxygen. Instead, each set of plastic parts will be scaled down 110 times, stand an impressive one-meter (3.28 feet) tall when fully assembled, and sell for $119."
-
$119!!?? I built a paper model for the price of the paper and ink used for it!
-
Lots of coverage on 'tech' sites of the release date. For example:

Hopefully that means it'll be a big success and LEGO will keep it in production for a decent period. I think they missed a trick though by not having pre-orders - need to capitalise on all the interest now.
For those of you trying to justify a purchase, how about this from geek.com:
Lego has priced this beauty of a model at $119.99. On average, Lego sets usually for around 10 cents a piece. The Saturn V, amazingly, comes in at roughly half that… so run out and grab one before all the other space geeks beat you to it!
-
Woo - what other realistic space-related Lego sets have there been, and might still be out there?
The JAXA Hayabusa space-probe, the NASA Curiosity rover and a "Women of NASA" set. The first two are sold out, the latter is coming in late 2018.
The Shuttle Adventure (not the Lego City one) was a great STS model, not perfectly in scale but pretty good considering the restrictions of Lego elements.
-
I think I'll order two of those and keep one for later. Large Lego have proven to be excellent investments!
-
$119 is not THAT much for Lego lego bricks imo, there are more expensive sets which are not as advanced as this one.
Also, here you can read a little bit more about the project:

Buying an extra and mothballing it for the future is fine and well, just don't be the person who buys five, and scalps them the following week. ;)

Price breaks down to 6¢ per part, which is a particularly excellent value. Average price per part for sets is 10.4¢ with the licensed themes being on the pricier side, and the in-house LEGO themes being on the cheaper side.
-
I will be setting my alarm for the middle of the night (if need be) to order mine as soon as this becomes available. Merry Christmas and Happy Birthday to me!
I'll be pounding the refresh key on LEGO.com just like I do on the update forum during SpaceX launches (sorry Chris)!

To cut to the chase:
I see no feasible improvements which could be made to the Saturn V and on that basis it receives my highest recommendation.

Another great review with even more photos:

Can't resist attaching some shots of the manual ...

I guess the interstage is not a separate assembly?

1969 pieces for 120 USD is a great price. Typical non licensed LEGO sets are running about 10 cents a piece these days (more for many licensed properties)
I'm just trying to decide how many copies to buy. At least 3 but... ?
-
The fan creators even want to do the crawler and service tower...

Just remember, Lar, that these models are meant to be built, and not meant to be investment objects. We should invest in young people getting an interest in space flight!

Hello LEGO Fans,
here is still a brief retrospect about the genesis of this great project of the two LEGO Freaks Felix Stiessen & Valérie Roche, (saabfan & whatsuptoday on the LEGO Ideas website), which Felix (Saabfan) described in this e-book. (https://www.raumfahrer.net/forum/smf/Smileys/yabb/cool.gif)
(http://imagizer.imageshack.us/v2/1024x768q90/922/3P00Gt.jpg) (http://whatsuptoday.free.fr/Saturn-V-Apollo-11/samples/magazine/index.html#page/4)
BTW, it is interesting to find in his approach that he first designed the Lunar Module as small as possible with the Lego Digital Designer (LDD), and then has built the rocket simply around it. (http://www.britmodeller.com/forums/public/style_emoticons/default/speak_cool.gif)
Although the two LEGO fans have apparently never met personally, it must have been an awesome long-distance cooperation, which has finally led this project to success.
And as one can see, much more details were planned, especially to the interior of the rocket (fuel tanks etc.), which unfortunately have not been realized by the LEGO designers Michael Psiaki & Carl Thomas Mirriam. (https://www.raumfahrer.net/forum/smf/Smileys/yabb/huh.gif)
Source: shop.lego.com
In addition, the LUT & Mobile Launcher (2902 parts) and Crawler (1373 parts) had also been designed already, which could possibly still come, if the Saturn V might successfully conquer the market ... (http://www.mind-craft.de/sml/top.gif)

Although the kit is recommended for children from 14+, I think that my grandson Max (12) could also master this imposing model with the help of the great construction manual (182 pages),

Officially this kit isn't out until Thursday, but I heard on Friday that John Lewis (UK department store chain) had it available for online order, with collection in local store branches. Sure enough it showed up as available for £109.99 (the UK RRP) with next-day collection from the JL in town. Ordered it, picked it up Saturday afternoon, and spent about 6 hours that evening and yesterday building it.
I've chronicled my build here, with photos:
http://major-clanger.dreamwidth.org/693539.html
It's an amazing kit. Within the limits of what you can achieve with Lego, it's remarkably accurate. It's also very impressive - not only is it huge (about 1:110 scale) but it's very solid. I like the option of displaying it horizontally, either in one piece or split into stages.
It looks like John Lewis sold out of them in the UK in about two days. The online Lego store should have it later this week, but I'd move quickly if you want one - this is clearly a very popular kit!
-
Wow, many thanks for sharing. It really is a quality model. I particularly loved the side-by-side photo with the 1:144 Airfix model, which I made a long time ago (over 30 years, yikes!).
Really hope Lego keep this model in production longer than some of the Ideas models. Surely they have their eye on the various 50th anniversaries?
-
Bought in Antwerp for 129€, selling from today May 31 at the LEGO shop in Wijnegem Shopping.
-
Appears to have sold out on the Lego UK store? :o

You do LEGO your way, I'll do it mine... People like me buying some to save and some to build drive demand so LEGO produces more initially. And I build lots of stuff. :)
-
Since the crawler and LUT are not available yet, does anyone have the parts list and assembly instructions published?
-
Will be going to the Lego store in Murray tomorrow (the big mall on State Street). Knock on wood hope its in stock!!
-
The US store shows it as in-stock, but their servers are getting creamed...

Indeed, I might have to give up and try again in the morning.
Edit: Got as far as the shipping address but couldn't get any further. Got to get some sleep now or I will be very unproductive at work tomorrow :(.
-
I just finished the payment process, Christmas in summer :)
Note that for France deliveries, a 30 days shipment delay is applied.
-
Darn, intended to order this right when I woke up; it's already out of stock :( Think I'm gonna risk a trip to my local Lego store to see if they still have it after school.
-
Just been to get mine from the local Lego store, there were people queueing waiting for it to open (myself included). It didn't look like they had to many in stock, so I'm glad I went early.
I finished my degree yesterday, so building it this afternoon will be a perfect way to celebrate! We're planning on recording a time-lapse of the build, I'll post it if it turns out any good.

I must humbly admit that I actually bought an extra set myself, so it turns out that I am in no position to pontificate...
For those very desperate I can say that the Antwerp shop seemed to have lots of sets and there wasn't any queuing yesterday evening. You can call and ask about their stock but they don't put sets aside and they don't take reservations.

LEGO launches NASA Apollo Saturn V set (time lapse build video)
http://www.collectspace.com/news/news-060117a-lego-nasa-apollo-saturn-v.html
The countdown is finally over — LEGO fans can now build their own towering model of NASA's Apollo Saturn V rocket, thanks to the launch of a new toy set on Thursday (June 1).
...collectSPACE, in collaboration with Ars Technica and Space.com, put the LEGO NASA Saturn V model to test, assembling the set in front of a full-scale mockup of the moon rocket's upper stage at Space Center Houston, the official visitor center for NASA's Johnson Space Center in Texas.

Was able to complete a backorder payment online. No Lego stores locally so guess I'll be waiting for mine to arrive for a while...

Hello everybody,
yep, with the Saturn 5 LEGO has obviously hit the bull's eye. (http://www.marcopoloworld.de/MarcoPoloWorld-Board/wbb2/images/grauweiss/smilies/eek.gif)
I have already ordered it yesterday, should come in the next days. (http://www.raumfahrer.net/forum/yabbfiles/Attachments/up040577.gif)
And this is Felix Stiessen, one of the two fan designers of the LEGO NASA Apollo Saturn V, at the signing event at the LEGO Store in Shopping City Süd located in Vienna, Austria.

Went to the Lego store after my first work shift, it was already sold out!
-
I'm very tempted to get one... and then a couple more, so I can build/mod all the proposed Saturn V derivatives next to each other in a glorious display. ;D
-
I ordered one on the Lego website, but it's already out of stock. I suppose I'll have to wait a few weeks.

Great photos! And FYI, your Airfix model is painted like the movie Apollo 13's Saturn V was! Screen accurate!

At least a Skylab!
-
Mine is on back-order, should be here on the 16th Jun. I'm just fine with that.
-
Got mine yesterday by walking into the local LEGO store and buying one... It is tempting to build it now, but I have to wait until after my last exam for the year on Monday :D
They had one built in the store and it was so smooth. Very neat.
-
The fantastic (and large, 33MB) instruction manual is now on-line:
https://lc-www-live-s.legocdn.com/bigdownloads/buildinginstructions/6207578.pdf (https://lc-www-live-s.legocdn.com/bigdownloads/buildinginstructions/6207578.pdf)
A nice bit of Apollo and Saturn V info included too.
-
Ordered mine today morning and it said it will deliver July 5th. But I get it as a present for my self anyway a bit later, so not a big deal. I would have to watch the unopened box the entire time otherwise.
The building instruction manual looks fantastic! I hope some internet community comes up with a launch mount and tower set. I doubt LEGO will sell it, but I want to showcase it vertically on the desk in my office.
-
Nice to get confirmation from the instructions that the lunar lander fits inside the fairing.
-
Lar, I have a question for you (or anybody who knows). Suppose I want to build the service tower for the Saturn V. How would I do that? If someone came up with a design[1], is there a way to buy the required LEGO pieces? I have not seen such a service on the LEGO home page.
[1]: I understand the developers of the Saturn V have already done that. But LEGO doesnt sell the sets..
-
My set was on backorder but just shipped today :).

Actually there is on the LEGO home page! Replacement parts under the Customer Services heading at the bottom of the page. At least it's on the UK LEGO website and once on the 'buy parts' page Germany is one of the countries listed where the service is provided.
One issue though is that you need the part design numbers. For sold sets they're listed in the instructions.

Thank you, I didnt look into the customer service section. But once I started browsing around.. its.. fantastically expensive! Woooow! A simple 2x12 beam .. 0.5 Euros! I didnt found any of the holed latice bricks, but I cant imagine that they are much cheaper. That would put the service tower and launch mount in the order of 1000 Euros. Thats completely out of the question. I guess this shop makes sense for replacing individual bricks that got lost, as it is probably intended. Not to buy bricks by the kilos for some demanding build like the service tower.

Another alternative is the aftermarket. Assuming you know what parts you need, (the set designers have done a tower and a crawler) you can go to bricklink.com ... there are 3000+ sellers there. Bricklink will let you upload a wantlist and help you determine which seller(s) are best suited to fill your needs. But you have to have an idea of the parts wanted.
I don't know that the set designers have released their design in the form of LDD or LDraw files... I haven't been following that closely. Hope that helps.
I have two on backorder (so far).
-
Assuming the designers release their design, then it will probably very hard to get the required elements from the market, many people will want to have it. Well, let's see :)
-
I couldn't resist, and bought the set. First Lego purchase for myself. Last build for me was the Super Car ( http://www.technicopedia.com/8880.html ) in 1996...

With my 5-y.o. kid we are progressing very well. I hand over the pieces and she looks through the manual and puts them together. She loves it!
First stage internals we finished the day we got the set, which is full of really ingenious solutions. It is a SNOT build ("studs not on top"), and when you go through it you just keep marvelling at the way it is designed...
-
In LEGO land, the coolest kids build with SNOT. (I remember when that term was invented)
-
Got my Saturn V set today at Barnes and Noble. YAY!
-
I got through building the S-IC tonight. I was very impressed with the studs not on top technique but I was also very pleasantly surprised by the visual cues they made with the different colored interior blocks (blue, green, etc) that made it easier to correlate the instructions to the model.
-
Yes and yes, it is really an ingenious construction. so many places where you just go "ahh, that's clever..." - Like the way the corrugated "belly band" is attached. It explained a rather baffling interior design.

Progress on my LEGO Saturn V

Hello guys,
very interesting to see that you are fully busy and excited. (http://www.mind-craft.de/sml/top.gif)
Today finally came the birthday gift for my grandson Max, which I bought on May 31st, who will surely be in for a surprise. (http://www.britmodeller.com/forums/public/style_emoticons/default/yahoo.gif)

This is the result of finishing 3 bags of the Saturn V. I have 9 bags to go. I had attached the assemblies with the USA lettering and engine pods to the framework wrongly and had to practically start over. It was a challenge getting the first stage assembled to the point where it was strong enough not to fall apart, but I did it.
-
This is what you get after finishing the fifth and sixth bags of the set:

This is what you get after finishing 8 bags:

Additional pics from S-II construction. I had to redo part of the stage after the first pic was taken as I had inserted something the wrong way.

You certainly must have done something wrong if it "was a challenge getting the first stage assembled to the point where it was strong enough not to fall apart". The whole construction is very solid and gives an almost monolithic feel to the rocket. - Good to see you got back on track.

Hah. I saw that firsthand: went into my local Lego Store last week on a weekday morning and asked about it. The guy said that they had just gotten a shipment of 30 of them. While I was standing there less than five minutes, they sold six. On a weekday morning.

I ordered two....only got one and a refund :(

yep, back ordered it at the beginning of the month. Got all my payment and shipping notices....opened the box and only one was in there. Since there was no other tracking number and the order said closed, I contacted Lego and they basically replied "sorry about that....we are out of them now and dont know if we will ever get any in". The funny thing was they had no idea I had only gotten one. You would think the guy packing them would know how to count.

Did anyone else think this peculiar? The S-IVB stage has what appears to be three instrument units stacked on top of it instead of just one. To preserve the correct overall height the SLA angle had to be greater to compensate. The only reason I could think of for doing this was so that the lunar module would fit on top of the S-IVB if desired. It really doesn't spoil the overall effect; I just thought it an interesting compromise.

The Instrument Unit is the black line, if I am correct

Couldn't it be because they always endeavour to use blocks that are already in production? Maybe those SLA blocks are from a previous set.

This is correct. I have circled the IU in the attached photo. The SLA wasn't entirely conical, it had a barrel section on the bottom to which the hinged SLA panels was attached to.
-

"Elements" is the preferred term, quote corrected to reflect that.
It's a bit more complicated than that, but essentially, yes. Any given set has to be cautious about how many new elements it uses, and how many new colors. LEGO Ideas sets typically operate under very tight restrictions[1] and usually have no new elements at all. This has been changing as Ideas sets become more popular. But they still don't have the freedom to introduce new elements, printing or colors that a mainline theme does (Friends, for example has a plethora of new elements, and existing elements in new colors, each year).
The other side of that coin is that once a mainline theme set introduces a new element, there is considerable pressure to use that new element in other sets introduced at similar times so as to amortize the new tooling across more sets[1].
1 - we fans have observed, LEGO employees more or less neither confirm or deny, but wink at us to let us know we're right...

I know this is old news (posted on May 2017), but at least I didnt know it and its not mentioned in this thread so far:
Hi Lego friends,
We’re glad you like our design, nice review about our rocket :-)
The Mobile launch tower & the Crawler at the 1/110 scale will be on line at Lego Ideas on September 2017, you can get an overview of prototypes here: http://whatsuptoday.free.fr/Saturn-V-Apollo-11/samples/magazine/index.html#page/18

Finally had a chance to work on ours and finish it yesterday. Even though it he has "outgrown" Lego, he still had fun building with me, and was very quick!!
-
Lovely pic Ronpur!
I just finished the S-II stage with my daughter. We've been at it since June 1st, but she's only 5 so I think that's OK... - We can't believe there are only two bags left!
Due to our LEGO build I bought this amazing book on the Saturn V: https://haynes.com/en-gb/nasa-saturn-v-owners-workshop-manual
- It is very well-written, concise, yet goes into great detail, and in a language everybody can understand. I am learning so many interesting facts about the Saturn V that I didn't know:
The kerosene used in the S-IC was called RP-1. And what does that abbreviation stand for? - surely something very technical? - Nope, it means.... wait for it...drumroll... "Rocket Propellant 1"! - So funny.
Also didn't know the explanation behind the particular look of the S-IC plume, i.e. the first metre or so of flame being very dark and laminar-looking almost. Well, turns out they directed the exhaust of the turbopump out through the inside of the lower half of the F-1 nozzle to protect it from the searing heat of the primary combustion.
And then the retro-rockets in the S-IC fins: they actually didn't bother to make an opening in the skin of the rocket for the rockets. They just blew a hole through the skin when they fired!
OK, better stop now. Truly great book, wonderfully illustrated.

I was looking over the rules to check how long they have to get each level of support, and I noticed something concerning (that was recently added). It explicitly calls out the Apollo program as a disallowed idea, effectively because they will handle it themselves if they want to expand the series.
Hopefully this counts as an exception, either if it was technically submitted a couple months ago, or if they are nice enough to recognize that this had been planned as a follow on project years ago. Also hopefully, the Saturn V will be back in stock at some point somewhere, I really don't want to buy it off a scalper.
https://ideas.lego.com/guidelines
Don’t base your project on a licensed property we currently sell, or a property that entered our portfolio through a previous LEGO Ideas set.
We know you love our licensed product lines. A licensed product is a LEGO product that is based on recognizable features of another company’s products or ideas. For example, LEGO Star Wars and LEGO Minecraft are licensed products. Since we actively develop new products based on our licenses, we’ve found that we can’t accept your submissions for these lines through LEGO Ideas.
LEGO Ideas does not accept projects based on:
Currently active or announced licenses such as Star Wars™, MARVEL Super Heroes™, The LEGO Batman Movie, Ferrari, Mercedes-Benz, and others. For a list of active licenses, please refer to this article in the LEGO Ideas Knowledge Base.
Any third-party license that entered our portfolio through LEGO Ideas such as Minecraft, Doctor Who, Adventure Time, the Apollo program, and others.
If a licensed property no longer appears on our list, and it didn’t enter the LEGO portfolio via LEGO Ideas, you’re welcome to submit projects based on it then. Whenever we release a new license, or re-release a set from a past licensed property, we’ll archive any related LEGO Ideas projects to follow this guideline.
For projects related to NASA, we consider the property to be the specific program or mission. For example, we will no longer consider projects related to the Mars Science Laboratory Curiosity Rover, or the Apollo program as potential LEGO Ideas sets.
Editor’s Note: This Guideline was added April 05, 2017 and affects projects submitted after this date. Existing projects based on current LEGO licenses have a smaller chance of passing the LEGO Review than other projects and may have increased risk of overlapping a product currently in development.
If the LEGO Group releases follow-up products based on the same original concept or licensed property, we produce them ourselves.
If we produce your project, it is possible the LEGO Group could consider your set as a starting point for a new playtheme, or release additional sets based on the same license. Any follow-up products based on the same concept or licensed property will be developed internally at the LEGO Group and independent from LEGO Ideas. We do not credit or compensate LEGO Ideas members for follow-up products. Read more in Prizes and Rewards.

Also hopefully, the Saturn V will be back in stock at some point somewhere, I really don't want to buy it off a scalper.

Only thing I would want to change in then tower set would be to have a LEGO-studded platform instead of the smooth surface. It's LEGO after all, it should look like it.
-
I changed the way I display my Saturn V this weekend to make it look more like the KSC Saturn V Center exhibit:
-
The 5 year old and me had a great time putting it together. He was squeeling from delight when he saw the packaging after his last school day.
We both now can't wait to see the real thing in KSC some day.

In two days they got 612 supporters out of the 10,000 needed for LEGO to review the launch tower set!
I must say that I would much have preferred a set that included both the crawler (i.e. "stage 0") and the launch tower.
-
Finished mine tonight - first perfectly on top of the DVD shelf :)

Changed my Saturn display again. It's vertical next to the LEGO City Shuttle I finished last year.

They are still sold out. :(
If it helps anyone in or willing to travel to California, when we were at LEGOLAND in Carlsbad over the 4th of July holiday, they still had some in stock at the Big Store.
My 4 year old is slow-rolling me with this and getting too distracted with other sets to keep working on our Saturn V. Eventually we'll move beyond bag 5...
-
Just drove to my nearest LEGO store(Hamburg) and they said they are hoping to have it in stock again in about two months. Settled for one of the slightly overpriced ones on Ebay :/.

The umbilical tower design has passed 5000 supporters now within about 2.5 weeks of when it started.

Wait! So, rockets really are Legos?
No.[1][2]
However it IS possible to build a model rocket out of LEGO elements. Or even buy a LEGO set that gives you a model after you build it to their design.. (or something else if you use the parts for something else, obvs...)
1 - No such thing as "legos", LOL [3]

I unfortunately knocked mine off it's stand and snapped one of the fins. While ordering a replacement, I took the liberty to be uber space geeky and ordered transparent blue studs to go on the J-2 engines. The space flight fanatic in me found it annoying that they had orange studs, LH2 and LOX burns light blue LEGO dammit!
-
Ah, good thinking! Together with the beige stud connecting the engine bell to the Service Module, those would be the two questionable choices in this set.
-
The umbilical tower design has passed 5000 supporters now within about 2.5 weeks of when it started.
Just 2 weeks later & it's now passed 7,500 :)
-
I support the tower as well, but I really think it should include the crawler too. That would be the full package. With a bit more judicious use of pieces they should be able to have both in the same set.
-
In addition, the LUT & Mobile Launcher (2902 parts) and Crawler (1373 parts) had also been designed already, which could possibly still come, if the Saturn V might successfully conquer the market ... (http://www.mind-craft.de/sml/top.gif)

I'm supporting it. I just hope that if they end up making the tower it will be in a set which integrates both crawler and tower. Would make for a much more interesting set. The tower in itself is a bit repetitive and boring in its structure.

Not sure if this should be in a new thread or not, but I just wanted to mention the Shuttle project on Lego Ideas. It's made to the same scale as Saturn V, 1:110, and, as far as I can judge, it's a pretty precise model. It's almost through the gates to 10,000 supporters, but still need some votes. If it hits 10k before 'early september', it'll go into the review process directly. I really want it on the shelf beside the Saturn V!

This shuttle isn't that much bigger than the big shuttle LEGO themselves did. That might be a downcheck. LEGO may view the market as saturated.... Supported it anyway.. but makes me think that a bit of judicious MOC work could get things scaled right. See this picture in particular
size comparision (image #7) from Ideas site (https://dp1eoqdp1qht7.cloudfront.net/community/projects/50a/447/4655406-07_Shuttle_NewComps_7-16-OU0Lm-ep_S3c8A-thumbnail-full.jpg)
Note: If this sparks a lot of discussion I'll probably carve out the posts to another thread.
-
The Space Shuttle has now reached 10,000 supporters :)
Saturn V launch tower is now on 9,395 with about 2 years left to get the remaining 605!
-
I'd buy the shuttle in an instant if it gets selected by LEGO (for which I guess the chances are really low). Its a beautiful set, much better-looking than LEGO's own version from a few years ago.
But I wouldn't buy the tower - I like my Saturn V displayed the way it is at JSC, on the side. :) I guess the chances of the tower being selected by LEGO are even lower than for the shuttle, as it is not a "stand-alone set" as their requirements state (edit: sorry to be so negative, but I guess its better to manage your expectations on this one).

I'm afraid I agree. I can't really imagine people buying the tower who haven't already bought the Saturn V and I suspect a lot of Saturn V buyers won't really be interested in the tower and thus too small a potential customer base. Still at least it should get the 10,000 votes and then at least LEGO gave to consider it.
have to consider it.

The Launch Umbilical Tower and the Shuttle both passed 10,000 supporters and are among the projects that qualify for a review.
But that' not all... - Also the NASA NF-15B research aircraft qualified. That's 3 out 6 LEGO projects being based on NASA hardware. Impressive! - There must be a lot of space fans out there...

Cool set. I have seen news about it. Look forward new ideas.

Finally managed to place an order, hopefuly it will be here by friday.

I’m currently working on mine. Started with the LM (bag 12), because if this site has tought me anything it’s payloads before rockets. ;)
One thing that’s struck me while building this set is that while it only has one instruction book, it could be built by three or four people following the PDF instructions.
-
While we’re drifting off toward other LEGO sets, I never thought I’d see a set with Dark Knight SRBs. :P
-
The S-IC suffered a RUD and currently being reassambled, but S-II is on schedule. ;D
Edit: reduced size of pics

Has anybody made a modified INT version with booster rockets? I haven't seen anything like that yet.

LEGO ideas second 2017 review results are in and it's not good news.

Kinda could see it coming for the LUT because it's something that will only be bought by some of the people who already have the Saturn V, but was really hoping for the Space Shuttle.
I hope the space shuttle falls under "New (and confidential) products currently being developed internally", but it could also be "Production capacity", "Build quality" or "Feasibility". The other of the listed possible reasons seem unlikely given that the Saturn V also made it and is very similar in regards to most of the other points.
-
Shuttle has been done before, many times. So it was always going to have a tough time being selected. Except for AFOLs like me, there may not be a lot of differentiation. And the tower? Very niche. I hope Valerie decides to just sell plans. Many AFOLs have the needed parts but not necessarily the time to do one from scratch.

Plus 1:110 makes the ET look weird, at least without some expensive new dome molds.

OK, its going to be very difficult to scrape together all these red parts for the umbilical tower manually on ebay or somewhere else. I am sad about that, really.
-
I think we should be happy that we still got the awesome Saturn V. Together with the (meh) "Women of NASA" and the earlier Mars Curiosity rover it is a pretty good result for space sets from a company not exclusively dedicated to space.
-
I would have bought the Shuttle, LUT, and/or F-15NB if they had been selected. I am bummed. LEGO’s missing a big opportunity here. If a space enthusiast could by LEGO out.....until then is there any software that you can design a Shuttle LEGO set and print out a list of blocks/elements for it?

Bricklink is your friend. If you have the LDD for the design or the inventory in some other form you can generate a want list and see which combination of resellers can fulfil your needs.

Hey everyone,
here's a stunning Time-lapse Video of a LEGO freak who has set to work ... (http://www.sherv.net/cm/emoticons/shocked/cant-believe-my-eyes-smiley-emoticon.gif)
but beware friends: Addictiveness !!! (http://www.marcopoloworld.de/MarcoPoloWorld-Board/wbb2/images/grauweiss/smilies/eek.gif)

One needs only approx. 4.600 bricks, and in the answers one finds estimates for the price (Robert Feiner), which amounts to approx. 1.300 EUR. (http://www.mind-craft.de/sml/erschrocken3.gif)
BTW, the ingenious designer of this LEGO-LUT is Bailey Fullarton (https://www.facebook.com/bailey.fullarton?fref=gs&dti=260290164376242&hc_location=group), who should not remain unmentioned. And here is a suitable photo from a contribution by Simon Wiens (https://www.facebook.com/groups/saturnvmods/permalink/341889449549646/), who has also built this awesome display.

Looks great. But shouldn't it all be standing on top of a CRAWLER?.. :-)

This Mobile Launcher is only a simple display, and the Crawler is another LEGO vehicle. (http://www.britmodeller.com/forums/public/style_emoticons/default/speak_cool.gif)
One can build it with LEGO TECHNIC, as a freak from Australia (OzShan) has shown, whose crawler can even drive. (http://www.mind-craft.de/sml/top.gif)
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KRk7t8TvVvI&feature=youtu.be (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KRk7t8TvVvI&feature=youtu.be)
And like the original, it even has a height-adjustable JEL System. (http://www.marcopoloworld.de/MarcoPoloWorld-Board/wbb2/images/grauweiss/smilies/eek.gif)

And here at Eurobricks (http://www.eurobricks.com/forum/index.php?/forums/topic/108590-wip-150-nasa-crawler-transporter/) the master of all LEGO classes introduces his awesome crawler project,

and his crawler even has an amazing interior.(http://www.raumfahrer.net/forum/yabbfiles/Attachments/up040577.gif)

I spot a LEGO Saturn V in the control room at Boca Chica.... :-)
If the SpaceX engineers can do that one I guess Starship shouldn't be too much of a challenge...

The challenge is not technical, it's political. There are those who speculate that LEGO is afraid of offending (someone at) NASA.
Facts: They have a current SLS derived official set and have shot down SpaceX related IDEAS submissions multiple times already.
SO, any such model, if it were constructed, would have to be by someone comfortable doing MOCs ,There are far fewer of us than there are people comfortable assembling sets from instructions.

Yes. And me; I'm dying to have a big Falcon Heavy set the same sort of quality as the Saturn V one.

Or SpaceX is not interested in licensing the design to LEGO. This is the more likely explanation, as it also covers other manufacturers (see the lack of scale models of the SpaceX rockets, for example).

There is no need for speculation or conspiracy theories. LEGO is not a company dedicated to modelling just about all space launch systems. LEGO has done a few iconic launch vehicles such as the Shuttle, Saturn V and the LM. In general, all their models depicting real-life hardware are of iconic vehicles or buildings. Neither Falcon Heavy nor SLS are yet iconic.
