Send your name to an asteroid
« on: 04/01/2013 11:17 am »
The following is not an April Fools Joke...

Jaxa, the Japanese Space Agency will be sending another spacecraft to an asteroid next year. Its called Hayabusa 2.

As is usual with many of these missions Jaxa is giving an opportunity to have your name and a message of your choosing sent into space. This is great for kids and older kids like us :)

But if that was not enough, your name and message will go on a target marker which will be left on the asteroid.

So sign up today.

Now the page isn't quite yet ready to load names and messages, but this will occur on April 10 for a limited period of time.

Awesomeness!

JPL did something similar 10 years ago with the Deep Impact probe, but you could only put your name on it and not a message. Thanks for the heads up  ;)

Very cool opportunity. Will be putting my name and a short message on it. Also, opportunity to submit closes at noon on April 16 (JST).

That's for JAXA's new rocket, not for the asteroid mission.  ;)

3 days to go and we should be able to submit our asteroid messages in English. If you speak Japanese you can submit now.
