Discussion thread for launch of GSAT-20.

Launch on Falcon 9 from Florida in Q2 2024.

GSAT-20, a 3.5 ton satellite, will be launched by GSLV Mk III D2. GSAT-20 will also have electric propulsion system.

"Another satellite Gsat-20, which is five times more powerful than the one that will be launched from French Guiana, is based on a new technology that reduces its weight to just 3.5 tonnes. This satellite will be launched by our 'Baahubali' GSLV Mk III," Misra said.

Is it because .... on our GSLV ?
It will be a four-tonne-class HTS and will be launched towards the second half of 2019 on our GSLV MarkIII vehicle.

BENGALURU:  Come 2019, Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) will launch GSAT-20 — its second five-tonne class satellite after GSAT-11 — completing its network of high throughput communication satellites.

This along with GSAT-19, GSAT-29 and GSAT-11, all launched in 2018, is expected to boost communication capabilities of the country by providing high-speed internet of 100 Gbps or more to even rural areas in India. GSAT-20 will be among the 32 missions planned by ISRO in 2019 and will be the second heaviest satellite built by ISRO.

The satellite will complete a constellation of satellites which use special transponders to beam high frequency signals for better connectivity in the country. ISRO chairman K Sivan said on Friday that GSAT-20 is also expected to provide inflight internet connectivity also. “The launch of GSAT-20 will complete Government of India’s ‘Digital India’ programme. Along with the other GSATs (launched in 2018), it will meet the requirement of high-speed communication technologies of our country,” he said.

32 missions

GSAT-20, which is expected to be launched in September, will be among the 32 missions of ISRO in 2019. While 14 will be launch missions, 18 will be spacecraft missions. Of the 14 launch missions, eight will use PSLV, two using Geosynchronous Launch Vehicle, two GSLV Mk-III and two using Small Satellite Launch Vehicle. Among the important spacecraft missions planned is Chandrayaan-2, which will be launched during mid- April or later in June if ISRO misses the April window.

Sivan listed launches and projects lined up for 2019 apart from Gaganyaan. Among them are key tests of the Re-usable Launch Vehicle, a PSLV launch that will test a new technology on its fourth stage and GSAT-20, planned for October-September.

The quotes above show that NET is September, so the thread title needs to be updated.

"GSAT-20, which is expected to be launched in September, will be among the 32 missions of ISRO in 2019."

"...GSAT-20, planned for October-September."

From experience, "October-September" in this context means "NET October"  ;)

Given low GSLV Mk-3 launch frequency i think it is unlikely this will be launched on Mk-3 this year. There are already two Mk-3 launches planned this year. My bet is that this will be launched sometime in 2020 onboard Araine-5.

Chandrayaan-2 is the first and what is the second GSLV Mk-3 launch 2019?

Isro officials have hinted at special geostationary communication satellites for human spaceflight program. Having a network of geo-comsats would allow isro to have 24/7 contact for future manned LEO missions. There are supposedly two of these with the first planned to be launched by the end of this year.

The Geo-Mobile Satellite with S-Band is or was GSAT-21. Were the numbers changed or confused?
GSAT-20 is planned as a Ka-Band HTS satellite and was always scheduled for the GSLV-III D3 flight.

During IAC2019 in Washington DC I spoke with S Somanath (Director of VSSC) and R Umamaheswaran (Scientific Secretary)  from ISRO on Thursday 24th October.
...
The 50 min audio interview is available here https://astrotalkuk.org/?p=5703

- Next GSLV III launch still targeted for mid 2020.
<snip>

Will GSAT-20 be the next GSLV Mk III payload?  It is built on an I-3K bus--see immediately preceding thread post.  Gunter's web site lists its mass at 3650 kg.

Would the GSAT-20 launch vehicle be D3 or M2?  Or, would D3 be for the first 5000 to 6000 kg payload to GTO?

Next Mk-3 mission should be M2/GSAT-20 around june 2020. There is no D3 for Mk-3 because of the experimental suborbital flight in december 2014.

What about GSAT-20? Will it be launched this year? And if so, would it be with a GSLV-MKIII rocket?

I read somewhere GSAT-20 will be on a Ariane 5 this september since it is a 5 ton+ GEO sat beyond what current Mk3 can lift (presently ~4.25 ton to GTO)

Some "new news" would be appreciated.

The most recent news that we have in this thread puts this satellite on a GSLV MkIII.

However, that post was in 2019.

Related thought: could GSLV MkIII lift a ~5000kg satellite to a sub-GTO?  The orbit changes require more delta-V from the satellite's engine than a standard GTO because the perigee and apogee must both be raised and the inclination zeroed out.

GSAT-20 was originally supposed to be on Mk-3 D2 mission in November 2018 so it is already running years behind schedule. I would not be surprised to see it delayed to 2022 or even beyond given it is only the second ISRO satellite to use the new I4K-I6K bus (after GSAT-11) and has to deal with all the technical challenges that come with a new high power satellite bus.

Interesting. They might even sign a deal with the French in order to send GSAT-20 and GSAT-24. After all, Ariane is a proven workhorse.

A series of advanced satellites Gsat-20, Gsat-30 and Gsat-32 , which will boost communication capabilites of the country, will also be launched by early next year. While Gsat-20 and Gsat-30, a replacement of Insat-4A, will be sent to space from French Guiana, Gsat-32 will be launched from Sriharikota.

News that both GSAT-20 (and GSAT-24) were to be launched by Ariane 5.  A question had been previously raised--could the current model of GSLV MkIII lift the mass of GSAT-24 into some kind of geostationary transfer orbit (GTO)?  Article dated February 18, 2021:

GSAT-24 will be a 4.1 tonne communication satellite that will put into space 24 Ku-band transponders to be used for DTH services. “The satellite’s cost is Rs 400 crore and NSIL will be launching it through Arianespace. The launch is expected to happen sometime in September [2020],” Sivan said.
The PSU is also negotiating to acquire GSAT-20, a high-throughput satellite, which will also be launched commercially. “Aside from GSAT-20, DishTV has held preliminary talks with NSIL for another satellite,” Sivan added.
