Just dropping by to say that after the latest update, seeing the red “read/unread” and wider iPhone mobile screen, that reading NSF on iPhone in bed at night is the best it’s ever been (imho) thanks all for the work and improvements!

I like the updated look. :) However, recently (last couple of days I guess) for me the "threads with new posts" functionality isn't working. This is from the index page, where I used to click the "N" to see threads with new messages. Now that doesn't appear to be a link at all. My browser is Safari version 12.1.1. Thanks!

I'm seeing the same thing with Firefox 69.0.2 on Windows 10 1809.  I think it started sometime yesterday.
Just checking in, are there any updates on this issue? This is how I keep up with the various topics, and I'm suffering NSF withdrawal here.... Thanks!

This should be a mobile option, not on the Desktop mode. Not everyone enjoys a mobile version of the site on the desktop mode.

That is the mobile version, not desktop. Everything suggests you're on some less used set up, especially looking at your very different browser screenshots. Perhaps it's defaulting/being seen as a/mobile browser and that's where it all went wrong for you?

If it was a site issue, lots of people would be on here, for sure.

Works great on Windows 10/Firefox (whatever version I'm on, the latest obviously as it asks you to update occasionally and I always do). Same on my iphone, where that red bar appears to save space. You never see that, nor should you, on the desktop version on a desktop PC.

Yeah, full site theme is better on mobile than it was, but the "new" button is tiny and that's the place I actually want to go. If that could be made big enough to tap reliably, that'd send me home happy.

Probably the most used link on a index page (and 'unread' page) is the 'new' button.

So perhaps the 'new' button can be moved to a better place. Currently it's at the end of the thread title so the position is inconsistent from thread to thread.

Perhaps it can be moved to the right column ('last post' column) and if it were up to me, I'd make the entire td clickable to the 'new' post (or 'last' post when there is no 'new'). The last td already has a little icon that links to the last post, perhaps we can replace that with the 'new' icon, (or at least put both of them there, but if you have both you can't make the entire td clickable, which I would really prefer at least on mobile).

On another forum I use, the 'new' button has been removed, and clicking on the thread title will take you to the first unread post in the thread. I like that approach.

Looks good.  Thanks!

(I mostly use the category "Unread Posts" links, but there are certain boards that I like to handle individually before the category of which they are a part.)
This account is inactive as of the end of 2024.

Sounds good to me, except that it's not obvious, why keep the most used function hidden.

You DO see it if you use a narrow window. There’s no longer any option to zoom out. Everything is automatically scrunched down to your screen. It’s super annoying on my iPhone SE. incredibly frustrating, and reduces the site usability on my phone. I find myself visiting less.

If you have 3 columns, things are reduced to like one or two words per line. This is why automatic sizing is bad. There should be an option of not doing that.

Some text is also truncates on the right.

If I wanted a mobilized version, I would select mobile, but I should also be able to select a desktop view. But there’s now no way to do that as everything is reflowed automatically to the small screen.

I just noticed that the “new topic” option does not appear anywhere on my NSF pages. Also not seeing a way to send a PM to anyone. What should I do?

Using Safari browser on iMac.

If the screen width is below a certain point the user links disappear, but if you tap the users name you get to a page with a PM link, (so two taps instead of one, hopefully not to bad).

Edit: note to mods: considering that the content is loaded anyway, just hidden, it can be made into a flyout instead of a page load to make it much quicker.

It might not be possible within the board software, but it would be great if it was possible to have an optional more 'compact' layout of the forum main page, more like the old board. The humongous line spacing, font sizes, and spaces between sections are just wearing out my scroll wheel, I can only see 9-10 sections even on full screen. That's with running a perfectly reasonable 1920x1080 on a 21.5" monitor.
Concur.

It's even worse when using 150% zoom as some of us with tired old eyes do.

And the banner ad at the top doesn't help (has to be scrolled past on every single page) but it must do wonders for the budget so consider this paragraph for info (in case it's not obvious) not a complaint.
If I use 125% zoom my entire monitor is filled and the ad bar along the right side is no longer visible.

IMHO, the automatic reformatting is a mistake...

Did I mention I also can’t get a list of user names?

I'm finding that the forum Search function intermittently flakes out.

Sometimes it finds nothing, even if I'm searching using a word or phrase that I've successfully used before.

Or, as just happened to me, it returns a list of posts, but when I attempt to load a successive page of the same, the search find drops to zero.

Once the Search function fails, it fails for a few minutes to hours (for me).

Successive attempts, minutes or hours later, then seem to work.
Follow-up post:
Forum Search function has failed every time I have tried to use it since my previous post of 8/17.

Further testing Search with common forum "space words," while I drafted this message.
It worked once, then immediately failed loading "page 2."
Further follow-up:
I since discovered that if I click on "Revise Search" one or more times, without changing the search word or phrase, then eventually, the search will return data.  (I first discovered this in a moment of frustration-clicking.)

This does not guarantee a smooth load of page 2, etc. of search returns.

Same here (intermittent results) but your note on the "Revise Search" helps!
