So just an "img" "/img" tag and a "copy link" from the original picture?

Ta.

No, you really shouldn't do that. The reason is it often breaks the thread cause many people have different width settings on their devices.

I have lost track of the number of times I have had to correct the member's post to rectify the issue and attach the photo. Many of these members are mobile users, and it is pretty challenging for them to perform attachment actions. Therefore, when I spot them, I cut and paste the picture as an image, attach it, and subsequently delete the embedded version.

So is life as a moderator.

Yeah, if it's absolutely required, make sure it's a small image at the very least, but embedding results often in them eventually dying from the source link and breaking the post anyway. For something the member is asking, maybe several posts in the thread with attached images per break?

The problem with attachments is that it (as the original questioner noted) breaks a lot of the other functionality. Can't embed in quotes, for eg. Can't embed with a link to the source. Can't structure images inline with the text to enable step-wise descriptions/discussion ["first we do this (img), then we do this (img)..." Which, if you didn't grow up reading scientific papers, is much more natural.] And it's clumsier on most devices, especially with other sites often actively preventing viewing images outside of their preferred viewer/"lightbox", even when those images are not there own (reddit, for eg.)

I'm curious if the long fantasised forum software swap-out fixes any of those issues?

So to summarize:
1. download image to device
2. reattach

Is the correct way to do it?

Thats what I have been doing...

Are you reattaching the image via this option in the edit window?

I originally used the download/post/attach (using the option in the immediately preceding post).

Then you end up with 2 copies of the same file, doubling the space usage (unless you use storage compression to de-dup the image blocks on disk).

The link is what I do on other forums, so when you quote it, the reference comes "along for the ride".

Any other suggestions, given that there are problems with bot of these.....?

For the next release, could you consider this for posting BlueSky on NSF?

https://forum.nasaspaceflight.com/index.php?topic=62342.msg2696851#msg2696851

I provide a ton of news posts from "X" and recently started having more from BlueSky, would appreciate the ability to have it expand the text once the link is provided.

Tony

Pinging on this, given the plausible/probable exit of the "X" app from the major online stores, apart from or in addition to associated geographical bans, due to the production and dissemination of pedopornographic and non-consensual sexual content on demand. Which should also be reason enough to think (yet again, for still new hefty reasons) on the appropriateness of utilizing said site at all.

X is by a factor of X the most popular social medium and is going nowhere. What you should ask for is for the ADDITION of that embed rather than letting yourself down by referencing issues with AI, which is not limited to X, and is specific to Grok, which is not embedded here.

This link is restricted, but I suggested using the Bluesky Auto Embed v1.1 mod for Simple Machines forum software a while back before my post got deleted.

EDIT: There's also a Facebook embed mod.

Yeah, I got the same error when trying to check Catdlr's quoted link. Could you expand on the autoembed mod? Is it something the forum admins have to implement or can users do something to make it work on their end?

Gee, guys, that was such an old request; many of the space-related journalists who abandoned "X" after the political events have returned to "X" again.  I haven't been on BlueSky for some time.

+1  the less we see from X, Twitter or Xitter the better. Seems posters here like information and as such a high signal to noise ratio is appreciated. X and others are none of that is seems.
Ps: And if you have to then it is very highly appreciated to quote the text content plus a link. Otherwise, on mobile, you see a link and I ignore it :)

Yes, and I'm right behind them and inserting that when they do.

Actually not a bad idea to have Blusky embeds work too. I'd also like Facebook embeds to work cause the NSF Facebook page is better than the X feed (and I do the X feed!)

So my call would be all of them to work and people can post what links they prefer, rather than removing any. There will always be more X posts as that is where the vast majority of posts are made of course.

Tech Crunch: The Wayback Machine debuts a new plug-in designed to fix the internet’s broken links problem [Feb 4]

Quote
The Archive’s Wayback Machine, which indexes the web through widespread snapshotting, has partnered with Automattic, the company behind WordPress. Together, the two organizations have launched a new WordPress plug-in — the Link Fixer — that is designed to combat the scourge of “link rot.”

[...]

Automattic says that its new plug-in works by scanning your WordPress posts for outbound links, then cross-referencing the Wayback Machine for archived versions of those links. If there are none, it will automatically take new snapshots of the articles in question. Should a linked web page go offline, the new feature will then redirect readers to the archived versions, so that there is no drop in service.

Might be useful for NSF to investigate, as old posts are filled with dead links.
