Sorry, that's just not true. It's not nit-pickey at all. Almost everything about the 5-seg SRB is different. The formulation of the solid fuel is completely different, the core shape is completely different, the burn characteristics are totally different, the TVC is completely different, the parachute and recovery systems are completely different. The one single commonality is the steel segment case and even that is being assessed to be replaced with new composite cases.
In short, the Ares-5-seg booster is totally alien to the STS 4-segment booster. By the time it flies (if it ever does), the only thing they will have in common is the name of the company that makes them. I wouldn't call that "Shuttle derived".
