Revell to reissue their Shuttle launch tower kit
« on: 11/12/2013 05:49 pm »
I was at the IPMS UK Nationals show this weekend. Revell had a list of new releases and reissues on their stand. On the list is their Space Shuttle with launch tower kit (kit nr. 4911). It'll be a limited edition, to be introduced March 2014.

Wow, that sounds sensational, will that be the old Revell kit No. 4911 or an update without the scale dilemma?

I imagine it will be a reissue of the original kit.  Maybe new decals.....ha ha.

I need two.  I want to take my damaged old kit and a new tower to build a Saturn V MLP.  My original kit was damaged during a move a while ago.  I had raised the tower and added to the bottom of the RSS to fit a bigger MLP I built.  All on a big base built of plywood and heavy card board.  I wish I had pictures of it.  I used it from 1988 until 2008 to show what shuttle was on the pad ready for launch.

Last year they did a reissue of their 'Schaufelradbagger' (open cast mine excavator), another huge kit, this was a straight reissue except for the conveyor belts, iirc. I expect this to be in the same vein, they're not going to make a new mould to produce a few thousand kits at most.

You seem to be right with your assumption.

On facebook of LVM Studios you will find this photo of the ScaleModelWorld 2013  last weekend with the Revell announcement of the release of their Shuttle Launch Tower 4911 in 2014 in a limited edition.

Maybe you've probably seen this announcement, right?

Have you also visited the stand of LVM Studios? They have produced the LC39-Detail Kits No. 1-4. One year ago they announced their Detail kit No. 5 LC39S5 - Exterior for the RSS - Q1 2013, but that still does not exist.

Have you seen this kit No. 5 at the LVM stand or spoken with the guys?

It seem that we have been waiting for kit #5 from Leon for ever. He did say tho, that he hired more staff to help with the backlog and for new products. Perhaps the announcement from Revell will kick start the production of kit #5, and maybe a new set? That would be really cool!

Yes, I talked to Leon (and gave him the photo you linked to). The release was news to him. He hasn't forgotten about detail set 5, but any further details you'll have to ask him.

I asked him several times after kit no. 5, but he has not replied. I think he will be quite congested.

But because Revell for the reissue will use the old Revell kit 4911 that could might rise again the demand for LVM detail kits, so that they possible still put out their detail kit No. 5 now too.

If yes, but still remains the question of when it will be well, and what is the cost then ...

I figured that I would have to, plus the bottom sloped section.  I realize I will have to cheat a bit, but I just want it to look good.....I am not as skilled as Manfred! LOL

That's the problem with the underscale. Couldn't widen it though. Here's a photo of one I built 20 odd years ago (re-worked it for the 40th anniversary in Photoshop).

Hmmm - depending on price could get a couple myself, either to do a Saturn 1B on the Milkstool or a new tower for the SLS.

This price point at 70-80 euros is about half of what I payed for the original antique. A realy good price for Europe, but I'd like to see the U.S. price somewhere.

I am worried about shipping.  It  is a big kit!

i paid about $40 shipping US->EU for an original kit earlier this year, so that'd be the worst case if no US retailer is going to stock them.

Hi folks,

I press all U.S. friends both thumbs that even U.S. retailers offer this Revell reissue of the legendary Launch tower, and if it should be true, the Limited Edition is said to comprise 2.500 kits.

In Germany also ANDROMEDA24.DE offers pre-orders at a discount.

It's for only € 69.95 (pre-order, after the release of € 74.95) really a super bargain!

And now adds one to the other, as I had already suspected. Now LVM Studios has recognized the opportunity and finally brings out the announced more than a year LC-39 Detailed kit No.4/5 . This is a variety pack, for however you must fork out proud € 224.95.

The separate Detail Kit No. 5 with RSS Exteriors costs at least still € 104.95, which one can see now, so a lot of details like cable trays, platforms, walkways, stairs and much more, as it says on the LVM site ...

So we'll see.

I have seen these two photos of kit #5, but no details yet. I would like to see the download instructions, just to get an idea of what we are in for. All of kit #5 is going to be exciting tho, we've waited so long.

Yep, unfortunately the downloadable manual on the LVM site is only of Kit No. 4.

Therefore we have to wait and Leon makes it more exciting.

My kit arrived in the mail today.  I got it at a slightly reduced price because the box was damaged.  Wow, I forgot how much was in this kit.  The decals for the shuttle are fantastic, just like the ones that came in the reissue of the Discovery and 747 last year.  Now to dig out my old one and figure out how to build my Saturn MLP!

RON,

I lucked out on my perchase of this great kit. I got the original antique at an estate sale, and it had two MLP's and two shuttle stacks, extra stairs and hand rails and a large amount of drawings from Ravell. All for $75.00!!!

Wow, just got a old tower complex from ebay for less than half of what I paid for the complete kit.  This will help my Saturn V project.  I can start the whole tower from scratch instead of tearing apart a broken model from 30 years ago.  And I can rebuild a shuttle complex if I want to!

Hi Rich,

you're a lucky man if you got the rare old Revell kit for this price, plus as an encore an MLP with stack and also stairs and hand rails. That was a direct hit.

What are the drawings, from the installation instructions from Revell or technical drawings from NASA?

Hello Ron,

that sounds very interesting, what you are planning there.

So you want to build from Revell Launch tower kit a LUT for the Saturn V, if I understood it correctly, right?

How strange, NASA is gone the opposite way at that time ...

I'm curious, when do you want to start with it?

Yep, that is the idea, working backwards from what NASA did!  I will need to scratch build the platform and lower three levels that are tapered out.  Plus all the swing arms.  (No lights! LOL)

Wow, thats a great challenge, have you drawings for scratch building? There you have to build a lot of stairs and other stuff ...

BTW, because of the lighting of the LUT you'd have to ask Rich, who knows how much the lamps had, but much more then the shuttle tower.

Therefore keep your hands off better ...

Because the shuttle launch tower is underscale (1/160 or thereabouts) you'll have to cheat a bit and add two extra levels to get it to the proper height compared to either an Airfix or Momogram Saturn V (I built one for the Apollo 11 25th anniversary).

KEITH,
Make sure that you look at Manfred's build. He has a lot of the variables worked out already, and what a build!

RON,
How can you see where you are going without the lights? LOL!

Manfred,
The drawings that I got with the kit are some from Revell, and some from NASA. All extra reference material is good.

Thanks, I've been following Manfred's build with interest for some time now. You can just about get away with the underscale when building the shuttle launch tower (the RSS won't entirely cover the shuttle), but with a tall Saturn V the lack of height is most noticeable. Short of scratchbuilding the tower (which would negate purchasing two kits anyway), the only way to arrive at the correct height is to add two levels (see below).

Yep, you actually mentioned that on page 1 of the thread!  I measured it out when I got the kits, and used the White Room level as my starting point going down.  But first, I want to build the platform, but other fun projects got in the way.

Thanks very much, but that was built before the internet, so limited research material. I'm sure you will be able to do a lot better  :)

In case it's of any use I used N-guage Kibri bridges to build the swing arms. Not technically accurate but they look OK.
